For the latest music, see the Free iTunes 2006 thread.

Here, from most recent to least recent, is a list of tunes in the iTunes Music Store that were free downloads in 2005. Bold marks tunes that appear to be free indefinitely. Apple generally issues new free music on Tuesdays, when I check for it and update this list. Please post to this thread if you spot other free tunes. Links to the newest free iTunes can usually be found in the bottom right corner of the iTMS home page. When a song is newly offered, the last link on the line below works best. For songs from past weeks or months, the first link is typically better. For abbreviations used here, see post below.

So did Apple make a New Year's resolution not to do discovery downloads anymore?

Doctor Q

It appears it was a Hanukkah, Christmas, or Kwanzaa resolution instead. None last week either. Anybody who finds one should let us know.

This is something I have been wondering about - the iTunes Canada store does not offer the FREE DOWNLOAD OF THE WEEK.

Does anyone know why they do not offer this? Is this a legal issue or an Apple issue?

It wasn't there straight after launch in the UK either. Took a few months - presumably until the record companies figured out that pushing an unknown-ish artist this way was a good thing.

They have a different one in the UK this week although I had to get to it from the iTunes New Music Tuesday email rather than from the home page which was still showing last week. Can't remember who it was - just that they were from Sheffield.

The free downloads are a good idea, and sometimes I get them, but it's often too much trouble to sign into iTMS, put in a fake US address, download the song, then sign into ADC and put my real address back in  :D

Actually, now that my ADC subscription has expired, I guess I can leave the US address in there.

The Sampler includes three tunes that were previously available as Discovery Downloads, including "All At Sea", which was the very first Discovery Download last year.

Oddly, every song is shown in the Sampler as genre "Pop", and they will come out in your library as Pop, even though they are of mixed genres and are shown correctly elsewhere in the iTunes Music Store. I put the correct genres in the list above.

How long have the "Out of the Box" and "Catch of the Week" free downloads been going on? I use the iTunes free songs iMix and never saw them. (Then again, that iMix also missed the Vol. 2 Mixtape.) Are those new for the first time this week? Seems like they will be weekly now.

BTW, that Girlfight link doesn't work. But search for Girlfight in iTunes and you'll quickly see the free song.

Anyway, 4 free songs today--and that's even WITHOUT a DD showing up :)

I bet other free songs, given away by labels for various small promotions, are all over the store from time to time if you happen across them.

That's why I put "[home page]" or "[genre=New Age page]" after the description, to give people another way to get to it. I had hoped that the URLs I capture would work eventually even if they don't work initially, but some of them never seem to work. Giving the URL and the path, if I know it, is all I can offer.

To help people who have been collecting Apple's free tunes, I wrote an AppleScript to fix the bad genre settings in the tunes that Apple gave away in the two Samplers so far:iTunes New Music Sampler (Universal Motown Edition) (13 songs)

iTunes New Music Sampler (Atlantic/Lava Edition) (16 songs)See the beginning of this thread for the links.

These collections are distributed with all of the songs set to genre "Pop", when in fact they cover Alternative, Electronic, Hip Hop/Rap, Jazz, Pop, R&B/Soul, Rock, and Soundtrack, as you can see in the iTunes Music Store if you search for the songs in other albums.

The AppleScript looks for the two sampler albums in your iTunes library. For whichever are found, it looks for the songs known to be in those albums and checks their genres against the correct genres as shown at the beginning of this thread. For any that are set to a different genre (e.g., still set to "Pop"), the genre is corrected. The AppleScript shows you which ones it changed.

Rather than give you a compiled application and ask you to run it sight unseen, I prefer to "publish" the source code here, in the following post. Mac OS X comes with "Script Editor", an application that will run the AppleScript for you.

Instructions for using the AppleScript appear above it in the next post.

If Apple posts more iTunes Samplers or other tunes with the wrong genres, I will update the script to cover them too, for no extra charge.

Who wants to be a guinea pig and try it out?

Genre notes:The song When I'm Gone (Sadie) by No Address is not elsewhere in the Music Store, so I classified it myself as "Rock".

The song Funny Little Feeling by Rock 'n' Roll Soldiers is classified elsewhere in the iTunes Music Store as "Soundtrack", so the AppleScript sets it that way, but you might find it more useful to set its genre to "Alternative" afterward if you search your songs by genre or store them in smart playlists that way and don't want Soundtracks to be in their own group.

Doctor Q

The AppleScript below corrects genres in the free iTunes Sampler albums in your iTunes library. It is for personal use by MacRumors members.

