Hi,

I'm looking for an FPS shooter.

The following are my specs:

Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
Memory: 8 GB
Chipset Model: ATI Radeon HD 4850
Type: GPU
Bus: PCIe
PCIe Lane Width: x16
VRAM (Total): 512 MB
Resolution: 2560 x 1440

Preferably something not outdated or 'opensource'.

Edit: I already got TF2 and CS:S installed.

Call of Duty 4 will run well on your system. It's my favorite FPS on the Mac.

There's BioShock. And also Doom 3--the graphics hold up really well even after all these years.

Thanks man.

Didn't know there was an official COD4 for the Mac.

Downloading it.

Another other titles you recommend?

Unreal Tournament 2003 or 2004, fast paced arena combat. You'll find 2k4 servers online. The game fills out teams with bots, and it has a solo ladder. Good luck finding a Mac version of 2003. For the Mac version the only caveat is I don't know how well they run on 10.6. Amazon has used Mac copies of 2k4 going for about $25. In bootcamp, both games pc versions, run fine in both XP and Vista.

Half-life 2 is still an excellent FPS, and your setup should run it just fine with most settings at max.

Is it still full price? Last time I checked it was ... and in general has crappy DRM.

Unless you're pirating, but I will go ahead and assume that you aren't.

Have you taken a look at Sauerbraten?

Sauerbraten is a cross-platform (primarily) online FPS. The graphics aren't as good as say COD or some other FPS, but the action is very good. Plus it's open source and FREE. It's worth at least downloading and trying it.

I'm playing it on a 2008 2.8GHz iMac with 4GB RAM and getting 100 - 125 FPS easily.

End of what story? Are you insinuating that one non-single player, non-story based shooter is remotely enough for everyone?

Then you are wrong ... and THAT is the end of the story :D

Agree. I generally play single player games. My aging reflexes are no match for youngsters that spend hours online.

Enter game... Bang! I'm dead. :D

Quake Live, its free, and awesome.

That is if you are running windows XP/Vista. (7 not mentioned but I assume it's ok.) See this compatibility link. Mac support being developed.

So Quake Live plays in your browser window? How does it play and how important is your computer hardware? There was a story about playing games via browser that it would take away the need to constantly upgrade hardware. I wonder how true that is?
