I bought a second hand Mac Pro 2009 6 core with 32 GB RAM on ebay. I will put my old ATI Radeon 5870 in it. I need a monitor and consider to buy a Samsung or AOC 28 inch.

I use the Mac for surfing the net, Office, DTP and photo and video-editing.
Yes, they have a TN panel but I always stay right in front of the monitor, so I guess this won't be a problem.
The AOC is cheaper but I heard the Samsung has better quality. Is it true?

The 5870 can't drive 4k displays at 60Hz, so you'd be limited to 30Hz, which can be pretty unpleasant and slow for some users.

I'd recommend buying a Sapphire RX 580 Pulse 8GB card if you wish to use 4K/5K screens. This will very much future-proof you cMP.

I have a Geforce 980 which would be sufficient for a 4k upgrade. But I made a mistake. I bought a 27 inch HP es 1920x1080 and the screen quality is inferior compared to my 23 inch Apple Cinema Display. I will return it. Is the Samsung 28 inch u28590ds much sharper? Is it nearly as sharp as an iMac 4k?

I have this monitor, it's really good but the colors aren't that great because it's a TN Panel not IPS. If you can swing it, go with a IPS 4K or a 2560x1440 IPS. TN Panels look kind of washed out.

Dell is better in quality,

This site has loads of selection with decent prices

IPS or nothing. Tired of the washed out effects of TN panels. It looks about as cheap as you can get.

1440p or above, IPS.

I actually still very much enjoy my 27" Apple Cinema Display. And I game quite a bit. I suppose these days, I'd be looking for a 120hz or above IPS @ 1440p. Theyre out there.

I think Apple said they would start getting back into monitors. Let's hope they leap above 60Hz.

I have a 24" Dell U2415. It's a great monitor. It's 16:10 aspect ratio so it's about the same height as a 16:9 27" (~0.2" shorter and ~3" narrower.) However, it's only 1920x1200 resolution. For 4K the 27" U2718Q looks like a good monitor. Both are IPS.

Seconding the recommendation for Dell. It's not dirt cheap, but the P2415Q is IPS, UHD, supports DisplayPort 1.4, and 60Hz at full resolution. As Nvidia has web drivers for Pascal cards, there are relatively inexpensive cards like the Quadro P600 which can drive up to four 4k displays. (It's also tiny compared to the stock Apple Radeon cards, so you'll free up a PCI slot for something else.)

If you need a new GPU I recommend a card that has native drivers because the Nvidia web driver is kind of buggy. When I had a Pascal card installed sometimes my Mac would freeze up and occasionally restart due to a kernel panic, especially when it was sleeping.
