I decided to do a trade in on my 2011 iMac as I desperately needed a new one (yes I know silicone coming blah blah but I won't buy a first gen product like that and I need a new one yesterday). I was actually really happy with the trade in offer Apple gave me and I did the 0% financing through my Apple Care for 12 months.

I got to thinking about this iMac and maybe keeping it as a family computer for the kids to use as it does very basic stuff fine but really struggles on anything more than basic web browsing and email. I've also considered making it just a server as all of our media library sinks to it through Apple TV and I'd like to honestly have that off of my computer. If I decide to not send in my iMac what happens? Will I just be charged the original amount of the purchase price over the 12 months? I know I should have read it completely but I wasn't sure if I signed into a contract obligating me to send my iMac back. I still may send it back but was just curious on my options. Thanks!

Don't you sign up for the full price and then they knock the trade in price off the purchase price after the fact?

What they do if you pay with interest-free installments with the Apple Card is to apply the trade-in instantly when calculating the payments when you place the order and before you have sent in the old device. My guess is that if you decide to keep the old device, they will end up adjusting the monthly payments.

When I ordered my 2020 Macbook Pro I was going to trade in my 2017 Macbook Pro. I later changed my mind and I called Apple. They told me all I had to do was not send in the 2017 and they would simply charge it to my card which is what happened. I did not do payments so I am not sure how the payments would be affected. Call apple and ask them.

Ah ok, i guess it’s different in Europe.

What were they offering you for your 2011??? I have a loaded 27” 2011 and apple offered to recycle it for me. Lol. I dont know what I am going to do with it (it works fine, still).

Sell it on Craigslist or similar locally. You'll get a lot more money. Be sure to clean install and remove from iCloud. If using a HDD do at least a one pass wipe. To overwrite data.

You probably have a friend or family member who'd love to buy it. What with all the kids homeschooling now due to COVID-19. Perhaps sell it somewhere between CL prices and Apple's offer. Or just sell it at Apple's offer price. At least someone you know gets it. Instead of some reseller jacking the price up and selling it to someone else.
