So I have a macbook pro from 2017. Replaced the screen as there was a cracked cable and they recently replaced the whole keyboard and battery I believe because some of the keyboard keys were failing. All this was done for Free at the Apple store as it was in one of the programs.

My wife has a very old macbook which has nearly died - it is very slow at boot up and just ancient.

Our questions is: Do we just buy her the Macbook Air and I keep my macbook from 2017 OR Do we buy one of the new macbook pros for me and she can keep my macbook pro from 2017?

Is cheapest macbook pro currently sold much better than my macbook pro?

Thanks for any tips!

The current Macbook Pro doesn't have the defective keyboard design and the replacement program for a 2017 model will be over in a year. So, a new one is way better.

Speed wise it depends on your uses. The new one is much faster. If you aren't getting close to the capabilities of your current MBP. You probably won't notice much difference.

From a happy wife perspective. Do you think she would prefer a used computer with a history of problems or a new one? I'd say get her the new computer rather than your old hand me down. When you need a new one. Get one then. Which will be an ARM model.

I would suggest getting your wife a MacBook Air, as the new ones are pretty powerful. As @velocityg4 suggests that means that you can wait for an Apple Silicon MBP for yourself.

In general: yes, unless you have a maxed out 15“ von 2017 which will be better than the base model 13“ of 2020.

Both solutions are reasonable. Budget, your needs, happiness:
  • As you wife has a very old computer, the MBA base model 2020 should be absolutely fine.
  • But your current machine would also be fine. Does she like it, in general? Does she get along with the keyboard? Is it ok in your household to transfer older devices?
  • What about your own use case? Do you depend on Windows/Bootcamp or on specialized software that will take some time to get ported to ARM Macs? Then you should get an Intel Mac now. Otherwise, as @velocityg4 says.