To use this script:
If you have not already done so, download one or more "iTunes Samplers" from the iTunes Music Store. See the beginning of this thread for the links.
Copy all text in this post, starting with the --copy me-- line and ending with the --stop copying me-- line, to the clipboard.
Open Applications/AppleScript/Script Editor.
In the empty Script Editor window, paste the script from the clipboard.
Optional: Click the Compile icon. The AppleScript will be displayed with proper formatting.
Click the Run icon. The AppleScript will be executed.
Reply to the prompts.
Quit Script Editor without saving the script.
If you have another Mac, repeat these instructions.

--copy me--
-- Fix Genres (AppleScript)
-- Author: Doctor Q, MacRumors.com
-- Version: 1.0, February 2005
-- Format: Distributed as AppleScript source code.
-- Availabilty: Free to MacRumors forum members. Not to be further distributed.
-- Warranty: None. Use at your own risk.

-- The purpose of this AppleScript is to correct the genre settings for the free "iTunes Sampler" albums in the iTunes Music Store.
-- As offered by Apple, these Samplers have had the genre for all tunes mistakenly set to "Pop".
-- Fix Genres version 1.0 covers these iTunes Samplers:
-- 1. iTunes New Music Sampler (Universal Motown Edition)
-- 2. iTunes New Music Sampler (Atlantic/Lava Edition)
-- It is OK to run the script multiple times and to Quit at any time.

-- General cautions:
-- You should not run programs or scripts without some assurance that they are safe.
-- Consider the source and/or examine the source code yourself before using a program or script that you download from the Internet.
-- You should routinely back up your iTunes library, and it is also wise to back it up before running programs that can affect it.

Go ahead. Post anything you find. And I can collect what you find, put them in the second post, and take all the credit.

I'll take and post in the thread as I see them, also will do some searching and post results here in the next week or so.

I for one am not concerned about credit here, if you would prefer I can send you an MR email with the listings....

I just love this resource!

I just noticed another new FREE song in iTMS (USA), the song is "Save Me" off the album "Here's to the Mourning" by Unwritten Law (Genre = Rock).

I don't know how to make that a link yet. Or to put in a link to that.

The category of this free tune is called "Catch of the Day" from Carson Daly's Most Requested.

I checked the free iTunes list in the first post of this thread against the iMixes of free tunes that I know of, to see if I missed any free tunes and if those lists are equally up to date.

Here's what I found:

Combining last year and this year, the MacRumors lists have 132 tunes, consisting of47 free tunes from 2004
32 Discovery Downloads from 2004
2 Street Official Mixtapes from 2004
1 audiobook from 2004
17 free tunes from 2005
29 free tunes from iTunes Samplers from 2005
2 Street Official Mixtapes from 2005
2 audiobook from 2005
The iTunes FREE Songs Up to Date (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPublishedPlaylist?id=47821) iMix:This is the best other collection. It has 92 tunes. It is missing 39 tunes compared with our lists:

Around the Sun Redux by R.E.M. from 2004
Every Ship Must Sail Away by Blue Merle from 2005
Gotta Get Up from Here by Ellie Lawson from 2005
Gotta Get Up from Here (Radio Edit) by Ellie Lawson from 2005
the iTunes Samplers
the Street Official Mixtapes
the audiobooks
The iTunes Free Songs (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPublishedPlaylist?id=57784) iMix:This is almost the same as the iTunes FREE Songs Up to Date iMix, but is missing 3 more tunes. It has 89 tunes. It is missing 42 tunes compared with our lists:

Around the Sun Redux by R.E.M. from 2004
Based On a True Story (Mama Told Me) by Ms. Triniti from 2004
Club Foot by Kasabian from 2005
Every Ship Must Sail Away by Blue Merle from 2005
Gotta Get Up from Here by Ellie Lawson from 2005
Gotta Get Up from Here (Radio Edit) by Ellie Lawson from 2005
Save Me by Unwritten Law from 2005
the iTunes Samplers
the Street Official Mixtapes
the audiobooks

"Club Foot" and "Save Me" will no doubt be added soon, since they are the two latest free tunes; the list simply wasn't updated promptly. Normally, it is only missing 1 tune compared with the iTunes FREE Songs Up to Date iMix.
The FREE Music Downloads (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPublishedPlaylist?id=196629) iMix:It has not been kept up to date. It has only 56 songs, missing 76 compared to our lists.

The This Week's FREE Music in 1 iMix! (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPublishedPlaylist?id=213854) iMix:This list shows only the most recent free songs, and it currently shows only 3. It does not include some tunes that are currently free, such as Save Me by Unwritten Law (the latest one), the iTunes Samplers, the Street Official Mixtapes, or the audiobooks.

It looks like our list is still the best source!

Apple had a little trouble with spelling this week. The front page of the iTunes Music Store lists "Lokua Kanze" under Free Downloads. The actual artist name is "Lokua Kanza". Whoever at Apple typed the wrong vowel should have his or her iMac replaced with an eMac!

