Well while all eyes are on the southern border, the House decided to deal with the fact that the budget was due in mid-April but now it's June...

So they put up a fast track budget bill that once again offers Congressional committees another shot at repealing the ACA, proposes massive cuts to Medicaid and private "premium support" competition to Medicare to help offset the cost of 2017 tax cuts, cuts to assorted social contract programs, and yes, it even tacks in yet more tax cuts, via extending some cuts past the sunset date given for cuts of the first round. The package is meant to appeal to Trump's supporters with respect to social spending cuts and extension of tax cuts to individuals.

God knows if it will appeal to congress critters wanting to see Spending Slowed Right The Hell Down. This is not that bill. This is trying to make the tax cuts of 2017 not look so obscene by pasting some social contract cut fig leaf shreds over the costs. And hoping ACA drops dead without ending up swelling the Medicaid rolls with people who cannot work and have no medical coverage, but hey, anything is possible once the pig has flown. The pig... is on the runway.

They are trying fast-track in order to avoid a filibuster on the Senate side. So 50 votes should do it there assuming they can keep their side together. That assumes the Senate does not decide to put up its own budget, which is... maybe a safe bet and maybe not. They hope to avoid a government shutdown by not carping about proposed 2019 discretionary spending levels. However they plan to pay for increased defense spending by making cuts to domestic programs "in later years".

If you get what's happening here and are even slightly discomfited by any of it, now is a good time to call your Congressman because committee vote on the thing is Thursday --yes, this Thursday-- with a full House vote possible next week. But then this Congress hasn't had the best luck with its plans for fast tracking stuff except that tax cut bill.

Profit in medicine is no good, unless the goal is to raise profits and medical costs, unload the government, while loading up citizen’s costs, with large for-profit entity schemes, a big success, right? Republicans, are you feeling giddy?

My impression that shunting off Medicare “premium support” to for-profit entities to compete with traditional Medicare is the latest attempt to reduce government costs, undermine Medicare, just like school vouchers undermine the public school system, while socking it to us, citizens who have paid into this system for a lifetime.

By all means destroy the stystem, don’t mend it, a GOzp speciality. Just like they scream about the ACA for years but have no viable alternative. They don’t want government involved, the goal is destruction. If we let these people continue to run the ship onto the rocks until there is no ship, we have no one to blame except ourselves. The wealthy will still have their yaughts, and the vast majority, will be drowning or have an inner tube and a paddle to dodge the financial sharks that are after them or just resign themselves to having no medical insurance.
