Somewhere over the rainbow
I've been asked for help with a program called PPLive. My friend wants to use it to watch Chinese television on her Mac. The only question asked about it here previously went unanswered.

As far as I can tell, it's a program for watching streaming TV.

Is it legal?

Does anyone know of a Mac equivalent? As far as I can tell from the website, it's only for Windows.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PPLive

all your question are answered in the article expect legality which simply suggest it might be, but my guess it is probably illegal, but as long as the government in china doesn't care it won't matter. It not like the gov of china is going to crack down on someone in the states from pirating tv. everything is pirated there as it part of the culture. the chinese government monitors the internet closely and censors a lot, if it is up my guess is palms are being greased. There is an english description on the site if you click on the english link.

Thanks, that article answered my question. Legality IS mentioned:

It is believed that boardcasting of certain content through PPLive may be infringing the copyright of respective programme owners.

I wouldn't say that copyright infringement is so much a part of the culture in China, as it is a crime-related problem.

But thanks for the article, it was exactly what I needed :)

I mention the who legal rant because it said "may be" rather than "does".
