I know that there have been many posts about this in the past, but I wanted to add mine. I got my iBook g3 last year, and it had Panther on it, and I decided I needed an upgrade- bad. Since Tiger is the highest it goes, I bought it off of ebay, and, just for fun, I installed it the day Lion came out. I learned that there are many ways to make it as close to Leopard/ Snow Leopard. Just follow these steps...

1. Download Shapeshifter (http://unsanity.com/haxies/shapeshifter) This is the themeing app.

2. Download Cleardock (http://unsanity.com/haxies/cleardock)

3. Download Like Leopard theme here (http://bladziak.deviantart.com/art/Like-Leopard-V-8-0-Theme-65483298)

Now... Install Shapeshifter. It will tell you you have a 30 day trial. You can use it to try then buy it (it's only 20$, and it's worth it).

Install cleardock, and set the BG to clear and the indicators to the attached color.

Copy the LL apps, and open one or two. Set them as startup items.

Now you are done with theming

For spaces, install Virtue Desktops (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/16530/virtuedesktops) You can change the icon to the spaces on if you really want... I attached it.

Now you are pretty much done... here is my desktop...

Tell me if this helped!

PS- in the LL theme, you have to go to user/ library/ saved searches/ and change the smart folders manually

Shapeshifter is awful simply because it relies on the notoriously bad "Application Enhancer" that installs with virtually all of the Unsanity utilities.

There is a much better and free theme app called ThemePark (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/7419/themepark) that doesn't rely on the horror that is AE.

I find DesktopManager (http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/12682/desktop-manager) to be a great spaces-like utility.

I used Desktop Manager for years. I still like it better than Spaces since it was/is more flexible and more like the multi-desktop functionality in Gnome and KDE that Spaces poorly apes. If only it could replace Spaces.

The current version is actually Intel only I just noticed.. Here is the URL to the last PowerPC capable build: http://prdownload.berlios.de/desktopmanager/DesktopManager-0.5.3.dmg

I switched to Spaces when I started using 10.5 but when on 10.4 I loved DesktopManager. I like how you can turn off all the graphic transitions and see it fly even on a slower G4.

I use themepark, but I can't figure out how to put a theme on my Mac with it. Shapeshifter works well with me. I've never thought of "Desktop Manager". I'll thy it.

Any one know how to install themes with themepark? I have themepark 3:confused:

This is from memory, but I think it's in a menu on the menubar with something like install extra.rscr or something. Sorry, but I don't have access to Themepark at the moment.

Precisely! I first started using it with my dual 450 Gig-E before I upgraded the video card (stock Rage 128 Pro, yech!) and it was silly fast to switch screens with the eye candy turned off. That's one of my only complaints about the newer versions of OS X is that there is too much unnecessary graphical stuff going on.

I tried desktop manager, but I already have virtue desktops, and it it almost the exact same. I've also tried Youcontrol desktops, and it is also very similar.

Virtue desktops lets you do different transitions, also... like slide or cube. I love it.

On a side note, another awsome app for PPC macs is Side Track. You can specify places on the track pad to scroll, to go to dashboard... I use it on my ibook G3, which doesn't have two finger scrolling.

I do not want to have my Tiger look like the newish mobile phone themes and icons apple uses these days... :D

PS: I know, then, I should not have posted here, :) - I am just kidding.

I'd rather know if there's a way to make Lion look like Tiger? I found some
image files, "TigerDock", which would make the dark dock bright and nice.
Never got it to work though, has anyone done this? Never found any "Tiger"
theme for ShapeShifter, but it probably doesn't work on Lion anyway now.

Unfortunately, there's no way to get a Tiger dock on Leo onwards. There are a few hacks but they're all highly impractical:-

TigerDock app which 'follows' the dock with the same images as Tiger's dock. It's mean to be used with a transparent 2D dock (so the app functions as the dock's background). Unfortunately there's a ton of lag and it gets a bit confused with multiple monitors.
Use Tiger's dock app. I think this only works on Leo, but since Spaces is owned by the Dock you would lose Spaces entirely.
Replace the Dock images with Tiger's dock images - I've seen one attempt which fully works, but it makes a ~150px region around the dock unclickable due to its implementation.

So if you see a method to get Tiger's Dock it's most likely using one of these methods (which all suck).

I have the Tiger dock icons for iTunes 6, Terminal and Preferences if you're interested (http://cl.ly/2X1H1s403Y2p3r1r0229).

Personally I love the look of Tiger and I'd never want it to look like anything else.

