Well it would seem that I've gained some kind of 'supernatural' power that helps nudge crap bands in the splitting up direction... :D
Right then... Green Day next please... :p

Not from this angle, I thought U2 lost it somewhere between Unforgettable Fire and The Joshua Tree...
Although Beautiful Day is a monstrously good track.
Gav, could you start promoting Linkin Park please?

Well apart from the fact that they're all crap  :p :p Busted were just an even more watered down version of watered down 'Power Punk Pop' bands like Blink 182 and Green Day. ;)

I'd agree with that, I'll use the persuasive 'force' to give them a little nudge :p give it until the end of the tour though for it to take effect :p :p :p

Linkin' Park... yeah they're a bit of a shocker aren't they, I'll throw in Limp Bizkit as well for good measure, is that alright mate?? ;) :D :p
Now, if I have the 'force' to split bands up... who here has the power to make bands reform? If you could give Pop Will Eat Itself a nudge to permanently get them back, that'd be just dandy me' old china! ;)

Hehe.
How about this: Everyone go check out "The Cosmic Game" by Thievery Corporation. That's where it's at-- great grooves, standout vocals, killer sounds and melodies AND guest spots by Perry Farrell and David Byrne  :D :D

I don't understand how can pu compare bands who are totally different styles of music?! If you don't like punk rock, then don't listen to it! Green Day is also a great band! If you don't like em, don't listen to them! It's easy! U2 have some nice songs, but most of them are pretty much boring.

There are just too many unbelievably bad bands out there clogging up the radio and overflowing onto living room floor.
I think you might have to start working a little overtime just to catch up with all the Disney based music that has been attacking my aching eardrums. :D
And now for the band that I would like to see reform..........Cibo Mato.
I don't know how many of you guys have heard of them, and even though I tend to lean towards the heavier stuff, I just have to say that they are just a good old fashioned pop band.

Blink 182.......IS NOT PUNK!!!!!!!
They are pop punk, and if you like them, enjoy.
They are light, and frothy, and very sugary. They are in the same category as most of the Disney based recording industry (aka. any boy band on the planet).
Like whatever you want, but if you want to find out what real Punk is about, buy, rent, or steal a copy of the movies REPO MAN, and ERASER HEAD.

Do you understand what u're saying?
Pop punk? Blink 182 is a commercial skate punk rock band. So what if they are on MTV and everywhere else, they are sugary, light(depends) liked by the people and make money, anything wrong with that? Blink 182 is not an underground band, they are a commercial band and have great songs. I'm not saying commercial music is that good, but you can't deny that there are exceptions. Boy bands can be put in a same group of people making music for money with Blink.
I don't know what 'real' punk is about, I haven't seen those movies, nor heard those bands, i'll give them a look. One of my favourite bands are Bad Religion and Millencolin. What you are referring to is probably of differeny era of punk music evolution.

If you like something don't let anyone tell you that you don't like it, or that you shouldn't like it.
There are plenty of bands out there to suit everyone.
It's just that I take umbrage to the fact that pop music has co-opted the Punk image as a way to sell stale music. Hence pop punk, and Hot Topic stores in every mall in the universe.
If you dig it, enjoy.
If you want to find out more about why punk happened go for it. There are many, many styles encompassed by the "punk" label. The main thing is that it has to have a spirit of honesty, and conviction in what that band is trying to say.
The Groups of Wrath album is a sampler put out by Marty Thau that includes Blondie, The New York Dolls, The Bloodless Pharaohs, Suicide, The Fleshtones, Richard Hell & the Voidoids, and the Ramones. It's a very diverse sampling of what punk rock has to offer.
Wendy O. Williams was the lead singer of the Plasmatics.
I didn't mean to cause any offense to you personally, and I don't want to highjack this thread.
So, sorry to all that have had to read my drivel.

