I have absolutely no desire for a XS since I find it very similar to a X for my uses (mostly Safari, music, and movies, casual camera and gaming). If the next iPhone retains the same design (similar to iPhone 6, 6S, 7, 8), will you stick it out with the X for one more year? I can go as far as to say if it retains the same design 4 years in a row (like iPhone 6 through 8), I will go as far as keeping my X for a 4th year.

With my laptop and iPad both using USB-C I will be very disappointed (and surprised with the way things are going) if the 2019 iPhone doesn’t make the move away from Lightning. I would also love to see a 120hz screen. Design-wise I would love to see something more similar to the new iPads, harkening back to the design of the iPhone 5.

That being said, 2018 was the first year since 2011 that I did not upgrade my iPhone, so I don’t see myself sitting with my X for another year no matter the design or feature set.

I'll be riding out the X until it can't run the new iOS anymore or if I break it. I'm not supporting apple anymore and their price gouging. Keeping my IOS at 12.1 and hoping for a jailbreak that keeps me there for several years.

They should absolutely change the design. The price is too high for the features. At least a new design is something people might pay for but that model will sink the company. They gotta get back to doing what's right.

Apple's hole punch front design won't come until 2020.

Apple is already having trouble asking consumers to upgrade from the 6 and 7 series phones. The somewhat new design in 2020 won't make things any easier.

Why do so many people think redesigning the iPhone for the sake of it will somehow result in a sales surge?

The fact of it is, up until the last couple of years, people upgraded biannually because they’d reach the end of their contract and the tech and features had advanced enough that there was something tangibly new if they upgraded. Now, things have slowed, people aren’t seeing a big difference. They’re deciding that their current iPhone does what they need and they’re opting to switch down to a £13 per month sim-only deal instead. And once they’ve kept a phone for three, or even four years, when their current iPhone dies and they’re offered a new three year contract deal on the latest iPhone with a palatable monthly price, they’ll likely take it.

People, in general, aren’t just going to make an irrational spending decision because “oh look, they brought the flat sides of the iPhone 4 back!” The market has plateaued - until such a time that the next cat is put amongst the pigeons and tech needs a few years to mature again.

The notch will shrink. I predict a teardrop notch ala the OP 6T. Even though the notch isn't a big deal to me, this, along with the other upgrades to the internals, would tempt me if I had an X.

A lot of people just don't buy a new phone every year no matter what design etc changes. I do a 2 year payment plan and will keep a phone for those 2 years - I can't imagine if a new phone had all the features people want buying a new one before the 2 years are up. I know some do but as an X owner I really didn't even look at Xs features. I'll look when 11 comes out.

I suspect much of the world (who aren't MacRumors people) feel the same way.

Apple is targeting atleat a trillion dollars worth of sales for every new design!
Design is not changing in 2019!!

It could be a situation like the iPhone 6 where the 6S, 7, and 8 were kind of similarly.

I don’t think the iPhone X design is outdated tbh compared to androids.

If Apple dumps 3D touch I’ll turn in my X for the XS and keep it for as long as possible... I have no issues with the current design.

The Intel modem bothers me as well as the new antenna design. I don’t remember the last time having an unstable connection... and I’ve traveled a lot throughout Michigan. Also has to do with Verizon’s coverage. I don’t care about 5G. LTE will still be around for years to come. Speed issues aren’t a thing on the Qualcomm X either.

I don’t need 100 Mbps. As long as I am getting at least 10, I’m satisfied.

I only broke my habit of buying a phone every 2 years with the X because I was tired of the size of the 7+ for everyday use. Right now, my hope is to keep the X until at least the 2020 model unless I upgrade to get better T-Mobile support if I change to T-Mobile at some point.

I have the Qualcomm X also and the concerns you listed are part of the reason I didn’t upgrade to the XS..

The XS did not have enough differing features to upgrade over the X.

It wasn’t meant to. That’s why it was an ‘S’ year. I don’t believe the XS was really intended to try to entice 2017 X iPhone owners either to upgrade, the real highlighted iPhone this year was the Max at first, that’s what Apple wanted to offer with the larger display, aside from the separate launch for the XR.

I have a launch day X, so my 2 years won’t be up until November 3, 2019. I wanted to upgrade to the XS Max last year, but decided to keep my X to hold onto my T-Mobile Promo credits for another year. If I upgraded and didn’t pay my phone off I would be out of $804.19 for 1 year and be out of $150 in promo credits, which is stupid. I did upgrade my S2 to the S4. This year even if a few things change on the XS Max, I will upgrade unless the 256GB version is higher than last year’s. Also I think I’m going to wait a month to see if the connection issues for this year’s model make itself known like last year’s XS and XS Max.

I will keep my iPhone X until it gets too slow or can’t run the latest iOS. At this point I’d be perfectly happy with a future model of the same design, because I’m very happy with the X. I bet they will stick with this design for some time. Maybe the notch will be gone by then, but it doesn’t bother me.

Then you will get to save money and use that towards buying apple stock.

Software reeled me into my first iPhone (3GS) more so than design. But each subsequent upgrade was influenced by a larger (yet practical) screen.

& the way it’s going with the 2019 iPhone, software may be impacted (hampered 3D Touch?) with hardware not altering too much, so it’s looking more & more like I’ll hold onto the brilliant X for another year.

Before the X, I was upgrading every 3 years anyway. I cut that to 2 years to get the X as the form factor with no bezels played a big part.

Might wait until the notch goes completely (2020?)...

120hz screen isn’t something that’s a great for a phone really. Not enough to buy an even more expensive screen. Does Samsung or even LG make 120hz panels for OLED ?

I'm not rushing to a decision at this point, but if Apple retains the same pricing for this year's iPhone's, I will certainly keep my Xs for another year. I could have kept my X rather than upgrade to the Xs, but with prices getting outrageous, I really need to stick a two year upgrade cycle instead of upgrading every year.
