Hello, guys! 10 hours ago I left my iPhone 5 (iOS 8.3) on airplane mode. I just picked it up and it went from 26% to 16%. Is... this normal?!

Yes. It was still powered on right? Why would you not expect it to use power? It just consumes it at a lower rate than it would otherwise.

To fix problems like this, I run the phone until it turns off . Then let it charge to 100% without using it.. Rinse and repeat a couple of times.

I am guessing we need to retrain the battery periodically.

Maby that you have apps running in the background, and maby you have in the general settings "apps running on background" on.

Any process running in the background uses energy. It's possible that an app was doing something this go-round, or worse trying to access data while the phone was in airplane mode (and not reacting well when it couldn't).

If you;re not using your phone for a few hours and don't want it to use any energy at all, shut it off.

Agreed. The phone still uses power in airplane mode.

Usually not at the rate of something like 1% an hour (while it's asleep in airplane mode).

----------

Coincidentally just had an iPhone 5 (with an older worse battery) that I fully charged and left for overnight on airplane mode--just checked it about 12 hours later and it's still at 100%.

I knew it ! So I do have a problem. Did you have apps running in the background?

View the battery usage for the last 24 hours and see if there is an app that's trying to do things in the background but can't because of no network.

Though a friend has an iPhone 4s running iOS 8.3 and in aeroplane mode it drained more than just 1% an hour.

I left my iPhone 4 on airplane mode for 3 days. It drained only 3% (it already had 11 minutes of YouTube usage).

I also have an iPhone 5S (loaded with apps that use location services and notifications). During 8 hours of sleep time, the phone drains anywhere between 2 - 3%.

Maybe certain became corrupt with recent update. Like someone said, look at the battery usage percentage, and find out which is app is using most battery.

I have my iPhone 4 on airplane mode for as long as 12 days, without any further use.

However, I can only use it 2 hours in total, in normal use. I can only use it less than an hour if I use it heavily. Relatively not tolerable. Performance is also another issue.

I'm having similar battery issues.

I have a 5S (purchased at launch), that had been working perfectly normal up until recently.

I went to bed with battery level of 97%, put it on airplane mode, and awoke with a battery level of 60%. I tested it a few other times with similar results. In the past, I would lose max 2-3% over a 7-8 hour period on airplane mode.

I checked the battery usage in settings and nothing appeared to be out of the norm, but obviously losing 37% on airplane mode is abnormal. Is it a new app I downloaded? A new widget I'm using? I can't tell.

I'm thinking that I'll need to "restore as new" and see if that helps, but I hate to lose all of my imessages, app settings, game progress, etc.

100% seems to last longer than other percentages to me probably do to some kind of overcharging or buffer, so if you're comparing it to that it might be why.
