Hi

My TV set is 720p 1080i. Can I use the new Apple 4K TV, with my existing TV set. I have Fios TV. I am new to streaming.

Thanks

Given that, which should I purchase?

Well, there's actually only a $30 difference between the current Apple Tv & the new 4K version.

If you think you'll be updating your TV at some point in the future, you might want to go for the 4K. You'll already have a streaming box with that capability........if not, you can save $30!

If you don't plan to upgrade to a UHD TV in the forseeable future, there is no advantage in buying the ATV4K as far as video streaming is concerned. I'd look out for a special offer of the current ATV4 (or buy a refurbished one for $129).
Is the current ATV 4 getting the TV app update for live sports?

Hasn't been confirmed AFAIK, but I don't see why it wouldn't.

That's what I figured too. I hope the ATV4 remains equivalent to the new one just without 4K HDR capability. The fact that they're gonna keep selling the old one and only have a $30 price difference is encouraging.

The new one has a better CPU and GPU. Get the new one, it will probably be supported for at least a year longer than the previous model.

This. Significant hardware improvement when looking at the A10X vs the A8.

I always recommend buying the newest product you can. For the longest time, I think iPad updates were for all iPads past the second-generation one. Imagine the grief someone who got one of those to save a couple bucks over the third-generation ones when they came out dealt with. I had a similar situation when I got a Mac mini with the G4 processor and six months later the Intel processor switch happened.

It's only a $30 difference, so get the newer one.

If 30 dollar is a lot to you then just go for the ATV4. If not go for the ATV5.

EDIT: Actually if 30 dollars it a lot to you I would probably wouldn't get either.
