View Full Version : The Really Crap-o-rific PC Photo Thread

Whuddya think? Would it be fun to have a thread dedicated to pictures of some of the most horrid-looking PC designs out there?

I got the idea from one of those Google ads at the top of the page that was advertising a "PC Cube". Anticipating some sort of horrible rip-off of the Apple Cube design, I clicked on the link. I was not disappointed:

http://www.cappuccinopc.com/Media/images/cubepc/sb61.jpg

All I can say about this is.....BWAH-ha-ha-ha-ha! :p

For the morbidly curious, it's from here (http://www.cappuccinopc.com/cubesb61.asp).

So...y'all seen any bad PC designs you wanna share?

Whuddya think?Looks like a cross between the Shuttle SB and SN XPC range... one of the more reasonable - scratch - probably the best small-form factor designers of the PC world. It may even be a Shuttle, I've not looked through their catalogue for about a year.

Believe me Mr. Veil, there are much worse than this!

I agree... this is one of the best SFF PC cases I've seen. I'd rather have that case than the large tower I have now. It'd fit in better with the rest of the Apple stuff I have.

It's not bad, especially with ports out front. I'm tired of fishing around the back of my machine to connect something. ;)

It could have been a really bad case like these guys sell: http://www.cheapguys.com/

Those are just scary.

Thomas Veil
Feb 16, 2005, 01:16 PM
Must be a matter of taste, I guess. When I hear "Cube", I of course think of something a little more subtle, like this:

http://www.theregister.co.uk/media/104.jpg

And if that's someone's idea of a PC version...I dunno, I'm just not impressed.

Believe me Mr. Veil, there are much worse than this!Well, as someone once said...bring 'em on! :D

I don't like those circles on those drive drawers, looks tacky. They could have made the drive drawers blend in better with the case, that would have made it look for slick rather just just put there.

Nermal
Feb 16, 2005, 03:08 PM
My brother has one of those. The panels aren't drive drawers, you actually remove the panel and put a drive there instead.

That's the front?!?! I hate to think how ugly the back looks! The ports being easily accessible is good though. I was just thinking today how annoying it must be to attach the Shuffle to a Mac mini since you'd really need a USB hub to avoid having to move it. The big iPods are less of a problem since having a firewire cable attached and tucked round the edge is less of a hassle

I honestly do understand the point of this thread, and looks and style did play a big part in my iBook decision, but I dunno. As far as PCs go, this one is actually pretty innovative and good looking. And it even has FW. Oooh la la! :p If it actually uses the wireless KB and mouse as shown, and the factory installed RF option for them (awww, no BT?) doesn't involve some kind of transceiver on a cord that has to sit on the desktop, but is integrated into the CPU unit, then I would put it pretty high up on the list of good looking PCs by any manufacturer (although natch not in Apple or Sony territory). Of course the LCD resolution would have to be more than 1024x768 too... Well, anyway, the *looks* aren't bad if its used wirelessly.

This is an odd design, to say the least. What I like most about it is that it's innovative. What I like least is that the monitor angle can't be adjusted.

It can! Using that adjustable foot at the very back. Probably gives you a good 3-4 degrees of freedom. ;)

I didn't even notice the foot. Well, that's better than no adjustment at all, but it still doesn't come close to what the iMac G5 offers for adjustment options. The iMac G4 is even more flexible.

Real wood would probably not be good as a computer case because it does not dissipate heat and static as well as metal. Let alone, the warpage that could occur with temperature humidity changes.

i daresay my pc case probably belongs in this thread...with its entire-front-of-the-case-is-the-power-led-ness and the green fan on the side. it looks even more tacky with the red OTES fans on the mothboard :o and the UV cathodes :o
but i kinda like it.

heheh. someone might as well just build a computer into a refrigerator that cools not only your computer but some drinks as well (i'm sure it's been done). i always liked the one that had a coffee maker built in. i definitely enjoy the idea of a PC mod with random kitchen appliance built in. i mean if computers are getting so hot, might as well use that heat to make some toast. or make smoothies. or something. It'll be the only way to keep the Mactels cool, at this rate

There is a dell worse than that picture, the dells at my school. On most of them the round dell logos are broken off and stolen and the front doors are busted off, one computer has FOOD  on the inside of it (a bottle of coke and some doritos) the teacher still doesnt notice the funny smell coming from it.
Man, i should bring my camera one day.

I don't think it's all that bad, it even looks to be about the size of a new iMac. I just think that big beefy stand is a bit much for such a small computer... I mean, it... oh, wait... the stand IS the computer. The iMac-sized monitor is just a... monitor. Eeek! ;)

I think the problem with all of these PCs is that they LOOK cheap. Even when they're decently designed, they're not made out of quality material.

Looks like a cross between the Shuttle SB and SN XPC range... one of the more reasonable - scratch - probably the best small-form factor designers of the PC world. It may even be a Shuttle, I've not looked through their catalogue for about a year.

Believe me Mr. Veil, there are much worse than this!

Hey our school bought all the teachers new Shuttle XPC's this year and for a PC it rocks. It looks nice and takes up very little space. I have a 17" LCD and I can tuck the little XPC away. It has very accessible ports on the front of it. Our Tech Coordinator found they are pretty easy to work on and upgrade as well. I think it is a pretty decent PC. I like Macs more then PC's, but if the school is going to buy me one, I am not going to bash it.

We also are slowly converting all of our labs to Shuttle's. They save a lot of space over big towers and they are pretty decent to work on.

This is what they got us and he installed CDRW/DVD/R drives and card readers in the front slots. Pretty much let us select the drive options we wanted. Mine has a 2.8Ghz P4 with 1GB of RAM. Not bad considering they used to have old Gateway towers with 900Mhz Celerons in them.

Okay, you can joke PCs all you want but I draw the line at messing the the Commodore 64. There's nothing like saving data to a cassette tape and a 100 baud rate external modem. If you were cool you had the grunting 5.25 floppy that tended to ... overheat, believe it or not. And for entertainment ... you'd dial up some BBS number and search around on someone elses Commodore for games. Oh this was a case thread. Well, here's my submission:

http://www.cooltechzone.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=1520&Itemid=0

I don't think PC users get the idea of sophisticated design. They take function over form to a whole new level and even then can't seem to get it right. This is a classic in the making. I'm thinking of setting one up myself. Please detect the sarcasm in my tone.

LOL, I had a commedore 64 I was little and the only thing I could remember is playing digdig and freaking out when the 5.25 inch drive started smoking. Oh and I also rember the cassette tapes, took like 5 mins to load a game. I loved the commedore.

The Million Dollar PC looks like crap....

http://common.ziffdavisinternet.com/util_get_image/15/0,1425,sz=1&i=150108,00.jpg

The J PC runs a Core 2 Duo or Athlon 64 FX, Windows Vista Ultimate, 8GB of DRAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8800GTX 768MB of RAM, 2TB of 7,200 SATA storage, Blu-ray or HD DVD drive and plenty more trimmings like a 7-inch built-in screen, TV tuner and 7.1-channel sound. No word on HDTV tuners, which could be a bit of a deal breaker for anyone with the kind of cash to burn to buy a million dollar media PC. Moneual also has a few "low end" models running for $30k each in an 100 PC limited run: the Baroque 18k gold PC, the Renaissance white and yellow gold PC, and the Rococo, with white and yellow gold -- all of 'em naturally encrusted jewels galore. We can't even drop our usual "well, someone will buy it" line for this one, thanks to the outlandish prices and unimpressive devices, but we fear the worst.
