Just respond with, "Yeah! It's awesome!"

The iPhone and iPod Touch are two of the most popular consumer devices on the market. I really struggle to see what fault ANYONE would have with a giant version, even if that's really not all the iPad is.

"You bought a large coffee? Isn't that just a giant version of the small cup?"

I would respond with, 'well that's the point.' I like having a bigger screen to view video and web browsing it makes for a more superior experience.

Well then, I would respond with "I'd rather have more touchy, than less touchy. Wouldn't you?"

I just get close enough that I could lick their face if I were so inclined, and scream SHUTTHE****UP.

Then I smile and walk away.

I just mime a telephone conversation and tell them:

"That was January on the phone. Can they have their b******t back, please?"

Whenever someone says "it's just a big iPhone", insults the iPhone, 'cause iPhone can make calls, send text messages, take photos, shoot videos...

So stop calling it a "big iPhone"!

I actually agree with them when they say that and have even compared it to them myself when someone asks what I use it for...I say pretty muchnthe same stuff I use my iPhone for but its much easier and better due ton the screen size and speed.

I heard a good retort on the MacJury podcast... "so a swimming pool is just a large bath tub?"

I say it is a big iPhone/iPod touch. I hated reading on my iPhone, for me it was too small, with the iPad I have no problems reading. I use it to take notes at work something I never would have done with my iPhone.

...BUT calling it a "big iPod Touch" is OK, 'cause it pretty much is one and iPod Touch sucks too.

Does it really matter that much? I know it's just a nice big iPod Touch that does a bit more. Frankly it is suiting my needs as my eReader (read more of a Kindle book I owned last night), and a media consumption device (someone used that term and I love it). I couldn't care less what people think about my purchase. I already got a ration of **** last night for buying it, it was easy enough to hang up the phone on the douche bag bitching at me.

Why do people resent the "it's just a big iPod touch" phase so much? I mean, it is perfectly normal to hear someone upgrading to a 60" flat panel HDTV. No one would ever say "well, it just a large version of my 27" TV.

I think the problem stems from the fact that the "Apple tablet" rumor had been around ever since I can remember. And people had expected it to be more like a tiny version of MacBook running some lite version of OS X. When they see that it is, hence the big iPod comment. In retrospect, the fact that iPad is running off the iPhone OS is a great idea, because the result is super battery life. After Web browsing for a couple of hours + 3 hour of video streaming, it still has 50% battery juice. That's the whole point of a portable device for traveling.

I think that most people who are dissing the iPad right now are actually already dreaming or will be dreaming of owning one in the future

when I got my first ipod touch, I pre ordered, people said it was retarded because it was so big and there's no point in having a touch screen,
now look, the iPod touch is one of the most popular, if not the most, gadgets owned by the average person

Just wait and see, iPad is going to get more popular among the average consumer in the fall and especially at holiday season

It's a logic board from an iPod Touch with 2 laptop batteries. If you consider that, the battery life is pretty crap.

I see it the other way, the iPod Touch is really just a small iPad. I see someone already posted that, so let me say "I agree".
IMO the iPad is 100x more useful than the iPod Touch, but that's just my opinion as an iPad and iPhone owner :D

I've seen some good analogies. Is a sword just a big dagger? Is a movie theatre just a big tv? As these examples show, same form factor but larger size can involve significant differences.

Yes, the iPad IS just a giant iPod touch. But I love it.

When compared to the expected competition, from a battery vs. features standpoint, it's easy to see why Apple made the iPad the way they did. I think they made the right trade-offs when choosing their feature set. 10+ hours of battery life is where the bar is now set for the tablet form factor. Anything less will be considered sub-standard.
