Hello Apple and Mac friends. I've forgotten what I was doing but an APFS formatted volume named 'Update' keeps mounting whenever I boot up (screenshot). What created this and could this be safe to delete using Disk Utility?

Thank you. Have a very blessed sunday and sunday chill.

This is part of the volume group for your system and should be normally hidden. It is used by the update process.
Thanks. Is this ok to delete? I plan to delete it using Disk Utility.

NO!

Sounds like you have a drive that has a newer version of the OS ... mounted while running an OLDER version of the OS.

Well, delete it if you want.
But the newer version of the OS may not boot any more.

I think this is some misfired Ventura update. It downloads over 4GB at a snails pace. You can get rid of it only by deleting what you can from /var/folders/** and rebooting, but don't do that because after a while it will start the whole thing again, along with the big slow download.

if you do this in Terminal you should see its snapshot:

tmutil listlocalsnapshots /

e.g.

the softwareupdate utility doesn't seem to know anything about it, there's nothing in /Library/Updates

I had one of these before, the common denominator seemed to be after an update to Safari Technology Preview, do you have that installed per chance @Alvin777 ? Upgrades to Monterey seem to get shot of it, so probably best to wait for the next one IMHO.

Thanks I remember canceling something, perhaps improperly but hard reset with the power button (or it could have been that brownout while I was sleeping when I timed the update for overnight), I guess I'll be stuck with this 'Update' Volume always mounting upon bootup for a year (+ a few GB of space it uses) but maybe later after my crucial projects are done, I'll most likely need to delete every volume and just fresh install everything.

Thanks again.

If you have not fixed it - I would try updating to the latest Monterey version once again.. If you're on some sort of beta profile then delete that too.

It looks like that the update to the OS went wrong and all the files it needed to install hasn't been properly deployed onto the system.

You can try either verifying or just choose to repair the Monterey drive and see if that will remedy this.

also what does the
Code:
mount
tell you?

Edit.. it does appear that I, once again, am commenting without reading.. seems that @madmin is onto something