Thanks. I made use of the PrefApp icon now, can't understand why they changed it. That, the menu bar and the above all the dock is what makes the question pop up in my head when I use Tiger on my old G4. I do understand they want the dock dark to match the dark frames on the current hardwares' screens, but for the white Macbook or the older cinema displays it looks worse. Maybe that's deliberate so they want you to upgrade... while not being able to select between dark or bright docks, they could've least made it easy to hack.

Now, I only use one monitor, and I don't have any icons on the desktop, would the two last options be usable then? Or it it that you can't click on for example scrollbars in windows if you move the window within that 150px region?

I used OnyX to make the menu bar bright white, but in the beta, which is the only version that works for Lion, that option is removed. Could it be that :apple: made it unhackable now? Is there any other program that whitens it?

Ah yeah, the pref icon is beautiful, white menu bar does look great too. I doubt apple purposefully tried to block it, probably just a side effect of them moving stuff around.

I think the ~150px region is based on dock size, you can get the files here (http://lukeedee.deviantart.com/art/Tiger-Dock-for-Snow-Leopard-176844009). Within that region you can't click on anything and you can't do two finger scroll either :( I've only tried it on SL so I have no idea about other gestures.

Works fine for me, don't notice any 150px region. My only gripe is that the dock only changes when placed at the bottom.

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger icons by ~applesandjam on deviantART (http://applesandjam.deviantart.com/art/Mac-OS-X-10-4-Tiger-icons-96720296)

I've found this before and used it on my MacBook Pro with Leopard when I started trying to make it look more like Tiger. I eventually just installed Tiger on another Partition. But anyway, these require CandyBar. I did not make them, I am simply linking to them.

Thanks for that.

Here is my beta version of a Lion theme for Tiger. I say beta, because there are a few small things I need to make changes to. PLEASE tell me what you think! I would like to get feedback!

Here is the link to the file-http://www.megaupload.com/?d=XO7V6UXH

Also, I attached an app you can use to make the dock look 3D. Just download cleardock, and set the indicators to completely transparent.

You can also download Sidetrack (http://mac.majorgeeks.com/download4963.html) and Smart Scroll (http://marcmoini.com/sx_en.html).

My Tiger equipped PowerBook is still going strong.

So is my Lion equipped MBP.

The OS is the only way I have to tell them apart :)

agreed desktop manager is a great app in my opinion even far better then spaces

but nothing beats" compiz fusion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=BGxCwpyHtb4#!)" a linux virtual desktop manager, ok you need a good GPU and a webcam for all effects like headtracking (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTNG1GN4VV8&feature=fvst)..who still needs a touchscreen or trackpad, control your computer with your head

You asked for feedback, I tried out the Lion theme, its a nice beta. For me the menubar in the Finder is still "Tigerfied", though the applications menubars are Lionized, and some of the scroll bars tear as they are used but on the whole I am pretty impressed, can't wait for the Alpha release. That 3d dock drives me nuts though, I prefer the look of cleardock.

ibook g4 1.2ghz, 1.2 GB of RAM, 10.4.11.

Thanks- glad you like it. I'm about to load a newer release, and it will have an optional translucent menubar, and an optional no scrollbars. Also, I've done some changes to images in graphite. By the way...

some of the scroll bars tear as they are used

what do you mean by that?

by the scroll bars tearing is: as you scroll down the top part of the radio button (not sure if that's the right terminology) "tears" off and stays put. It might be a pecularity to my mac, or might not be, so I mentioned it.

Drew017
Oct 31, 2011, 05:17 PM
Doesn't happen on mine... By the way, when you downloaded the beta 1, were you by chance in graphite? I messed up on the graphite scrollbars in the first beta, but it is fixed in the next one.

I would like to know if you can direct me to a link holding your Lion theme for Os Tiger. I am very interested in downloading and I recently noticed MegaUploads has been seized. Thank you for any help. I have recently followed a few of your links and look forward to learning more. In the future I can see myself donating to a developer like yourself.

Thank you,

I am glad you are interested, however I no longer have a copy of the theme I made. I'm very sorry :( I've upgraded to Mountain Lion on my MacBook and I restored my old iBook back to tiger and gave it to a friend. I don't develop anymore either, so I won't be able to make another one. I will check again in some of my old USB drives, but I don't think I have it, although you may be able to PM some of the people who posted in this thread and see if they still have a copy...

Again I'm very sorry! Hopefully someone has it somewhere!
