What's the point of face detection?

Genuine question (it's actually sad that I have to state this, or else people will think I'm trolling)... On the iPhone default camera app, what's the point of face detection? It picks up the faces in the photo, but.... then what?

If I open those photos in iPhoto, will it do a similar thing to Google's Picasa, and ask me who those people are so it can sort it out in to categories?

I think it's so either the phone focuses on those faces automatically, or if you want to focus on a particular face then you tap the square. Happy to be corrected by someone more knowledgeable if not though.

Knowing where to auto-focus and auto-red eye removal are the main reasons.

its actually more than just focus

once it detects where faces are, it adjusts focus, aperture, white balance, etc in order to get the best picture with those faces in it.

It serves to populate the facial recognition field in the national database.

It's 2012 and we're all being watched closer than ever.

Denial fails to make anyone immune.

Face detection on the 4S is useless for focus. The sensor is so small that everything is in focus anyway so there's not much point to it. However that being said, I found the white balancing and expose quite good for faces.

You're kidding, right? Focus is far, far from useless on the 4S. Just like any other camera, it all depends on how far the subjects are from the background (or anything in the foreground), but there is certainly a distinct area of what's in focus and what isn't in nearly all of my pictures (unless I intentionally want it otherwise).

Oh, it gets better. I'm already on the list.

Staying at the Wynn in Las Vegas, insured that I was captured on their facial recognition database... linked to: .com / .gov / .org / et al, so as to track and report my every movement.

Google's got nothing on the Casino Association of Cyber Tracking.

    Such a distinction eh? :)

Hey, does any smartphone camera app have smile recognition?

One of my favorite things about my Sony Cybershot camera before I lost it, was the ability to set it to snap when the subject smiled.

It was especially handy when shooting stubborn toddlers :)

I just wish people would learn the concept of headroom when taking pictures....people should be required to take a basic photography class before being allowed to take a picture of a person!

What is the optimum length for my tinfoil extensions? Want to make sure I have the best chance of hearing everything.
