A woman is standing trial on disorderly conduct charges for laughing during U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions' confirmation hearing.

The trial for Desiree Fairooz, a 61-year-old protester with the group Code Pink, got underway yesterday in D.C. Superior Court after Fairooz declined to accept a plea bargain from prosecutors, who moved forward with the case.

Fairooz laughed after Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., who was introducing Sessions, said the then-junior senator from Alabama's history of "treating all Americans equally under the law is clear and well-documented," according to the Huffington Post. Video shot by a Huffington Post reporter, who said the laugh was not loud enough to be considered disruptive, is being used as evidence in the case.

Prosecutors contend that Fairooz's laugh constituted an attempt to "impede, disrupt, and disturb the orderly conduct" of Sessions' confirmation hearing, the Huffington Post reported.

Code Pink is supporting Fairooz and two other protesters charged with disorderly conduct. The protest group disseminated a statement from Fairooz on Monday.

"I felt it was my responsibility as a citizen to dissent at the confirmation hearing of Senator Jeff Sessions, a man who professes anti-immigrant, anti-LGBT policies, who has voted against several civil rights measures and who jokes about the white supremacist terrorist group the Ku Klux Klan," Fairooz said.

Just curious. How come you omitted the last paragraph of the article?

Fixed it just for you. It doesn't change that the whole notion of taking someone to trial over a laugh is just stupid.

Must be a recent thing, because I don't remember other protestors going to trial.

https://www.rt.com/usa/protesters-brennan-cia-hearing-691/

When protesters continue to speak up after her remarks, Sen. Feinstein ordered the room to be emptied. Moments later, she reconvened the hearing, first ensuring that all demonstrators were barred from the proceedings.

At least one of the protesters was affiliated with Code Pink, an anti-war advocacy group that has been critical of Pres. Obama’s covert overseas drone war. Before pausing the proceedings, Sen. Feinstein ordered, "Code Pink associates be not permitted" back into the hearing room.

Mr. Brennan, who currently serves as counterterrorism adviser under the president, will be sworn in as chief of the CIA pending the results of Thursday’s hearing.

Anti-war activist and author David Swanson told RT that the protesters had a point in their outrage over Brennan's apparent complicity in the drone strikes. Brennan was blocked as Obama's pick for CIA chief in 2009 due his alleged involvement in torture, but today it seems as though he won't face any problems despite his involvement in the American murders of innocent people in numerous drone strikes abroad.

There will be a day when you understand context , does not surprise me you don't seem to know what code pink is
well I understand how you have to swing everything around to fit oboma or Hillary in. you did nothing when adding oboma in but to fill your OCD needs like flipping a switch on and off over and over. just because you tried to stay on topic you slip and off you go OCD wins again.

Her lawyer should push to have the Senate prove the statement made was factual and not a joke.
Hope her lawyer wins.

A woman laughs during Jeff Sessions confirmation hearing.

Jeff Sessions commits perjury during said confirmation hearing.

Woman faces jury trial for laughing.

Makes sense.
Hopefully he and any other of the gang of deplorables who do something wrong, will get their turn someday. Though I don't have much hope. It seems all too often corruption wins, gets overlooked or paid off.

It seems rather ridiculous to charge a women for laughing when Code Pink has done far worse. Charge them for that. Or better, just keep escorting them out as always has been done.
