What the heck is folding?
Someone PLEASE explain this to me...
That explains it best.
at stanford there are scientists that study proteins and they use distributed computing, like seti, so that invidual computers can do processes and turn them in and they can simulate the folding of proteins. they study these and try to find cures for all sorts of diseases.
basically you download a program and it'll do the processes and turn them in to the standford servers. they made kinda a game of it with different teams (the macrumors team is 3446) each protein or WU work unit is worth different points anyway the link listed at the above post tells more info. I recommend trying it out, fold a few proteins for macrumors, its for a good cause and if you keep with it the competition can be quite fun.
