I've been running iTunes for years as the music manager (not music player) for audio. Playback is via Sonos.
I'm used to having iTunes running on a remote MacMini (another room), linking in via VNC and managing the files that way.
So that I can ensure backups work I have the iTunes files (iTunes Library.itl etc) stored in a folder on a NAS and accessed by the MacMini. Similarly the Music files (400GB or so) are in another folder on the NAS so that it can be accessed by the MacMini and by Sonos.

Every week I mirror the NAS folders for iTunes and Music to another NAS.

Now with Catalina the old structure of iTunes has gone. I can get the MacMini to recognise the Music folder on the NAS in the new Music app but where are the new version of the iTunes Library.itl files etc ? I still need to get backups of these. If I can't get the iTunes Library.itl fils to sit on the NAS then I'll have to adopt a radically new way of managing Music. No problem, but I need to know where they are.

Thanks

Originally I was annoyed by the fact that the library file now has to be in your home directory, but it's probably more sensible this way. Keep the bulk data (the music) on the NAS and the database (which needs reliable local file access and locking) in your local home directory.

It's easy enough to write up a cron job to periodically back that file up to your NAS, or you can just let Time Machine do it. No big. :)
