    Remember when we talked about how remarkable it is that immigration has all of a sudden become such a big deal? Well...

    * Sigh. *

    Yeah, but it's not like the immigration debate is good for unifying the GOP like the terrorism issue. Moderate Republicans don't want to alienate the crossover voters that get them elected, and the extreme right doesn't want to alienate the base that gets them elected.

    Meanwhile there aren't many Democrats who simply want to build a wall, stick their fingers in their ears, and say LA LA LA LA LA LA LA when the immigrants come a-knockin'. They can all rally around something involving 'amnesty' while the GOP does the circular-firing-squad thing for once.

    I noticed this. Suddenly immigration has become a hot button issue. Unfortunately, like the Schiavo incident, this isn't exactly helping the neocons. Most people still don't want to talk about it, and some who are against it make it pretty clear it's a racial issue, drowning out the valid points of those who are more moderate. But then, like I said, and like abortion, capital punishment, euthanasia, and a lot of other tough issues, most of the time people just don't want to think about it or even talk about it. Even those who don't realize this is just a distraction don't care.

    Plus, with the Reps looking so bad right now on other things, there's kind of a backlash against anything they try to do like this. Look at what happened to the Govenator here in CA. Even the good props he supported where shot down because people just dislike him that much.
