I haven't been able to find 38mm to demo in my area so I can't make a real comparison on my wrist but it seems like the classic buckle on stainless steel looks the best among all apple watches, as it seems to have some stylistic cues from a traditional timepiece (2 rolexes, 2 panerai and 1 patek, also some g-shocks) but still retaining that smartwatch look.
The aluminum just didn't seem good to my eyes while space gray kind of looks nice, as at least in pictures, the space gray seemingly resembles the (matte) ceramic finish of a black seal Panerai watch, which i love.
But since I haven't tried these two in person, I'm not so sure which pictures to believe, since in some pictures, the space gray looks rather cheap.

The dilemma here is that I don't really think that the first generation apple watch is worth $649, or $300 more than the sport.

It really comes down to how I will use the apple watch: if I end up using it just for working out and lounging about at home, then I would probably prefer to get the sport.
But if I actually use it for not only working out, but also traveling or hanging out, then I should probably go ahead and get the stainless steel or the space black.

What do you guys think?
Does the Space Gray look nice like a ceramic watch? Or does it look cheap?
Did anyone return the space gray and get the apple watch in stainless steel?
Does anyone also collect traditional watches and tried to use the apple watch in a rotation?

Also I'm thinking about buying one for my wife, who currently rotates a collection currently.
Should I buy her the stainless steel? aluminum? she's said that she doesn't really want it, although I think she's just saying that.

I did... the screen on the space grey was separating from the casing so i used that to my advantage to return it... get a free sports band and order ss with leather loop and save another 50.

I think it's a personal choice. What looks good to you might not look good to me.

Totally agree with this. I looked at Space Black and Space Grey in the store, and decided that I liked the matte look of Space Grey better. But it's a totally personal thing, depending on your sense of style. If you can't make it to a store to take a look, then the only way to be sure of your choice is to order both and return the one you decide not to keep.

one additional concern is that the nicest strap options are not available for the 38mm Space Gray.
I would really like to have maybe one or two of these black leather classic buckle, black leather loop and green sport, but the buckle lugs wouldn't match, leather loop is not avail for 38mm and green has to be purchased separately because only black rubber comes with the space gray.

what gives, apple?

It's a matter of taste ofc but in my opinion most of the sport bands work with the space gray watch. I recently bought a white one for mine and I do like the contrast/monochrome look. i think blue and green would work as well.

EDIT: I'd love to see the leather loop for the 38mm, which unfortunately doesn't seem to happen.

Just thought I'd post a quick reply to this thread to say I've done exactly that.

I returned the Space Grey after exactly a week after much research to confirm you can't get the Apple black link bracelet as a separate item (watch and bracelet are a single SKU), and the 3rd party bands, the nice ones, are just silver stainless steel, not black.

It was my intention from the start to get a SS link bracelet with the watch, so not being able to buy the black one killed my dreams off.

Although the Space Grey was a great display (will be better than sapphire), the plastic band just looks cheap to me.

I tried the leather loop, and that was nice, but the design is such if you catch the end of the loop that is magnetically held to the underside of the loop, without any kind of fastener, it just "un clasps", and dangles down meaning the watch could just "slip of your wrist". Not a risk I'm willing to take.

So I'm having to "upgrade", as there are too many compromises IMHO in keeping the Space Grey.

Selling some stuff on ebay to be able to afford the new watch.. Sigh!!!!

Not trying to argue, but in my light perusal of watch bands on Amazon, I found several third party sellers who have black SS bands for the Apple watch already. Also, while the Apple OEM SS link bracelet isn't currently available for purchase, it likely will be in the future. That model watch is currently the one that was mentioned specifically as having a longer wait time to fulfill. So of course Apple won't sell the band separately right now. Just something else to consider.

fishmd.

Could you please post a link. All I could find was black "milanese" look-a-like's, and the quality looked a bit dubious to my eyes.
I also doubt any of the black 3rd party straps would have a "dlc" coating as well, but heck, that's what you get for a £30 knock off.

I've ordered the AW now anyway. I do doubt they will sell the black SS link seperately as both watch and links are "DLC" coated, hence sold as a single SKU. The cost will probaby be around £400+ so include the price of the sports watch as well, for a little extra.. may as well go for the model I want.

I did, I ordered a 42mm SG sport and had it for about a week. I liked the watch but I like the look of stainless steel watches a lot better. So I sold it on Craigslist for a nice profit and ordered a 42nm stainless steel classic buckle as well as 2 leather loop bands (blue & black) and a black sport band.
