This is a subject that keeps popping up here, from time to time and, oddly enough, it's usually progressives/liberals/Democrats that seem to be enamoured with the concept of mandatory "service" to the state. These same folks would be the first to decry the institution of slavery, and yet they fail to recognise that the very thing they are promoting is slavery to the state and the whims of statists. Professor Ilya Somin over at the Volokh Conspiracy just addressed this issue at a panel on mandatory national service. He more than makes the case that it is wrong and unjust. Sometimes people need reminding that "No means no" applies to ALL human interactions, including those instigated by government.

America’s biggest problem is a lack of mixing between social classes and between states.

Seems to me America's youth would be united across class and geographic lines in protest against mandatory national service.

I’m sure as hell not going to war at the behest of our oligarchs and arms dealers.
