It gives the Romans something to distract themselves. Penn State should have been torn down, nuked and every student that chose to attend there forced to wear a scarlet letter for a thousand years for what they did.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

It's beneficial to the power structure to have entertainment spectacles that people can focus on instead of the fact that the promises of their nation aren't being fulfilled due to the greed of said powers.

That's not to say that sports have no value, but professional sports themselves are arguably a form of religion for large swaths of the population....ones that leech billions from taxpayers in the forms of tax breaks to finance stadiums that never deliver on the economic promises made for those breaks.

Pretty much every country glorifies sports in one way or another. The Brits (and the Brazilians) get crazy about football (soccer); the Australians go nuts for cricket. Back in the day the bad old USSR used to spend crazy amounts on their hockey teams.

Government subsidies for sports stadiums in this country are indeed a topic worthy of discussion. Because the economic argument against them seems pretty airtight. But who wants to be the Mayor or Governor who signs off on letting a beloved local franchise slip out of town?

    Catharsis.

Some people like unwinding by watching people run around holding a ball or hitting a ball with a stick and then whine when those folks go on strike all while supporting double standards elsewhere combined with their own reduced value as imposed.

Anything else seems more tangential or taking advantage of the human condition.

Not airtight, since it is utterly contradictory to the very "free market" they otherwise support. They are ultimately leeches, using fraud to fleece all the taxpaying people. You've probably heard the phrase before, "Privatize the profits while socializing the losses". Now if that's the form of socialism people hate, that's great. Our money needs to go to our benefit - not the benefit of a tiny handful of people.

Never mind the tax cuts, tax exempt status, and other entitlements they also get that are no less anti-free market. It's not even socialism, it's closer to "corporatism" - Mussolini's favorite word he coined.

Because we are 'tarded? It irks me that billionaires ask for government subsidies. I thought they made it all by themselves.

Human nature for most, it's about competition. Competition is human nature.

The Dems do sports too, they just don't keeps score, they give everyone a trophy. It makes them feel like winners.

Equality of outcome vs equality of opportunity.

I'd say we Americans are quite tame. Canadians trashed a city during the NHL playoffs, footy hooliganism is at an all time high, people get into fights at tennis matches, etc.

We have done it to ourselves by paying the outrageous prices for tickets to sporting events, and the even more outrageous prices at the concession stands.

Athletes get million dollar contracts, soldiers get bupkis. Athletes get million dollar contracts, while other professions requiring higher degrees and years of experience, won't see a million in their lifetime.

It is injustice, but we (the American people) have allowed it to happen. And it will continue to happen until there is a boycott on professional sporting events. I honestly don't see that happening.

Americans don't glorify sports. The media glorifies sports, entertainment, politics, war, and on and on. Without the media telling people what they should think and watch, things would be wildly different.

Injustice? Try to get to the NFL/MLB/MLS/NHL, then you can talk about injustice. There are certainly less MLB players (that actually make a boatloat of money $$$) than CEO's. Being a sports pro is not for the faint of heart. Now, I agree that there is an unbalance between Majors and Minors (read the book "Bottom of the 33rd" about the longest professional baseball game, 33 innings. It talks about the life in the minors, where players have to work two or three jobs in order to survive).

Stupidity mostly. In the UK there are University sports, but you'd never find a university stadium that holds 100,000 (or even a professional soccer team stadium that big). I like watching all sorts of sports, and think professional athletes should be paid and treated well, but at some point the fawning over athletes just gets absurd. Some sports aren't even healthy...

Not sure Americans hold a candle to some of the Euro and Latin countries when it comes to soccer (football).