Am I the only one who likes Green Day (the new album kicks ass), and Linkin Park? Yes, Green Day are pop punk and LP aren't exactly fine musical artists, but their music sounds great (most of the time, they both have their low points). Blink 182 had some great hits - Dammit, Josie, just about the entire Enema of the State album - but they've been sliding downhill. Gonna miss them.
Good Charlotte started great with Self-titled, started to get a stupid punk image but maintained their quality (if not better) with Young and Hopeless, but completely lost it with Chronicles. The image got to their heads and they messed with their winning formula too much. Blah.
I'm actually coming around to the Scissor Sisters, I thought they were just eurotrash when I first saw their ad, but Take Your Mama and Laura are actually really good songs. Interpol, I've heard good reviews but never actually heard the music. They've been compared to Coldplay, which can only be a good thing. U2 can be pretty boring agreed, but they can still pull out miracles (Beautiful Day, Electrical Storm come to mind).
And who said Elton John was crap??? Anyone who's had a US Top 40 hit every year for 30 straight years (not to mention the first - and second - albums EVER to debut at US #1) can't be that bad. Even Elvis only managed 22.
My vote for next gravestone is Simple Plan - what's the big friggin' deal? Contrived pop punk vocals (would suck live I predict, Good Charlotte would eat them alive), brain-dead poor-me lyrics (Welcome To My Life? Moron.), the hooks are the only thing keeping them at the top of the charts. So how did they become this New Big Thing so fast???
And yes, Busted was a one hit wonder. I had to check the picture to remember who they were :p . "Oh yeah, the teacher pervs." :D Whatever. Goodbye.

First of all, Green Day isn't nearly as bad as Blink 182. Some of GD's older stuff is pretty good, and c'mon, Good Riddance is a pretty good song... Since their new album isn't very good I wouldn't be heartbroken to see them go, but I just can't lump them together. As for who needs to go, I'd really love to see Franz Ferdinand eat it. F*** those guys. They suck and everybody likes them.

It always amuses me how elitist "punk" fans. Whether you like it or not, Blink 182 is a punk rock band. The fact they are actually successful and have some good songs does not change that. In other words, you don't have to be a whiny, untalented, underground freak show to be considered punk. I'm no fan of Blink 182, either, but I don't dislike them because they were successful.
Now, Green Day is one of my favorite bands and are much more talented than Blink was. Please don't wish for them to break up, although I don't think they will after their latest album was such a success :p. I grew up listening to their music so I guess I will always like their stuff. And, er, all you Europeans out there dissing American music--you don't have to import all your culture from us...

I'll try this one more time............I am not elitist.
I listen to every genre of music under the sun. If you guys want to read the entire thread I even wanted Cibo Mato, a pop band, to reform.
I don't like or dislike anyone because of the amount of records they sell.
I hate to do this but I will quote myself...
I'm not offended. And I said that you can like whatever you want.
If you like something don't let anyone tell you that you don't like it, or that you shouldn't like it.

I didn't think that could be mistaken for elitism, but I guess it was.
I just think that comparing blink 182 to punk is on the same par as comparing Kenny G to jazz...............Yeah they both sold a lot of records and are very popular, but Kenny G ain't no Dizzy Gillespie.
And by the way Green Day is a better band than they get credit for, they do write some pretty solid songs. And I do like Bad Religion.
Now hopefully we can end this by getting back on topic.
Please, Please, Please break up the unnatural duo of Mutt Lang and Shania Twain (that's if they're still together, I have no idea).
And hopefully the Setzer brothers will patch things up and reform the Bloodless Pharaohs (Brian Setzer's band before the Stray Cats).

By that definition you must think Britney Spears is gods gift as she is commercially succesful too. Selling a lot of records is not a marker of how good you are. Microsoft sells a lot more copies of Windows than Apple does OS X. So which is better?
For the record. Elton was good when he started. he hasn't done anything decent since the eighties.

The Beatles were a creation of a certain Mr.Epstein and were the ultimate boy band.If you listen to the early Beatles as opposed to the later years you can hear how the music grew out of what would now be considered "boy band pop" into a more solid ballad, stronger written lyrics and better built songs.
Further more The Beatles evolved and that kept them fresh, as Green Day and Blink 182 stayed with the same kinds of boy punk and its getting old now. The music is not strong enough to hold up to the test of time.

And from what I hear, Kenny-G is also an ass. This is complete hearsay, but this is the story I heard: Kenny-G had just finished playing at the Newport Jazz Festival (http://www.apassion4jazz.net/newport.html), and said "People say that the greatest jazz musicians in the world have played here. Now it's true" (or something to that effect). I also heard a funny story about Thelonious Monk after he finished his set, but that's even more OT ;)

back to the topic...
blink was actually a pretty capable pop punk band... they had a period of not being so great, but their early albums and their last album were all pretty good (certainly better than most of what passes for pop-punk these days).
the main bad thing i see coming from this is that all the groups that have involved blink members on their own have sucked (boxcar racer? the transplants? all rubbish).
i for one will miss them. they were pretty unique compared to their commercially successful bretheren (two lead vocalists? no obvious front man? a drummer and bassist that are acctually capable? wow).
back off the topic...
comon you guys, don't bash on green day. yea, their last album sucked, but i'd contend that they've been one of the most important bands of the past decade (plus or minus 2 or so years). i don't know if you people remember dookie, but that album has insired quite a lot of people. just like band like green day learned toplay guitar to ramones songs, there's a whole generation of kids that learned to play guitar playing green day songs.
that is all.

