I don’t do anything different?

It’s one feature that I really like.

It depends if the iPhone is able to gather the GPS-position before you take the photo.
If so, the photo will contain the position, if not, it won't.

When i'm on vacation and want to ensure, the photos taken include the exact position, i first just shortly open the navigation app (in my case magic earth), to verify my position - eventually waiting for GPS-lock-in of the position.
