I'm almost 30, but i still remember those golden years when i was 15-16 when street fighter 2 hit all the arcades around the UK. everyone was playing it and it was so much fun. this is a game which i am sure the iphone could handle easily, maybe even one of the newer versions like street fighter alpha!

so my question is would you like to see this game ported over to the iphone and would you buy it?

i think i would buy this in a heart beat! :)

i made the image below just for demonstration purposes...

I love the game but can't imagine how it'd play on a touch screen. Quite hard to pull those special moves off!

really? i can imagine the controls being pretty simple, most of the hardest moves only require a mere 'C' shape on the D-pad combined with a punch or kick button.

take the dragon punch for example, it's a simple motion from say 9oclock to 12 oclock on the D-pad while pressing punch.

Without a hardware pad it would be unplayable.

Rubbish. As long as you can still jump and heavy kick Zangief would be toast. Everyone else might be difficult though ;).

i think they could do it if they did the same kind of controls that Funky Punch uses.

or at least along those lines.

Yeah, and Funky Punch's controls aren't good at all, and that game doesn't need anywhere near as precise controls as Street Fighter 2. Virtual d-pads can work but not for fast-action games that need precision. And virtual buttons only work if they are pretty darn big. I would love Street Fighter 2, but I voted no because it just isn't possible to make it the same game and have it be fun on the iPhone due to the controls.

If they figure out the controls, I'd pay up to $100 for this game. ok, maybe not that much.

They could copy Real Soccer controls xD.

Actually the Real Soccer controls pretty much cover Street Fighter.

But that would take up a lot of space...

And yes, I would definitely love this! Used to be the only game I played :p (the series...dunno if it was specifically "2").

I agree, and would love to see side scroll arcade ports to the iphone, like Mortal Kombat, etc. However the controls would have to be simple and not cumbersome.

Unplayable, the screen would be showing nothing but your fingers as you try to use the on screen pad for all those button combinations. Another reason I don't see this knocking down PSP/or the DS like alot of the people I hear say it could do.

people who think the iphone will replace or beat the psp gaming wise are living in another world. the psp is a dedicated gaming device, the iphone is a phone albeit with some great gaming potential. people should just enjoy them for what they are and stop making it a silly competition.

well, like others have said, it'll probably only have two buttons, which will probably make most of us a little hard to get used to...

Why not just show it in letter box 4:3 with the touch controls in the sides? Would be difficult with the lack of tactile feedback and it would lose some screen estate but I think it could work. :)

The lack of tactile feedback *is* the problem. No virtual d-pad game that requires fast reflexes has ever worked. Not to mention six buttons on the screen would take up more than half of it.

i don't think a street fighter port would suffer from touch screen D-pad controls any less than other games such as real soccer, funky punch, etc...who all have combinations and special moves with the controls, and even with those i have to constantly look at the touch screen D-pad to see where the hell my fingers are and if they are actually on the D-pad, it does get annoying but hey, it's the price we pay for having a touch screen phone, and after a while you naturally know where's what.

now is that a reason not to have these kind of games on the iphone? most definitley not, they are still playable and alot of fun as i'm sure we'll all agree.

I think a SF2 port would work, the controls would obviously have to be adjusted and compromised for use with the iphone, so instead of 6 buttons, maybe 4 buttons, 2 slightly larger than than the other 2. so medium punch and kick, and slightly larger hard punch and kick. and the D-pad would be like any other in the bottom left corner.

ofcourse it won't better the experience one would have with a real D-pad, but it doesn't mean the game won't be a success, it just means it would take a couple of days to get used to a touch screen D-pad interface.

i'm sure a SF2 version on the iphone would be alot of fun, combine that with multiplayer functions and thats a whole other bag of fun waiting to be had.

i'm just being optimistic about this, i really think it can be done and iphone users in general would really enjoy this game in their pocket. hopefully if it ever comes to fruition, the devs will release one of the newer versions of SF, maybe SF Alpha or something, since the original SF2 is now very old and kinda boring compared to the newer versions with more characters, special moves, etc.

k i just messed around with the image in photoshop and came up with this. i know it looks a bit cramped but i'll be willing to bet the game would still be fun as hell, and it's not like the characters remain on opposite ends of the screen anyway, they'll be jumping and flying all around the place (just saying becayse i know the d-pad and buttons are in front of them)...so i thought 4 buttons would do nicely, 2 hard, 2 medium...

what do you all think, could this interface work?

no thanks. if you want to play a console game, get a console system. until the iphone comes out with one of those tactile controller addons, this obviously is a terrible idea.

OT: Is Street Fighter II HD Remix even out yet?

I only ask because my sorely neglected 360 wants to know. :D

i don't see how funky punch is fine but as soon as the same idea is applied to a different game it's suddenly a terrible idea? obviously any fighting game will have to be slightly limited for the iphone controls, which is why i mentioned 2-4 buttons instead of the original 6.

nevertheless, each to their own i guess.

I don't see it working either, but I would probably get it if it were available.

Especially if it were one of the variants that had all the Marvel characters in it....

as much as i love Street Fighter (those were some awesome days as a kid), i can't see it happening on the iphone. For long period of play, i think i would have a good chance of dropping the iphone.

Thank goodness for my PSP ;)

i do hope they release some lucas retro games like day of the tentacle, monkey island etc. i'm glad Namco is taking the time to bring their retro games (even though they are a tad overpriced). i thought it was a nice + that namco actually took the time to redo some of the graphics for that old school race game.