Yes, that was my point. :) Hair metal is an offshoot of heavy metal the same way pop-punk is an offshoot of punk. And DL wasn't the "hairiest" of hair bands and I don't think Blink 182 is the poppiest of pop-punk.

alright, i didn't say that nirvana was any less or more important, i just said that green was one of the most important. there's no denying that nirvana played a big part in getting kids to pick up guitars, but i'd contend that green day had the same effect (though perhas to a lesser degree). the point was that green day has been a hugely influential band.
and for what its worth, green day was a more talented band and has had more direct influence on the music industry. yea, nirvana probably got more kids to pick up guitars, but grunge pretty much died with kurt, whereas pop-punk is still going strong.

Whoever said Franz Ferdinand should break up should really go play in traffic.
There are a lot of good bands out there, but if you live in a city where the only radio station that plays "alternative" music is in the 104.x range watch out. All you get on that station is corporate alternative garbage.
Luckily seattle got out of that market a year ago or so, but browse around iTunes and you should find some stuff you like that is better than well...basically all the aforementioned bands.
Here are a couple places to start. Enjoy.
(they are gunna be basically no-name bands for most people, but they got a couple good songs and might kick ass in the future or disapear)
Secret Machines (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=5305593&originStoreFront=143441)

The Faint (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=26112454&originStoreFront=143441)
And some that you have heard before, but should look a bit deeper into.

Modest Mouse (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=5561110&originStoreFront=143441)
Alright im done. Take a chance, listen to one of these a bit, then click on the iMix's and explore them. Great way to find bands you might not have heard about. Enjoy.

Wow.You musn't have heard the Fast Food Rockers. Or Dollar. Or Westlife. Or S Club 8 etc etc.
Plus Scissor Sisters are pretty good. The thing people here seem to hate about them is "Comfortably Numb" (which in fairness isn't great) which is by no means the best song on the album - Laura and Return to Oz are both better. But most people (here's looking at you, iGav ;) :p) hate them 'cause they're Pink Floyd Fanboys. ;)

Regardless of all the on- and off-topic posts and vaarying opnions here, Blink 182's drummer, Travis Barker, rocks. He is one of the best drummers out there today. Not just in rock or pop or pop-punk or whatever you want to call it, but in all of music. He may just be a card-carrying ninja.

I don't see any comparison to Pink FLoyd.

Actually Travis Barker is typically recognized as a stand out drummer and seems to get a lot of respect from the drumming community.

I'm not even sure how to respond... how/why would I be bluffing? The proof I would use to back up my claim would be any Blink 182 CD along with any material by Boxcar Racer or The Transplants. I even think he played some gigs with the Vandals. Trust me, Travis Barker is the real deal.

How about Pancho Sanchez? I saw him once and he was telling the audience that his hands are so calloused that they hit like 2x4 lumber when he drums. He was also an unbelievable percussionist. Blew me away.

I wasn't implying that because he's had #1 hits he's good (Nitty, anyone?). But being in the top 40 for three decades is evidence that he can evolve his style and have staying power, rather than Britney who I predict may release one more album and then burn out. Anyone who can have John Lennon on his hands and knees bowing to him must be pretty good. And some of his later stuff like the Lion King soundtrack and Sacrifice is good, but yeah, most of the other stuff is filler.
Limp Bizkit, didn't listen to their last album much, but did anyone else notice the Apple ad inside the album? The last page had the "Think Different" ode and the logo  . Wonder how much they got paid. Now that Wes Borland has rejoined I wonder what they do now.
And yes, Kurt Cobain and Layne Stayley were both good. Although it's annoying when I talk about Nirvana and Alice in Chains they go "Alice who?". And when I play any of it they just say "oh, 80s hair metal crap."

Good drummers are hard to find in rock bands now a days. All they seem to do now is just keep beat instead of being apart of the music.

Screw all this new age skater punk, does anyone still listen to classic 80's metal, I find myself listening to that more now then the current stuff on the radio.
