What is the best way to upgrade my 3.0 JB 3GS to 3.1.2 JB ?

    Hi,

I do apologise for having to ask, but I have read all of the posts, and I am a little confused about teh best method to upgrade my original (so no tethered JB required) 3.0 3GS to 3.1.2? I don't need it unlocked (as I am on O2, just JB).

I wouldn't normally bother, but 6 of my apps are now telling me that a newer firmware version is required to run.

I have done a backup of my 3GS to iTunes (9.0.2.25), so all of my apps/music/videos are there), so do I simply do an official update (which iTunes asks me when I start it up and plug in my 3GS), which will obviously un-JB my 3GS, and then re-JB it afterwards using one of the *snow applications? and then re-install Cydia and re-install 3GUnrestrictor?

Or is there a better way? Maybe one where I won't have to go through the hassle of re-JBing afterwards, and it will keep all of my apps & music intact?

Thanks very much in advance for the help.

    Appreciated,
    Kevin.

You forgot the restore step after you upgrade to 3.1.2.

So can I just check the correct order. Is it:

    1. Update to official 3.1.2 via iTunes.
    2. Re-Jailbreak using Blackrain (best one to use?)
    3. Restore iPhone from iTunes (I take it this is a very simple process)
    4. Re-install Cydia
    5. Re-install 3GUnrestrictor (I take it I won't have to purchase this again)

And then I will be done.

I take it that there is no method quicker/easier than that to do what I want to do?

    Thanks,
    Kevin.

That is the easiest method, yes. You will have to reinstall your jailbreak apps, but Cydia will recognize your phone by its IMEI, so you should have no problem.

You should also be fine with 3G Unrestrictor, only having to pay for it the one time.

My question for the forum: It's been a while since I did the same upgrade as the OP, but I thought I just restored to a custom ispw rather than doing all the steps he outlined? Isn't that another way to do this?

And of course by custom ispw I mean one built with pwnage tool.

That was the kind of idea I had in the back of my mind, but I wasn't sure if I had to build a custom ispw firmware myself somehow, or if it was simply a case of obtaining a pre-JB'd one from somewhere, and then doing a Shift-Restore from iTunes, and pointing to the custom ispw file.

Creating the custom ipsw doesn't take that much time. For me, it was the restore in iTunes that took the most time.

Using a custom ipsw is a fine way of doing it, if you can obtain an .ipsw you trust (please don't ask here...distributing copyrighted materials is against the rules). You will still need to restore from backup, sync your data, and reinstall your Cydia apps.

I borrowed my gf's MB Pro and created a custom IPSW in just a few minutes. Worked like a champ and has been installed and running ever since.
