What a numbnuts

I've just spent the past 2 days getting a ThinkPad up and running (windows AND linux) and boy did it take me down memory lane. Thank whatever diety there is for the Mac, otherwise I'd give up on computers all together.

It's not just the Mac OS that's easy to work with, the hardware is much easier, too. :)

I think I've seen that floating around before. There are a few diferent versions. Its funny though because they have different people in them but they all say pretty much the same thing. What are these people passing around the same script or something?

In my opinion the video was a bit large. Maybe they could make it about half size smaller for those with a slower connection.

Strikes me as a sad piece of attempted viral marketing by our friends in Redmond. It just has that feel about it...

Hnnngghhh!

Last night I decided to install SP2 on my Dell. I'm still trying.

The install seemed to go ok, but when trying to log in for the first time, Windows couldn't verify its license. Turns out this is a common problem with Dells, and I found the fix online (thankfully I have more than one computer).

So, I was able to get past the login screen. But during login it popped a message that I barely had time to read, saying it had come across a registry problem and was continuing after finding something or other in some file or log or something.

So I get to my desktop, everything looks ok, email and web browser works.

But I can't access my VPN. Same setup works on my laptop which doesn't have SP2. I thought it might be SP2's builtin firewall, but apparently the Security Service isn't running (presumably because of the registry error earlier) so I can't access any of the new security stuff. (I'm not exactly computer-illiterate, but I've never used a PC with SP2 before). I mess around with it for a couple of hours without success, then say "screw it, it's been over a year. It's time I reinstalled Windows anyway".

So I shove my Windows install disk into the CD drive and reboot. But it takes me to the login screen - hunnh? I log in and check "My computer" - no CD drive.

I go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager - there's a little yellow icon on the CD drive. Clicking on it brings up "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)."

So I right-click on the device entry and select Update Driver. After a couple of screens it pops up with the message something like "Put your CDROM in the drive and hit OK". After hitting my head on the desk a few times, I press ok anyway, and Device Manager locks up.

This is where I'm at now - five hours spent on it so far ...

OT... It doesn't matter if Windows sees the CD drive or not, for your computer to boot off the CD drive, it's the BIOS that has to see it. Boot into BIOS and check it it sees the CD drive. If it does, make sure it's bootable. Make it first in the boot sequence to ensure the computer attempts to boot from the CD before Windows.

I thought it is quite funny, annoying, but funny... But it's strange to see these things completely out of context, with no background information - is it a joke or an add that was never used. Is sombody serious about this (I hope not). Normally our perception of things is based a lot about our background knowledge about stuff like that.

Anybody knows where it came from?

[Blush] I forgot that the software restart is not the same as a reboot.

Anyway two hours later and about five more restarts, I'm almost ready to reinstall SP2. Wish me luck.

these and the other comments above like it just make me laugh. i just got my first mac like 2-3 weeks ago and yes, i like it alot, but i'm sticking with my home built pc for a desktop and going with my powerbook for a laptop. when those advertisements this guy is mocking that Apple themselves actually made came out, you were all for them saying they're great, funny, its soo true, blah blah i'm sure. This guy is obviously a Windows user and is just taking a crack at the stereotype Mac fanatic. Whats the expression, take it as a grain of salt? Apple attacked Microsoft in their ads, and this isn't even a real ad by Microsoft and you're gettin all mad over it.. just laugh at it like intended.

like i said, now i have both a PB and a homebuilt pc desktop, so it's not like i hate Apple. I just think sometimes those Mac users that are "micro$oft is the devil!" type people need to chill out. It's kinda like those people who say i'm not going to conform, down with corporate greed... do they not realized they just conformed into the "i dont conform" group?!?!

ok, enough rant.. sorry, just gets under my skin cause i like OS X and I like Windows, and there are times i think Windows is better suited for stuff, and times i think OS X is, so why be sooo one sided ya know. just my 2 cents....

Is it just me, or is this guy describing problems that never happen on a mac?

I honestly have no idea what he's talking about. Just sounds like baseless propaganda.

On another note, his spasms of rage were funny.

But that's it.

I agree the Mac Zealots need to take the Apples out of thier asses , stop taking it so damn seriously. It's a joke , and a very funny one i might add. Apple bashes M$ in one form or another everytime they get the chance. Switcher Ad's , "Redmond we have a problem" Ad's for Tiger just to name a few and no one gives a crap.

Mean while some jerk off who probabally lives in his mothers basement makes a stupid Video poking fun at Apple and everybody is about to get thier period. "Hint" It's a joke u r not supposed to take it seriously.

What you guys should do is bash Steve Jobs and company and tell him to get off his high horse. It's like ever since the ITMS took off and Apple's stock went through the roof this guy has had his head completely buried up his ass. everyday thier actions make them look more and more like the Greedy Evil Company we call Microsoft.

