Why is Nobel Peace Prize winner Obama going to attack Syria when they had NOTHING to do with 9/11?!

Syria is no threat to the US, but Obama, who never served in the military, is going to send our military into harm's way again! And without the approval of Congress or the UN!

First we bomb Syria, then we invade, then we drill. No Blood for OIL!

What's the point of this thread?

Nobody said they were related to 9/11...

Are you babbling nonsense again just because you hate Obama?

He's just following the nearly century long tradition of American presidents trying to own the world.

That said, I'm sick and tired of this country acting like 9/11 was a reset point in time. Tragic, yes. Does it warrant what we have done in the Middle East and continue to do in the memory of that day? No.

It's been over a decade, we can't continue to use 9/11 to justify everything. Remember, but let's move forward.

^ however misguided the 9/11 connection that the OP posted, he's right. We have nothing to gain and the world has everything to lose by getting involved in Syria. We can't credibly say it's a human rights intervention because we've waited years.

Syria represents no threat to the United States. Opponents to the attack on Iraq by the Bush Administration cited as one of their justifications for obstructing that war that Iraq was not involved in 9/11, so we had no right to attack Saddam.

The same goes for Obama attacking Assad, wouldn't you say?

Exactly. I knew the second Obama stated "We don't want their chemical weapons to be used against us once Assad loses control" that we were going to war, no ifs ands or buts. It's a wordy roundabout way of using the same justification we went to war with Iraq over.

Syria doesn't have the ability to project it's power (weapons) all the way to our borders, there is not credible threat to the nation from Syria, even considering that an attack against our population is simply not a threat to the country itself.

But the Left made Iraq's non-involvement in 9/11 a justification for obstructing the War in Iraq.

There's no sell-by date on such arguments. It's as valid now as it was then.

That's an honest opinion that I respect.

Military involvement is going to kill more people than have died in the civil war, that is the end of the story. There is no military option to resolve the conflict in Syria. We all know the country is going to descend into even greater madness when in the ensuing power vacuum when Assad finally goes does. Just look at Egypt, Afghanistan, etc. Same old story, but we as a population for some reason think that the story ends when we kill the "bad guy" (whomever we decide to overthrow this particular involvement). Our population is so detached from our military actions that we truly believe we can solve international problems UBL raid style. It's a sad narrative that has been beaten into us with every hollywood movie for years. Somehow at the end of the day all we need is a better weapon and somehow peace will occur, it just doesn't make any damn sense.

You'll find that even though our motivations are different, we agree for the most part that there is no justification for our involvement here, especially with the understanding that force will just cause bigger issues as soon as the regime is overthrown. The actions this president is taking, just as his predecessor, is THE roadmap for a quagmire. I don't think this country can afford another decade long "peace keeping" mission, which is exactly what will happen when the **** really hits the fan. Syria is just getting started.

Guys, there is a legitimate topic to discuss here (though this may be a bit of a duplicate thread), can we address the topic and not the OP's posting history. He's got some points, whether you agree or not, that at least provide an interesting discussion.

No Bush made the allegation that Saddam Hussein was involved in the 9/11 attack. It was proven to be wrong. Going to war based on a lie? Who wouldn't obstruct?

Obama said that it was unaceptable for any nation to make use of chemical weapons. He is standing up to what he said 1 year ago.

Just admit it, this is all based on your hate on Obama and the liberals. You're so transparent, an open book reveals less than you do.

    ----------

He has no point, his argument is moot. It is all based on biased hate. This is not an invasion

Syria's oil-reserves are about 2% of Iraq's, so no that doesn't make much sense

This thread is just about "hurr hurt liberals suck" when there really aren't many real liberals supporting the action against Syria. And that's going on this weird assumption that Obama is a left-leaning president.

His entire first post, sadly, makes absolutely no sense.

I don't think the threat to U.S. borders is the point. Obama cited the relationship the U.S. shares with Turkey Jordan and Israel, nations that all border Syria and who could be threatened by the use of chemical weapons.

As far as US involvement goes, a few well placed tomahawks is about all I would like to see. Show Syria we mean business, I'm sure they will listen then. We do not have anything to gain by invading them, but who can stand by and watch women and children murdered with a clear conscience?
Tough job Obama has these days, Praying he chooses wisely.

....Are we going to own up to our own chemical weapons use? We've used weapons and tactics that the international community have banned for decades in the last ten years.

You can approved of a principled stance from a man with no principles (other than in speeches) when it comes to human rights? This is a man that directly called the Yemeni president to block THAT president from releasing a journalist (tribal pressure overwhelms the influence of Yemen's government) for reporting about drone strikes.

Ill answer you question with a question: who said that any invasion of Syria would be in response to 9/11?

One of the most random string of non sequiturs in a long time. When did the President state that this had anything whatsoever to do with 9/11? Syria has a tiny amount of oil-- what does that have to do with anything?

    Yep.

Of course, just as you always say.

So, just for the sake of argument, suppose that Assad actually is using chemical weapons on his own people? Somebody seems to be using chemical weapons-- even Assad does not deny that. He just says it is the rebels.

So, just for the sake of argument, there is a civil war doing on and one of the sides is using chemical weapons. Apparently the targets are civilians in rebellious areas.

Your recommendation is that the world stands by and does nothing? I just want to be clear about what your opinion is on this.

This whole Syria thing boils down to Obama's ego and desire to not look like he wavers on policy.

Something a democratic government should stay away from.

Syria must be punished for a cw attack either staged or perpetrated by terrorists themselves, that's the American approach.

All signs point to the rebels using sarin gas:
