Worth trading in MBP for 2020 iMac?

I bought a 16 inch MBP at the end of last year. I was torn between that an an iMac but bought the MBP because I was moving, thought it would be easier to transport and take up less space in the new place.

It's a good computer but I've realized I don't like having a laptop as my primary workstation. I miss the size of a desktop and realized I should have bought an iMac to begin with.

Apple would give me $1260 in trade in for my 16 inch MBP (2.6 i7, 512 ssd).

I could then get the middle-tier 27 inch iMac for $739 after trade-in received. I'd get it with 8 GB and upgrade the RAM to 16 myself. That looks to cost about $70 on Amazon, so about $809 coupled with the iMac cost.

Does that sound like a good deal?

If the performance for the macbook is alright for you, and you are only really missing a bigger screen, you should probably just buy a big external display.

You can also likely get more money than hat apple will be paying for it if you sell it to someone else, being it ebay, craigslist or one of the sites that buy used macs. This should make it cheaper to get the imac!

And I want to congratulate you on thinking about the ram upgrade. It's easy to do and much, much cheaper than just getting more ram from the apple store.

Be aware though about how you're doing the Apple trade-in because Apple's trade-in partner, Phobio, has a much less than stellar reputation, and there's many user stories here on MR (and elsewhere) about lowball counteroffers.

Apple announced in May that it would take Mac trade-ins in the stores, and if you're able to go that route, it might be the better, safer, and easier option. If not consider other trade-in companies like cashforyourmac.com or macmeanoffer.com, or even selling it outright on a site like Swappa.com.

Unfortunately the Apple Store here has been closed with no reopening in sight. I'll check the other sites - thanks!