When my iTunes Music Store came up it said that the single cost is $0.99.This often happens. It shows the price in the iTMS display when it is actually free.

Here's how to get it if it is free and not accidentally buy it:

1. Set the "Store" section of your iTunes preferences to "Buy using a Shopping Cart".

2. Click the ADD SONG button next to the song, even though it says $0.99. Because of your preference setting, this won't buy the song and charge you money. It will only add it to your shopping cart.

3. Open your Shopping Cart (in the Source directory on the left side of your iTunes window).

4. If the song is really free, it will say GET SONG next to the song. Click it and you'll download the free song. If it says BUY SONG next to the song, don't click it. Check back later (it might say GET SONG in your shopping cart later). If it never becomes free, remove it from your shopping cart by selecting it and pressing delete.

Well I know that the 9-11 Commission Reports were offered, as well as both the DNC and RNC convention speeches.I found them (45 separate audiobooks!) and added them to the 2004 free tunes chart (first two posts), since they are still available free in the store.

The latest was the 2005 State of the Union.I added that one to this year's chart when you mentioned it. Let me know if you find others.

Thanks, didn't have as much time as I thought I would recently.

Here are some more from 2004:

RNC convention, just search the term RNC - 21 books

DNC convention, just search the term DNC - 22 books

Presidential debates (including vice presidential), search the term Presidential Debate - 4 books

The 2005 State of the Union is no longer free.

Thanks, Chip NoVaMac. I found the 4 debates, 26 DNC freebies, and 21 RNC freebies. Oddly, there is a 22nd RNC audiobook, which is 95 cents.

And I still see the 2005 State of the Union as free.

In any case, the 2004 thread is updated with them all (97 audiobooks), and we can concentrate on 2005.

Here is a link to a site that has them all. http://www.sexy-admin.de/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=viewsdownload&sid=10

If you look carefully at the page you will see that it does have links to .zip files. They are in the place that says: File is not available for the time being. Please, use the torrent file! But they are there, as .zip files. Or you can grab them as Torrents. Either way, I got them all including covers.

An interesting glitch in the iTunes Music Store this week: If you click one of the Free Downloads links on the home page, you go to the proper page. But if you control-click, select Copy iTunes Music Store URL, and paste that URL (e.g., http://ax.phobos.apple.com.edgesuite.net/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=49642206) into Safari, it displays the content retrieved in Safari rather than invoking iTunes. well not only is it technically illegal it wont work

the expired freebees will only work on the computer(s) for which the person who 'purchased' them has authorized so if someone sent you to them they still have the DRM and will not work on your machine unless that person authorizes you to use 'em

You guys are correct. After their expiration dates, free tunes are just like other purchased tunes, and subject to the same agreement rules and technical limitations.

The weekly free songs are no longer free after about 8 days (longer for Street Official Mixtapes), but for some reason tune #24 in the list, (Bright Eyes - When the President Talks to God) has remained free since it was first added in January. The iTunes Music Samplers are also free, so that means there are 33 free tunes available as of today.

And some old audiobooks, even from last year, are still free.

Doctor Q

This selection was supposed to be available 1/11/05. I kept getting "not available at this time" messages until the next morning. I downloaded it 1/12/05 along with the Discovery Tune "Disappear." It was available before 1/17/05 as quoted from above.
Just thought you might want to know, for accuracy sake. Thanks for the details. I haven't been compulsive about determining the date-first-available (often late Monday depending on time zone, but sometimes not until Wednesday), so they are based on Apple's "free tune Tuesday" intended release dates.

If I had the time, I could put in bold the tunes that are actually free at any given time, so you'd see 33 of them in bold right now, but I'd have to check daily instead of weekly and I might wear out my computer.

I have noticed that so far this year they have released 2 "New music Samplers" that contained like 16 songs each. There was 1 in Jan and 1 in Feb but since then they have not had any. Is there any regularity to these kinds of deals or are they just random?

Is there any regularity to these kinds of deals or are they just random?Your guess is as good as mine. It certainly looked like a pattern, with the first two samplers each coming out on the Friday closest to the 10th of the month in January and February. So I expected to see a third one March 11th, but nothing was released, as far as I know. Keep in mind, however, that the samplers are not linked to from the main page in the iTunes Music Store, so I rely on forum members to report when one comes out.

Another mystery: Why don't the "Catch of the Week" songs come out weekly?

At least the Street Official Mixtapes have a fairly regular pattern:Volume 1: Tue Nov 02
Volume 2: Tue Dec 07
Volume 3: Tue Jan 11
Volume 4: Fri Feb 11
Volume 5: Tue Mar 15
Volume 6: Tue Apr 05

As of today, there are still only the two samplers. You can get to the 'new iPod' page here (ax.phobos.apple.com.edgesuite.net/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/newIPodUser?newIPodUser=true&originStoreFront=143441).

