I'm a new online gamer and I know you all will think I'm behind the times by a couple decades, but can someone explain to me what a ping (and/or) a ping level is.

I'm playing Unreal Tourn 2003 and Quake 3 on my PB 1 Ghtz on a DSL connection. What 'ping level' should I try for or what would you pro gamers suggest for to have the best online gaming?

    All tips are welcome!

    thanks for the help guys.

    The Ping in short

The Ping is a measurement of how fast a player's internet connection is in an online game. The shorter the ping level is, the faster the gameplay will be. For example, If you start a game of Unreal Tournament 2003 and find a server with a Ping of 50, that server would be ideal for you because information between your computer and it would travel fast. A server with a ping of 500 should be avoided because information between server and your computer would travel so slow that the other players' movements would seem jerky. In short, make sure that the server you join has a short Ping to play the smoothest game.
