Will iPhone 5s be a free 2 year upgrade or will 5s no longer be sold this year you think? I can't see iPhone 6 being a free upgrade already.

I like 5s and I don't want larger phone, mines fine but I'd upgrade if they gave me another free one as back up.

If I full charged iPhone 5s and shut off, how often do you need to recharge it so battery doesn't go bad?

The 5s will most likely be the free upgrade since it is 2 years old now.
Probably will be what I do, put old iPhone in drawer fully charged off and use new one.

Hope they waive my activation charge again this year. Fingers crossed

Is anyone even doing 2 year contracts anymore to get a free phone?

I'm not leaving att. So might as well use my upgrade since I'm on old contracts with unlimited data. Free iPhone/spare 5s seems to be a win otherwise I'm wasting a free upgrade

New phones are too big for comfort.

Gotcha. I wasn't sure if they were doing away with 2 year contracts or how that is working.

Next users pay for their phone but if I get a free phone upgrade or not my bill doesn't change

Hope it stays this way for at least this cycle lol.

Sure, all those folks that "believe" they are getting a "free" phone. NOT! Do the math folks.
If you're still on an older grandfathered contract it is likely cheaper to stick with it than to "upgrade" to a newer plan and your cost doesn't change based on if you get an upgrade or not. So it may not be free as it is built into the cost of the service, but you are paying for it wether you use it or not.

You know it's not free right?

They bind you to another two year contract and the price you pay for your service each month includes an amount that goes towards paying off the phone.

Later when you're out of contract, the price doesn't go down, so you're still paying on that free phone that's already been paid off.

If you're on an unlimited data plan like the OP how much money do you save by not signing a new contract?

I'll give you a hint, the price stays the same, so essentially the phone is free.

Playing devil's advocate here:
I'm "ground to my wife, but that's not a bad thing if I have no intention of leaving. It's mutually beneficial.

Also, I can't speak for ATT, but VZW does in fact go down when you fulfill your contract--$15 per line.

I guess Sprint was pretty different then. Our bill never went down even when a year, year and a half out of contract. We're on a lease now though so I am paying the full price of the phone over time. Once the lease is done if I keep going and pay the last bit off I get to keep the phone. Then my bill goes down because the lease will be complete.

Lastly, my argument isn't over loyalty. We've been with Sprint for 16 years and my wife and I will have 18 years together in November.

If I truly wanted to get off Sprint I would. My iPhone 6+ is fully unlocked because Sprint screwed up.

Here's some math using VZW's 3GB options:

1. 3GB Share Everything

  • 3GB - $50
  • 2 lines - $80
  • $130/mo. = $3,120 (over 24 mo.'s)
  • 2 iPhone 5C's "$0"
  • TOTAL COST = $3,120
2. The Verizon Plan
  • 3GB - $50
  • 2 lines - $40
  • $90/mo. = $2,160 (over 24 mo.'s)
  • 2 iPhone 5C's - $981 ($450 each)
  • TOTAL COST = $3,060

All this fuss about people being bad at math and stupid and "No such THANG as a free phone, grrrrr!" over $60?!?!?

Am I missing something here?

Congrats on the 18 years, by the way. That's awesome.

That's how most US carriers are, they never used to let the bill go down even if you didn't take the subsidized phone. Now though they are starting to shift to the model that is more common in the rest of the world of separating out the price of the phone and the cost of service so the cost goes down once you no longer have a subsidized phone.

I don't understand

My bill is 72-75 a month or so. Unlimited data, unlimited text, 450 mins. 25% fan code

I've used 12gb this month alone( unthrottled) and I typically run 6gb monthly.

If I upgrade it will stay the same as if I don't upgrade price per month correct?

The next plan, new plans. The bill goes up when you get a phone. And with as much data as I use I know id probably be paying a lot.

With the unlimited plan you're a lot better off keeping it if you use that much data. And on your plan the price will stay the same if you upgrade or if you don't.
