I have been doing some research and I am wondering what the positions of readers of MacRumors are on the legalization of marijuana for medical and/or recreational purposes (in the US - I know it's legal in some European countries).

It's been shown in studies that marijuana is healthier for a person than tobacco and alcohol.

Personally, I am all for legalizing marijuana for both medical and recreational purposes. I really have no problem with recreational as long as some laws are created, such as only using it on private property, etc.

I also think that if marijuana were legalized, taxed, and regulated by the government that we, as country, would save quite a bit of money and actually profit it from it. First, money wouldn't be spent on people who were growing, selling, and using it. This in turn would allow law agencies to focus on more serious crimes.

So what do you think? I'd like to hear from people where marijuana is legal too....thanks!

Little difference to Alcohol or Tobacco imho. Legalise it and tax it at Tobacco like levels.

I agree. By doing that the US could take a huge step toward having no debt.

I didn't vote because the wording is all wrong in the poll.

Marijuana should be legalized and sold in liquor stores like booze. Then tax it.

I'm not sure whether it should be fully legalised and commercialised, but I'd sure like to see it decriminalised.

I think marijuana should be legalized and regulated but I'm not getting my hopes up. The criminalization of pot in the United States can be linked to Harry J. Anslinger, the father of the War on Drugs.

    Dude, you got any Doritos?

While I rarely partake these days, I'm all for legalizing it, selling it and taxing it like we do liquor.

I personally wouldn't use it, but I think that marijuana should be legalized, and regulated like alcohol and tobacco. Legalizing more drugs would definitely save us the money of holding people for non-violent offenses, and probably cut down on crime overall.

While i never partake (never could smoke anything), I too think that it should be legalized and regulated like alcohol.

That is the single biggest misnomer around. Marijuana is not a drug. It is a naturally growing herb. It's a weed. The Navy used to use it to make line and ropes.

Heroin and Cocaine are drugs. Pot isn't.

Never used it (non-smoker), but for legalisation.

Yes, definitely. It shouldn't have been illegal in the first place and it would save tons of cash for the US and Mexican governments. I know a bunch of people who smoke it, and they're certainly not criminals.

I thought marijuana was the drug found within the cannabis plant?

It really depends on how one defines the word "drug". I was using the word in the context of government terminology.

I simply do not care if it is legal or illegal as long as I don't have to smoke it. Everyone around me can and will, I just simply don't.

Oh how I wish but I've long since given up on it ever happening.

There's a perfect living sample of a society living with it being mostly legal, or at least tolerated, (under certain circumstances in certain designated areas distributed by certain designated places) in Amsterdam. Looks like they're getting along just fine.

I thought cocaine comes from a plant also:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocaine

Heck for that matter so does hashish:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hashish

One could argue that pot is also a gatway drug, ie the gate way drug theory:

Do you think america needs another vise?

Hmm.. seems they want to clean up the streets a little and also push out some of the orginazed crime, drugs and human trafficking in the process:

I think the biggest difference between marijuana and drugs like cocaine is that marijuana remains unchanged from the time it's grown until the time it's used other then the drying process. Other drugs, like cocaine are altered.

so are opium poppy and coca plants (the leaves of the latter are also used as simply drug without refining)

and that's ignoring perhaps gazillions of others less known ones because they are harder to control and not as cheap available on the black market

I'm all for it. If its going to be legalized at all, do it nationally and not by each state. :)

Got to love the knee jerk reaction. Did you even read the article... probably not... it is a theory that has not been proven. But it has been discussed.

Didn't mention anything about crack cocaine.

You can say the same about some of the pot that is out there that is grown in labs and has been altered also:

    source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannabis_(drug)

Mixing and matching different strands of cannabis. Yeah that is done in the wild. So now you have taken a plant that is grown and mixed it with other plants thus altering it.

I'd like to see that "government terminology". A drug is usually defined as any chemical you take that affects the way your body works. There is a chemical called tetrahydrocannabinol which is used for pain.

No one has mentioned mushrooms, at least not that I noticed. Now, shrooms are all natural!:D They're illegal, too.

But then again you can go to Native American Reservations and partake legally.
