Why would Apple not make the base model 128GB? I get that some people stream music/video, get their data from the cloud, blah, blah, blah, but with the size of apps and files growing, and the cost of memory falling, why not make 128GB the baseline? Especially given the high price points of the new phones.

On my phone right now, I have 15GB used by messages, 10GB used by photos, and 7GB used by podcasts. I have 62GB used by music, but that's because I have the "fill my phone with music" option turned on. And when I travel, I usually like to put a few full length movies on my phone.

I get that I could just go up to 256GB, but 128 is the sweet spot & Apple just eliminated that.

There was an article on flash storage supply issues this year including price increases on larger capacities. I believe iPad Pros got a price hike yesterday too...
The lack of a 128 version might be a logistics issues at this point. The 256 option was not priced like the 128 of last year, so that leaves a larger than normal gap in the lineup from a pricing standpoint that could be filled later on, like Apple sometimes does with a mid cycle refresh in the spring.

Remember when they first went to 128 and eliminate 64 people were whining about that and how 64 was the sweet spot?

This is probably what upset me most about the release lol

everyone has a different sweet spot.. someone is always out of luck ;)

but 64GB will be more than enough for most people, while 32GB was easy to fill up for everyone.

Greed and psychology. People spending a lot of money on the newest iPhone aren't going to want to get the smallest capacity phone. This way, they force people to spend the money to get the highest capacity phone.

128 offers an opportunity to raise prices next time they offer it. Oh that's why the iPhone is $300 more expensive this year, it starts at 128gb - makes sense.