I shop at several Apple Stores in various cities near us, and I noticed that they all have the same playlist on the iPods every time. This playlist also appears on the iTunes programs on the displays Macs. Does anyone have a list of these songs? I am just curious what these songs are (I remember Alan Jackson's 5 O'clock Somewhere, and an Alison Krauss song, etc.).

Where can we get a list of these songs?

Thanks very much, if you have any information. This is probably the wrong forum for this, but all of us love iTunes very much, and I thought someone might know.

Go to iTMS and click iMix, on the left side menu, then type in "Apple Store" or something similar in the iMix search field, which is different than the Music Store search field.

I just did that and the search returned twenty-two iMixes referencing "Apple Store." So I think you have a good chance of finding what you want in an iMix on the iTunes Music Store. Plus you can preview listen to the songs from the iMix! Really cool.

Well, the free song on the UK iTMS surprised me this week - Silicone Soul's 'Burning Sands'. They're signed to a small independent Scottish label, Soma Records, for whom I do tech support & develop their website (where you can buy MP3s & FLACs (http://www.somarecords.com/shop/music/soma_cd41/) </plug>). I've often jokingly said they should get something on the front page, but never quite thought they would manage it.

I'll be interested to see the sales figures for it - how much a difference being on the front page actually makes.

"All at Sea" - Universal Motown Sampler

"Gotta Get Up from Here" - Atlantic/Lava Sampler

"Jus Anotha Shorty" - Universal Motown Sampler

"Sleeping With the Lights On" - Universal Motown Sampler

Clues show that today's free Back 2 Basics album will stay free and is not a weekly-only freebie. If you are interested in it, download it, but you probably don't need to hurry since it will probably remain free even after next Tuesday's Single of the Week and Discovery Download replace this week's pair.

I have added the tag [PERM] to tunes that, as far as I can tell, are permanently free, not just free for a week. There are three I've identified so far, including "Never Gone (Album Sampler)" added today.

My primary clues are:

1. Not getting the message "The item you've added to your shopping cart is free for a limited time so download it at your earliest convenience" when iTunes is set to use a shopping cart.

2. The word "Sampler" in the title (not always indicative). If a third iTunes Music Sampler is released, I don't know if the second iTunes Music Sampler will stop being free.

3. Any reason Apple might want to promote a tune, which is probably why "Demon Days" is still free, to promote the Gorillaz videos.

Good spot! This week's tracks are
1. Martin Grech: Father and Mother Figure This 22-year-old from
Aylesbury released his second album, Unholy, last month. Recorded shortly
before Unholy's release, Father and Mother Figure features Grech's trademark anguished vocals.

2. Tom Vek Live from London: I Ain't Saying My Goodbyes Vek makes
smart electro pop with a copper bottom base. I Ain't Saying My
Goodbyes is a live favourite and showcases Vek's way with a tune.

3. The Faders: Jump (Live) This gritty girl band is tipped for big
things. Jump, a rousing anthem, is evidence of their potential; it's
catchy as hell with shedloads of attitude.

4. Frank Popp Ensemble: The Catwalk (Instrumental) Popp is a German
DJ who is in love with Stax, Motown and modern house. The Catwalk takes
Green Onions and coats it with 21st-century sparkle.

5. Lucie Silvas: The Longer We're Apart (Live on Parkinson)
Silvas is easy on the eye, but she's much more than that. She has a fine
set of lungs which she shows off to great effect on this out-take from
her Parkinson appearance.

I changed the posts at the beginning of this thread to use bold to mark the tunes that are permanently free (or at least free since they were released). The tunes at the very top, for the current week, are always free, of course, but this will make it easy to go back and pick up older tunes that are still available.

I also re-sorted so the Volvo tunes (which I added only recently) are in their proper sequence by date.

The Wonder Stuff
Was I Meant to be Sorry?. Size of a Cow was immensely likeable. Can the reformed rockers do it again?

Black Velvets
The Glamstar, This Liverpool outfit are graduates of the Rolling Stones School - of music and hair

Lisa Miskovsky
Lady Stardust, She has uniquely been described as the solo female equivalent of the Eagles

Joy Zipper
Thoughts a waste of time, This My Bloody Valentine-style rock is a palatable matter of promise fulfilled

Stephen Fretwell
Run, The promising singer-songwriter's Dylan-flecked debut record has
hooked many fans already

Fretwell will be the next 'Live in London' gig on August 2 incidentally.

The free audiobook for the day is Lemony Snicket, A Bad Beginning (A Series of Unfortunate Events) narrated by Tim CurryMaster

EDIT - Can anyone get any of these working? The audiobook one is taking me to a standard home page (going in 'logged out' gets me to last week's download).
