Looking for Desktop.. Is a Cube around that price range? Maybe a decently powered G4? Older 700 Mhz iMac?

hands down, eMac, as the prev. poster said. refurb, if your budget is really, really tight. (remember to add about $85 for the RAM because you will need more than 128 MB that comes with eMac...)

Cube has some serious fans and i've never seen one for under a grand (used), and that's without a monitor.

ditto.

Absolute best deal at Apple right now is the eMac with Combo. Only get the SupeDrive if you you really think you will use it.

Get it refurb if you can find it, but new is fine. Also, if you can qualify, EDU discount.

Definitely not a Cube, that's for sure...you rarely see even the stock configurations used for under $800.

I saw a 15" 800mhz g4 imac at the apple store the other day for 800. It looks tons better and doesn't consume nearly as much power. I would guess its also quieter. But if you want processing power, definitely go with the emac.

eMac, iMac

Its a win-win either way; the money you'd save with the emac will let you pick up a nice set of HK soundsticks and maybe the woofer too, thought the imac does look nicer. You can get slightly higher res. on the eMac than the 15" iMac, but the LCD will be nice and cripsy.

If you go to a computer store after an update, you may be able to pick up a cheaper iMac model or whatever.

For example, ever since the G4 iBook introduction, Futureshop, the Bestbuy of Canada (is also now owned by Best Buy) is now selling 14" 900MHz G3 iBooks for approximately $1050 USD (its $1499 Cdn). That's an amazing price, since they used to sell the same model for around $450 more.
