I dont get this really:

It was just a penny, but to Consumers Energy it was enough to cut off power in a local home. Jacqueline Williams, 41, of Flint had an electricity bill of $1,662.08 and paid all of it, except for one cent. That wasn't enough for the power company, which blacked her out for seven hours Wednesday.

The CMS Energy Corp. subsidiary told Williams the power would not be turned on until the penny was received.

"I went down there, paid my penny and got a receipt," Williams told The Flint Journal.

Shortly after, the electricity was turned back on.

"All of this for one penny," said Williams, who went to the state Department of Human Services for help in April and was told the agency would pay most of the bill.

But she was still short more than $500.

Williams, a Social Security recipient, went to the Salvation Army, where she received $430.67, and Consumers agreed to match $430.66 toward the bill.

However, she was still one cent short.

A Consumers Energy spokesman said that the utility had no choice in the matter, though he was not aware of any similar incidents where service was stopped for one cent.

"This was the first one I've heard about," said Terry DeDoes. He said the company has many programs to help people who fall behind in their utility bills.

Williams said she doesn't want to find herself in the same situation again.

"I'm praying to God I stay on top of my bills," she said.

How do you not have the money to pay your bills....and yet have the capacity to rack up $1600+ on your electric bill?

Cmon, only people who grow drugs in their house have a bill that large.

Plus she has used Social Security money (my money), Salvation Army money and "Consumers" (not sure of that one)....

Jeez, cmon lady wtf are you running in your house? A friggen particle accelerator?

ps: ok perhaps she just got behind in payments and they racked up, but again $1600 is alot of electricity AND if they shut her power off for a penny, I would think one months bill overdue would also get it shut off.

somehow I think that if she was growing drugs she'd have the money to pay her electric bill...

The power companies, greedy bastards though they be, don't tend to cut off power if you're late on just one month's bill, so I'd assume this was after a number of unpaid months. And those who have electric heat and larger and/or older homes can tell you that's not an unbelievable bill for that amount of time.

I can attest to that. My sister and her hubby bought a drafty, fairly old home and during their first winter they once had a heating bill over $900 for the month. You can bet they quickly started investing in ways to make the home more efficient. Yikes!

In Los Angeles during the summer months, running air conditioning and heating a pool, I paid upwards of $500 per month for utilities. I could understand how such amounts can add up... with or without a particle accelerator.

Can anyone point me to where it mentions that she's growing drugs in the article?

It doesn't...the OP just assumed that was the only way she could have a power bill that high.
