We adopted him from a shelter. He was abused, but he's livin' the good life now. Buddy is little high strung, but overall he's a great dog. We've also adopted a retired racing greyhound named Nitro, and they both get along pretty well.

She's older now, this was taken nearly 5 years ago. She has to wear a muzzle normally but because of her temperament, it's because she can't be trusted not to eat plums when she's around and about on her own. The plum stones collect in her stomach and she gets seriously, vet bill sick. Her best friend is a Golden Retriever called Daisy.

I sure do, now that I'm home. I didn't have any on my PC at work. Yes indeed, they are family, and they're both real happy to see me when I get home. And the feeling is mutual! Thanks, and have a great holiday!

You are so right - Boxers Rule !!!! I wish I knew how to post pictures here- I have a 4 yr.old boxer that we rescued... He was abused & now has a few "issues"- lol... like growling, he's so spoiled now though that when he growls, he's licking you ferociously at the same time...lol... His name is "Mooch"... This dog had such an impact on me that it made me want a Boxer Puppy too... So now I have Buford (4 months) & Mooch (4 yrs. old)... I consider myself so lucky to have 2 boxers- greatest dogs in the world...

Funny thing is that I was never really a dog person-- we always had a couple (of varying breeds) because my wife & kids love them, but I never really loved any other breed like I do the Boxer- Boxers are special- I never see myself living without a couple running around...

i do have to say that Labs are way cool... before I got Mooch I had a black Lab & he was cool as hell- I don't think I really enjoyed him as much as I could have because before Mooch dogs were more for the kids to play with than me, but he was a good one- a lot of energy though...lol...

Boxers and Schnauzers are my favorite! Our Standard Schnauzer's name is Gusti (feminine form of Gustav).

Schnauzers don't hold still though, so forgive the photos. I had to catch her and hold her when she was a puppy or I'd never get a shot.

I thought picking out a dog was going to be tough. I was at Camp BowWow in the Detroit area and they were fostering a black lab mix. I fostered her for a weekend and she just did not leave my side. She is a year and three months and soooo chill. I cannot say how lucky I am to have her!!

Camp BowWow is a Camp for dogs, they give your dog more than just a kennel while you're away.

I've always wanted a lab but she doesn't want a "big" dog. That being said, I don't want a little ankle-biter either, so we would need something inbetween. One of her reasons for not wanting a dog is that she doesn't like hair all over the place, so the less shedding the better. Also, she doesn't appreciate the leg-humping so that probably regulates it to being a female. She does love the idea of having a puppy from the beginning if we get one though, so that probably means that the animal shelter wouldn't be a great idea for her.

Have any suggestions for a breed?

Lab mixes usually turn out alright...

Go to petfinder.com and check what type of mixes they have.

Mine is a black lab, greyhound mix. Has the build of a greyhound and the face of a lab. Thankfully, I run alot and I have a big yard to keep her active.

Cheers.

Is that Cavalier King Charles Spaniel? I have one myself. I think he's just about 10 years old now. He's named Chipper. A few years after we got ours, at least three other people we know got them. I think we started a fad... Anyway, they are great dogs.

This is Chewey (short for Chewbaca) a flat-coated lab/chow mix. He will be three years old next month. He is the best dog on earth IMO (though I may be biased - though most at the Dog Park and Doggy Daycare seem to feel the same - proud papa here).

I think that a good place to start would be the American Kennel Club site. Please don't go to a pet store. The best place to get a puppy is from a breeder. They care about there breed and so will get a happier and healther puppy.

It is indeed! They are fantastic dogs! He stays with my friend (who also has King Charles spaniels, six of them) when Iím away ... they all have their own personalities ... its very strange. Sam is very loving, very smart as well.
He slept in the utility room for the first 3 months we had him but he'd bark and cry all night long so we had to let him sleep on our bed, as you can see! (the little scamp)

His hair is a NIGHTMARE when its long. The standard is that this breed has hair to the ground but it mats up to much so we keep it about 3 inches long.

Always check every shelter in your area before you even think about buying a buying a dog. We adopted our dog, not from a shelter but the Jungle, because there are no shelters here. A healthy Mutt might never learn many commands, but they'll love you more than most pure-breeds.. Of course, there are plenty of pure-breeds in the shelters as well.

Simple Economics: Supply and Demand

Why do shelters exist? For a very simple reason: too many animals and not enough dedicated owners with loving homes. Yet every new dog that is purchased from a breeder or pet store stimulates new supply. "Supply" and "demand" are out of sync.

Here is Dottie (get it). We have had her longer than any of our children (the oldest is 8.5).
She is everything opposite of what people say about Dals (yes we got her before the 101 dalmations movie). The absolute sweetest dog in the world except one thing-she often hates other dogs.
She also has the smile that scares the devil out of people-some think she is about to bite-but she has big teethy smile and snorts when you come home-it is wonderful. This is an older picture with our middle child Christina.

edit: she snores something awful, and boy can she clear a room when she pass es wind. :p But she will cry in the house if she hears one of my daughters crying 3 houses away, and she loves our children-and they of course think she is awesome.

My neighbors rotweiler, honestly, its the nicest dog I've ever seen

A friend's family had a rottweiler, and I swear it was the most well-adjusted and social dog I had seen until I got my boxer. I guess I shouldn't be surprised since I think boxers and rotts have similar lineage. I think the difference is that the Rottweiler feels more loyalty to friends and family, thus having reactions to strangers that some may (mis-)construe as aggression.

Funniest thing, I took my boxer puppy to his first obedience class yesterday. All of the puppies in the class are timid and not social (or "sweet" as the owners called them). Everyone was shocked at Gatsby, who loves anything that breathes. He was jumping up and down, whole backend wagging and doing all of the boxer dances that their owners love. One couple tried to say that we had an aggressive dog (wtf? no growling or attacking or dominance attempts = aggressive?) when the instructor flat out told them they were idiots, and that they'd better introduce their cowering Border Collie to him in hopes that they could socialize their puppy and make it less nervous.

I guess the point that I was trying to make in that pointless story is that anyone considering getting a dog should look into it and read a little. Learn to recognize unhealthy forms of aggression and submission and what you can do about it. Take the time to socialize your puppy starting at about 3-4 months old (after your major shot panels). It makes your experience with them so much more fulfilling. Oh yeah, and don't trust regular people who give their .02 on training a dog. If you wouldn't trust them with your child, don't even surmise that they know anything about a puppy (unless they are an experienced breeder or a professional who has been working with dogs a LONG time).

Thank you for your kind words, rickvanr.

A job well done on your family album, clayjohanson. At least I consider our dogs part of the family.

my dog loves the snow too, but I didn't bring my camera home this weekend to take pictures of it. Here's a nice shot I took in my apartment, her eyes are green because of the flash. Normally, they're brown.
