Why do some posters choose avatars that immediately make others think of them unfavorably?

I have pondered this question at various times over the last number of years I have been on MacRumors.

Do some individuals get off on finding the most obnoxious images they can, simply to draw attention or comment?

Do some think it accurately portrays their personality (ugh)?

Do some just think it's an amusing touch?

In complying with forum rules, I won't mention which avatars I personally think fall into this category, but I'm sure others have had similar feelings.

In the overall scheme of things this is a pretty trivial and irrelevant thread, but I'm curious as to what others feel.

I don't know that I've ever judged a poster by their avatar. I know I can sometimes look at an avatar and realize who it is before seeing the name if they post frequently.

I'm probably more sensitive (and crotchety) than you over unimportant things. Probably comes with old age. :)

I cannot speak for others, I come on this forum to practice my English writing and have a good time discussing political topics.

I remember something my father said to me " Always treat with respect others, even those you disagree with "

as to my avatar it's a bunny and I'm a happybunny

I find your avatar to be quite aesthetically pleasing, as opposed to ...

For the longest time I had avatars turned off (I don't think that feature is available with this current forum software) and I've turned off signatures. Both can unnecessarily color the impression one gives off. All I care about are the words in the post.

One thing I've noticed however ... if you've incorporated the internet troll into your avatar ... that's a strong hint to the quality (or lack thereof) of posts one can expect from you.

On the subject, not that I think your avatar is unpleasant or annoying (I enjoy the symmetry actually), is there a significance to the tire, or just a pleasing circular image?

Just a bit of an inside joke. I wanted to choose something very plain and mundane.

I imagine its because they don't find their avatars unfavorable and want to associate with others who are similar while irking those who do.

It isn't, but you can do it yourself pretty easily.

That confederate flag avatar guy always makes me giggle. But I don't really care. I'm sure my avatar grinds some gears. Too bad.

You seriously don't know where that "bunny" in your avatar comes from?

I was being ironic, because like the whole world and his dog knows, that it's from Donnie Darko 2001.

There are some avatars that are kinda creepy and disturbing-looking. But that’s intentional, no?

I once made an avatar that utilized a photo of an actual shrunken head.

I think Calwizard's avatar is the most offensive thing I've ever seen. Brushed aluminum is a crime against nature and humanity.