Apple used to be cool when they were the under dog (they still are in many ways)now like every other corporation that gets a taste of sucess if u even fart the same way as them they will let lose the lawyers on u. Attacking teenage college Kids just for reporting rumors. thats why i'm glad DVD Jon is teaching them a lesson in that no one is untouchable.

Apple keeps this were so superior crap up and they will face the wrath of every young hacker who want's to make a name for them selves just out of pure spite and once the Viruses come rolling in the mac platform will go straight to hell as it would have lost one of it's greatest advantages over windows.

Apple needs to know it's place and stop trying to be the new Microsoft.

Did i ever say I had a problem with the Mac platform , I think not. I said i have a problem with mac zealots and Apple acting like a bully these days , doing things like trying to black mail vendors into paying 10% to wear thier stupid "made for iPod" sticker and will let the smaller vendors who refuse/cannot pay go under. I guess u people want Apple to suceed by any means good or shady. Wonder whats in it for you? besides bragging rights.

I expect such tasteless tactics and behavior from the likes of Sony and Microsoft but it seems like Apple has move far away from being the cool computer company we have all grown to love. You people act like mindless drones who think Jobs is infallible. Isn't this the kind of nonsense we were hoping to get away from when we all made "the switch" in the 1st place , weren't we all supposed to "Think Different".

Sorry but there are some of us who just demand the most for our money, if i'm going 2 blow $2000 on a Computer i have better be cutting edge not 2yr old parts(Power Mac G5). If u look at my list of parts that all have the same thing in common they provide incredible Speed & power while keeping cool and quiet. I love Mac software but not enough to get jerked $2000+ and be further insulted by being given 256MB ram and a $50 Video card , by the way G5 ram is the worst and has very high 3 Cas Latency , it's like the slowest DDR u can buy.

My stuff it picked down from the Power Supply to ther thermal paste on my CPU to the bios configuration for optimal performance. I see it like this , yeah i can buy a BMW M3 if i want a stock kick ass car that looks good or for alot less i can get an Lancer Evo, put 5 grand in it and destroy anything that stops at a red light. Bang for Buck always wins me over.

So u keep paying $2000 for your 2yr old cheese grader but not me ever quote the Raven ...Never more.

as far as size is concerned i'll ask ur girl if she still remember who u are in the morning.

Don't get me wrong I own both platforms , iMac G4 800mhz 15in(circa 2002). I never said macs weren't cool. I also doidn't get into the hardware thing until people had nasty things to say about me because I questioned apples business tactics of recent months comparing them to microsoft and sony. some people here are a little drunk on the mac kool aid and act like whatever good ol's Steve'o does is infallible. Apple is starting to be very greedy and bully like isn't that why we bash microsoft in the 1st place.

C'mon this tread is supposed to be about some arsehole who make a stupid but funny video dissing the Mac , and people here are acting like some crazy cult who just witnessed a bible burning.

The music ... argh ... it makes me want to cringe. Overall, though, it was a good laugh.

Isn't there a PC version too?

Ok, so you like the products but not the company that makes them? If you don't like the company, don't support it. Go get a Dull or build yourself a PC.

Arrrrgghhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Shut up, please, I beg of you...

Did you ever see the 'South Park' episode with 'Wal*Mart Vs. Small Town Shops'? Same problem. Brilliant episode, by the way...

I'm so sick of hearing people say 'Dull', 'Micro$oft' and 'Winblowz'. Stop. You're making it worse for everybody in the long run.

Don't you see what you're doing? First of all, you're labeling yourself as a mac zealot (yay). This just reinforces the opinions of the 'PeeCee troll' that came here to hate you (us / macs / whatever). Why do that? Then, you have to just resort to name-calling in a thread where one person has already made his stance clear - he enjoys PCs.

And the 'penis joke'? And the response? Ugh....

Secondly, you're feeding the 'gang rape' mentality of internet forums - one person starts, the rest don't see a reason not to. That's the way the world works..

And finally? You're being a hypocrite.

'Howso?' you might ponder...

It's not ok to come on here and say, 'OMG, OSX is gay! You guys are gay! Your penis is so small, OMG! I screwed your girlfriend!' without getting banned, but it's ok to do the same thing when it comes to PCs?

Double-standards are neat.

Jesus, why does anybody care about what kind of computer another person uses? Shut up. Use what you want. We have bigger problems in the world.

And about the '...don't like 'em? don't use 'em!' mentality?

It's not always that simple. I know lots of mac users that have to buy and use Windows to use certain programs, or to play games. I'm sure there are a few PC users that have to use macs for certain programs as well...

Did you ever consider the fact, that maybe, he likes OSX but he dislikes Apple as a company - their policies on things and their subpar hardware?

I know I'm in the same boat as him when it comes ot that. I don't really like any kind of corporations - Apple included. Apple overcharges for old hardware and I don't like their stance on some things (like the metadata in the iTunes downloads). Does that mean I 'love' Microsoft or Windows?

