If you want a bigger screen, more storage for cheaper, or prioritize battery life over all else (and aren't doing any OLED optimization like Smart Invert, etc.) it absolutely is an upgrade.

Where are the people saying it's an upgrade over an XS? Who is buying an XS and then deciding they want a "better" product versus returning it and getting an upgrade that makes more sense to them (the XR?)

It's not an upgrade over the Xs, but compared to the X... depending on your priorities it could be an upgrade. If you value OLED, telephoto lens, 3d touch, and slimmer build on the X, the Xr is not an upgrade. But everything else, the Xr is an upgrade to the X. Although it isn't a spec, but saving money to me is also an upgrade lol.

Benefit of Xr over X:
Better processor (The Xr will outlast the X at least one additional year of iOS updates.)
Better rear wide angle camera
Better portrait editing
Better battery life
Better colors
Bigger screen
Better memory options (128gb)

Benefit of X:
OLED
Telephoto rear camera
3D Touch
Slimmer build

Does that make you feel uncomfortable?

It is not you who decides whether it is an upgrade or not.

If you think the new processor, better main camera, bigger screen, bigger battery is not worth over the last generation phone, well that’s your call. Who am I to judge?

Just keep your X, keep your 8 plus, keep your note, but don’t come and tell me what I should or shouldn’t consider an upgrade.

There isn’t a rule, this isn’t math. It is an user based experience.

I ditched the new XS for the XR. And yeah, for me that was and upgrade. Why?

Because now my phone lasts 2 days minimum on a charge. My Xs used to last less than a day. I need battery and I don’t work in a office, so that’s my number one priority. Any phone delivering me that is an “upgrade”.

I liked the bigger screen, I liked the colors, I liked the wider portrait photos. And I regret the day I bought the XS.

And you know what? If I had an X, it was going to be an even bigger upgrade.

It’s my money, it’s my priorities and it’s my call, not yours.

Enjoy your iPhone and happy new year!

The XR with the same 1080p screen as the plus would have been ideal. I wonder how much apple saved by going 828p. Would they have been able to make it 1080p and just added $50 per phone?

It’s only an upgrade over an XS if you want wide angle portrait mode shots, better battery life and a larger screen.

It’s generally more future proof than an X with newer tech and a larger, yet lower resolution screen, than an X.

Me personally I take a lot of pics and consider the XR to have a better camera.

Never visit a forum to validate your purchase. If you are happy with your decision, isn’t that all that matters?

It’s like asking opinions on cars. Should I get a truck, SUV, or sedan? This is subjective as different people will value different attributes which will affect the ultimate preference.

On paper, the XR is superior to the X in some areas (processor, screen real estate, battery life, etc) but not in some others such as PPI, contrast ratio, etc.

Based on what I’ve seen here, people are seemingly overall more content with their XR purchases vs when the X came out last year and a lot of this probably has to do with value.

Why do you care what other people feel is an upgrade? Does it affect you? No. Move on and enjoy the products you like.

People come here for purchasing advice all the time. It would be misleading and downright dishonest to tell them the XR is better than the more expensive phones. It has an inferior screen, one less GB of RAM and uses cheaper materials such as aluminum instead of stainless steel. Apple would not charge you less for a better product. I'm not accusing anyone of anything, but it would be really selfish if there where people in here that hold AAPL shares and are trying to sway potential customers to buy XR phones, so that their share price goes up for personal financial gain.

Because Apple says the XR is an upgrade over the X.

In the iPhone Upgrade Program, iPhone X users are asked to upgrade to XR.

Apple's own iPhone Comparison page puts the XR above the X.
