I think services to find out whether you're online or not cause too much load, so they've been disabled.

Perhaps try reinstalling, considering it sends you to the skype page. (unless of course you have already done this)

It looks like bousozoku is prolly right because he also has a greyed skype logo. How come skype is more intensive on the forum load than yahoo?.

The other icons are static--they're not showing online status. If that were the case, I'd be online with Yahoo! Messenger and it's not active at all right now.

In that case wouldn't it be a good idea for Macrumors forums to make their own blue skype logo and use it as a static, like the yahoo one?

Here's one I just reconstructed from my dock icon if the webmaster wants to use it.

From what I gather bousozoku is saying is that the icon would not care what your actual live status is as it is not connected to find out anyway.

But it is puzzling where the grey logo originated from.

The gray icon is obviously the one where it doesn't know whether you're online or not. The application icon changed recently from green to blue.

The forum online indicator is the only one that works to show activity.

We went through a period in the forums whether the indicator was being supplied with information but it seemed to be timing out.

If it can be done easily, I'm sure one of the gods will be willing to switch the icons at some point in time.