No. I dislike Windows quite a bit. However, Microsoft has created some of my favorite mice, my Xbox and the Pocket PC. All of which I own and enjoy.

I know that right now, your head is probably ready to explode:

'OMG! He likes a few M$ products, but thinks Bill Gates is still a dick1?!?! OMG!!!1'

Yes. That is correct. I disagree with Bill Gates on many issues and I think his OS is junk. However, I will be rational about things in a way that, even though I dislike Bill and his company, if he makes a product that best fits my need, I will purchase it (GASP!?).

This also applies to PC users that bought iPods but hate Apple.

I own three macs and one PC (that I still use, anyway). I love my macs. But honestly, I couldn't live without either. I make a living from my computers, and I enjoy using them (most of the time). Does that mean I have to love the companies that made them? Not really. Do macs crash and have problems? Yes. Does Windows? Yes.

As for my PC? It's a Dell. It's a very nice computer too. Haven't had any problems in two years. Does that mean nobody in the history of the planet has never had any kind of problem with a Dell? No. But it does mean that I'm a satisfied customer - and your claims are probably just rehashed propaganda without any sort of personal (or logical) backing.

And the 'OS Piracy' comment about 'sticking it to the man'...

Yeah, piracy has been around since the dawn of computers. It hasn't brought down Apple of Microsoft yet. It's not going to. The prices don't rise because people aren't buying things. That's not how the world works.

If that were the case, 'clearance' as we know it, would mean that you mark the items up and hope that they sell - using the excuse '...some people stole a few of these, so we're making you pay for it'...

Products are created for about a third of the cost they sell for. They're making a profit either way. All it comes down to really is a personal 'moral' choice. Because realistically, it wouldn't make a bit of difference if you purchased the next OS release or not. The company would still make their money - which is made, mostly be selling large quantities of licenses to institutions, etc.

See, in the business world and in the field of education - you have to have registered software. That's where they make all of their money. The guys that used 'Shake' on 'Lord of the Rings' didn't download Shake. They couldn't. That's where Apple makes the money for 'Shake'.

I hope that made some bit of sense.

The only companies that make these 'piracy' claims are the entertainment companies. And frankly, they deserve it.

They completely overcharge for their products, and most of the time, offer inferior goods anyway.

When Macsoft and Aspyr start making worthwhile ports of games (that arrive on-time and (somewhat) bug-free) that are actually optimized for the hardware they're running on - then people will actually pay money for them.

And please, spare me the '...buy the games they're making now to show that you support them' excuse. That's the most foolish of all stances.

Anyway, that's my rant. Tear it apart if you will. I'd prefer not to speak any more on the matter.

Have a happy.

I might like to point out when that movies was made OSX did not even exist yet. At best it was OS 9 and that OS had a lot of problems.

Still like it when a friend of mine (who is a true mac Zealot) was trying to show it off to me saying how much better it was then windows and then the computer crashed and lock up on him. At the time I think windows 2000 was out or at least NT. It was before XP. I beleive it was around the time War craft 3 was out but I know it was before OSX because I saw it shortly before for OS9 was showed off to me and crashed.

I personally use both a PC and a Mac. And I enjoy them both, its fun to see stuff that pokes fun at both sides of it. Fact is, computers crash. Period. Espically my PC, which its crappy mainboard is giving out. Never buy a Mainboard from an Austrailian company called Octek. Espically if the name of the product has anything to do with RHINOS. Man what were they thinking? I'm glad to have gotten my Mac back up and runnin earlier.

thank you for making my argument valid, The Maczealots do for Apple what , the Gung ho i'm American well Nuke ur ass so-called Patriots do for this country , they ruin everything and if u don't agree with them they tell u 2 **** off or threaten u.

hey shouldn't you be at your evangelical meeting so you could bow and worship to your 40ft painting of Geroge W. while you all figure out new ways to help speed up armegeddon cuz the bible told you it's coming soon.

Heehee...don't get me wrong I love using Macs, but it's just a c-o-m-p-u-t-e-r. If you can't laugh at yourself then I think you've probably missed the point of life, and that extends to lifestyle choices. The video was funny, although I thought he was talking about OS9 because OSX is a dream to use compaired to OS9. I've heard horror stories about both Macs and Windows but by the same measure I've heard each camp praise their chosen OS, each to his own. As for Mr.Bush, don't get me started- that family and associated cronies are pure evil, history will hopefully show them for what they are...middle-bible-waving-america should be ashamed of itself. Sorry rant over...as I said ...each to his own.

I use both Mac and PC as well. It was a complete impulse to change over to the Mac and it really opened my eyes, the whole computing experience was just so much better. I don't really need computers for work or anything, so it wasn't life or death if things didn't work.
There is things I like about windows and things I don't like about OS X, but all in all, the Mac wins hands down.

Competition is goood! It means we get an OS like Tiger! :p :D
