In a perfect world we would not need guns for protection, but we do not, nor will ever live in such a place. That being said, I'm happy there was a good person with a gun to save people.

Connection here is intermittent. Read it might be fake but I'm gave my trouble verifying it.

The NRA magazines have a monthly page where citizen use of a firearm stopped or prevented a crime. Usually, around eight per month. The news squibs are based on newspaper articles from all around the US. (Sources are named.)

Had a young TV newshen interview me after an IPSC match. "Why are you doing this?" she asked. "We believe you," I answered. She sez, "Huh?" I explained that she and others regularly told us of all the Bad People out there, harming other people. So, we just want to have the skill so we can defend ourselves. Simple choice, really: Who wants to be a helpless victim?

The number of mass shooters stopped by an armed civilian remains vanishingly low.

Probably because my sidearm is for my own protection. If a mass shooting was happening, I wouldn't draw and fire unless I was in immediate danger of being shot myself. I would, instead, work to get out of the area and let the police do their jobs.

That's a totally reasonable and responsible point of view.

However, it runs contrary to a major argument from pro-gun enthusiasts that armed civilians can effectively stop mass shootings.

It's up to you guys to make this argument when some politician or talking head from NRA-ILA says this.

Exactly. That's why the NRA's good guy with a gun is nonsense.

Can someone explain to me just what in the hell is going on in this thread? JK starts it, debunks his own thread, AND there are two extremely sane posts on what to do in a mass shooting situation from gun owners deflake and JK.

    My brain....it hurts.

Never said it wasn't. Also, I am not a member of the NRA. I have considered it since they actively keep the people who want to take them away at bay, but the lack of common sense aspect of the approach makes it hard for me to swallow.

It is occasionally true. Which is why I said "vanishingly small" rather than zero. And, we see that many shooters are thwarted by gun jams, but we'd never build public policy on this instance.

I'd keep my money. The NRA-ILA is full of zealots who would actively torpedo even the smartest bit of gun legislation to achieve their aims.
