Word '08 - Selection / Select All Problem

Hi guys! Just a weird thing I've noticed while working in Word now. I'm working on a small document where I need to select a word or phrase and edit and stylize accordingly. But when I do one action, it affects the whole document. I can usually remedy this by pressing Undo and it just formats what I originally selected. Has anyone else come across this problem? Any fixes as of late? Again, any thoughts or comments will be gladly accepted.
