Earlier this week, Apple released an EFI firmware update for the company's current MacBook Air models, addressing issues with Lion Recovery over the Internet and several Thunderbolt-related issues including compatibility with the forthcoming Apple Thunderbolt Display. Apple has now followed up that release with a pair of new firmware updates today bringing the same fixes to the current MacBook Pro and Mac mini models.

- Macbook Pro EFI Firmware Update 2.2 (4.17 MB)
This update enables Lion Recovery from an Internet connection and includes fixes that resolve issues with Apple Thunderbolt Display compatibility and Thunderbolt Target Disk Mode performance on MacBook Pro (early 2011) models.

- Mac mini EFI Firmware Update 1.3 (4.26 MB)
This update includes fixes that enhance the stability of Lion Recovery from an Internet connection, and resolve issues with Apple Thunderbolt Display compatibility and Thunderbolt Target Disk Mode performance on Mac Mini (mid 2011) models.

Apple has begun shipping the Apple Thunderbolt Display to stores and resellers, and should be delivering them to customers in the near future.

For those with the 24" ACD, hopefully this fixes the flickering/blackouts.

Edit: according to the Apple discussions, the issues persist :(

Can anyone confirm that this fixes the issue seen with 2011 MBPros using minidisplayport to HDMI adapters? The issue causes the monitor to be seen as a Television and the images looks like garbage as a result

I'm really hoping this makes my new Mac mini usable with my 24" ACD. It blacks out and scrambles every few minutes.

Fingers crossed.

EDIT:
For the first 24 hours after installing the EFI update everything was fine, but this morning I had another black flash. Looks like it is still not fixed. I'm beginning to wonder if it is even fixable at all. Why would it take this long for Apple to do something about this issue? Even more troubling is why Apple didn't test the less-than-a-year-old 24" ACD with the Thunderbolt port.

Hmm. The system requirements for the Thunderbolt display list OS 10.6.8 but the firmware update lists 10.7 (although I haven't actually tried installing it yet). Why should a firmware update require a particular OS anyway?

I noticed that too, but it installed fine for me on 10.6.8, although it didn't show up in Software Update.

If you use TrueCrypt or FileVault, you can see that with this EFI update Apple has also enabled AES-NI in the low-end 15' MBP with the 2635-QM processor!

Perhaps it's the recovery partition scheme introduced with Lion.

For a few more hundred dollars one can buy an iMac.
iMacs are very difficult and cumbersome to bring along when on the move... Also, you do get two displays of course with a laptop plus an external display (or three displays total with two external units, since thunderbolt supports daisy-chaining on Macbook Pros with discrete graphics processors.)

That did not happen for me when I used a mini DisplayPort to HDMI converter cable on my 13" 2011 MBP. Maybe you just need a better converter... :)

Mid-2009 MBPs with original, v1 logic boards need an EFI 1.8 update to fix the SATA II issue. Or do something about it. Why not get nvidia to recall these logic boards and pay for the replacements for all who ask for it? If they think its a small number of users experiencing theses issues - even better. It will be cost effective to fix this random and absurd issue and doing so will stop these customers bad-mouthing (not without merit) the company.
