Myself, there would have to be something pretty special for me to upgrade.

If I do, I'll definitely go for a SS, seeing as they are so easy to polish off scratches and the screen is rock solid.

How about you?

I'd be coming from a silver SS 8, by the way.

I’m an infrequent upgrader coming from an aluminum S5. It looks like a turd after years of use, so this year I’ll be deciding between the SS S9 and the new Ultra.

My son and I are starting to get into geocaching so between that and the significantly better battery life I’m leaning towards the Ultra.

I think I may for an ultra this year. I do not need it but I like look of it. I just found out I do not have to activate the cellular on it, and allow to work through my phone. I could have used the depth gauge part of it when I was younger and did a lot of scuba diving. I am usually a very conservative buyer but in this case I just want it.

I really do not like the aesthetics of the Ultra.

But if you like it, I’m pleased for you.

Care to share a photo of your beat up watch?

I know the feeling of just wanting something.

I am using an aluminum Apple Watch 7. Not sure if I will update. I really need to see the presentation first. The 8 was too uninteresting to upgrade so lets see what number 9 (number 9, number 9, number 9....) brings this fall.

Also thinking about getting an SS maybe.

I love the features of the Ultra but it is definately faaaaar to big for my wrist.

Also far too big on my wrist.

I don’t like the design, either.

I wear the 41mm SS which I like.

I have a Stainless Steel Series 6 that was replaced less than a year ago through AC+. Not sure if I’ll upgrade this year as it runs so good.

I've been caching for 10+ years and can say, in my experience, the phone is the only, and best tool, you need. I'd be interested if you find the watch in any way helpful. And especially interested because I don't see the official geocaching app as installable on my watch. Are there others that are?

My S3 is still working great

And it does everything I need it to do and does it well

Low storage bu I can manage

I have a fair bit of experience orienteering/navigating back country, so I’m hoping to just use the compass app on the watch, mainly for coordinates to find caches. I don’t care about the app features (just interested in the hunt), so I’m hoping the watch will be enough for me. Maybe I’m just under-informed about how it works, but we did just find 2 caches while on vacation in Hawaii using only coordinates.

The pictured S5 is a replacement I got about a year ago after my battery hit 79%. The original launch model I had was much, much worse after 3 years. I’m not exactly easy on my devices, and I won’t hesitate to thoughtlessly stick my arm in a computer case, engine compartment, or into some construction material.

This was my second watch (I upgraded from an aluminum S1 that was similarly beat up after a few years), and I think I’m ready to spend a bit more this time. I’m especially excited about the prospect of an A15 based CPU.

Edit: I wouldn’t say I like the aesthetic of the Ultra. I feel indifferent about it at best and definitely like it less than the S7/8 body. But the significant increase in battery life is very compelling as I’d love to be able to rely on my watch and leave my phone behind 75% of the time. My S5 is not reliable enough for that.

That's awesome and welcome to the hobby/game/sport/past time. The hunt is definitely the fun and I guess you'd need to get the coords to the watch as a location point to do it that way. Sounds interesting!!

Hello Dan,

Where you one get started in this activity?

I’m looking for (no pun intended) a new hobby.

Thanks.

I am considering the second Ultra 2 to replace my Alu S9. If it’s a yawn upgrade I may look for a cheap first gen Ultra instead.

I run and hike so hoping the Ultra is not too big for my wrists that it interferes with the heart rate recording while running, and at the same time keen to see what they do with the new Compass app and topo maps. But most of all - multi day battery life.

I have a Series 5 and I would love to upgrade to something, but honestly the watch upgrades have been so mediocre that even after 4 years I don't think there's anything that would compel me to spend the money on a new one unless this one stops working.

I've got a Series 5 as well, and I've been hoping the new SoC in the 9 will result in better battery life. That'll be something that'll trigger an upgrade for me.

And as the other poster said, my aluminum version is starting to look pretty beat up, so I may go SS this time around.

I don't think the size of the Ultra would negatively affect heart rate monitoring. Despite being bigger than regular Apple watches, the Ultra fits "flatter" against the wrist, creating a more secure fit. I wouldn't be surprised if you got more consistent heart rate recording from the Ultra than the regular watch.

I am planning to buy this year... my S7 has several big scratches on the crystal. What I buy will be determined by what Apple offers. I prefer a black case (space grey)... but dark titanium Ultra S2 will also work.

I took an ultra and an s7 out for a run (one on each wrist) and the hr was pretty much identical on both, the only issue was the ultra took about a minute or two to get a reading whereas the s7 was going from the start. This might be the OS though as the ultra was on 9.6 and the s7 on 10 beta 2.

My current AW8 is my first AW and I like its health/fitness tracking. I didn’t expect to wish I got the GSM version but as it turns out, being able to go out on a run without having to bring a phone is incredible…

So I’ll be getting the GSM version of AW9 as soon as it comes, regardless of what new features it gets, and then selling my AW8.
