I don't know about you all, but:
250GB instead of 160GB
128MB 9600 instead of 64MB nvidia :(
667mhz bus instead of 600mhz
Tiger instead of Panther
makes me:
1. Wish I had waited 2 weeks
2. Jealious of anyone that plays games on the new iMac

If I hadn't just got this Powerbook, I'd probably be getting one. I love the portability, but damn, that's a lot of power for the price.
When I got my old 20" iMac G5 I paid £1700 for one with 1gb RAM and all the extras.
It's now £1300 for a 20" with 1gb RAM
Not only that, but it's got a much better video card - the FX5200 was fine for the 17" model for 2D stuff, but it was hopeless in games. (I don't usually play games on a computer, but wanted to play WoW) The 20" was even dropping frames in Exposé with only a few windows open. The 9600 is the perfect card for the iMac.

Not to make you even more sad, but didn't you check the buyer's guide?
Edit: oh yeah, I have my eyes on the superdrive 17" model... But I can't order one, my credit card limit is only 500$CAD!
And the "local" (read: 1 hour drive, 2 hours total) stores won't have them for at least a week or two.

i'm gonna order the 20" with default options at the end of the week (ram can wait, 512 is plenty as my mini runs fine with the same amount)
i was about to order a 23" hd display for my mini but now the new imacs are out im definatly gonna buy one, only thing thats dissapointing is my 2 month old mini will be a bit left out.
on the up side, i ordered a bluetooth kb and mouse with my mini so i can use them on the imac and use the wired ones with the mini.
also how good are the speakers on the imac - should i put my soundsticks on the imac or mini?

the 20'' speakers are clear. However, no base. :(
I use external speakers with a subwoofer.
I'm still proud of my rev A. It looks so hot, and gaming is moderate. But better that it was when I had my mac mini :)

Hmm, much as I love being a husband and father and owning (ie. paying the bank for) my own house, we bought a new sofa two weeks ago (my thoughts as I signed the credit card slip: "there goes my Powerbook") and yesterday we found a leak under one of the bathrooms ("there goes the iBook or iMac") so I'm really envious of anyone who doesn't have to juggle responsibilities and can just go out and buy a new Mac when they want to. Not that I'd swap places ... but I can be envious.

According to my graphics guru friend, they're basically the same, except that the Radeon 9600 in the new iMacs has 128MB VRAM, which will make it perform significantly better. But the card itself is not much better. He says it's a fairly decent card for a consumer computer.
I ordered a 20" this morning. :D

I think I'm gonna get the 17" 2.0 ghz model. I was gonna buy a mac mini in June w/ a recently bought a 20" LCD but this update changes the plan. How would a Dell 20" 2005fpw look beside the 17" w/ the screen spanning hack? I know a 20" iMac would be better but I cant afford it.

I'm hoping mine breaks and Frys has to replace the guts of it. They have a really good warranty when it comes to things like that.
Only problem is, the two iMacs I have had don't break that often. My original has only needed the CDRW replaced and everything else has worked fine.
I run my G5 24/7 and the CPU is always at 100% (according to my widget) and the fans don't even run all that hard anymore.
Oh well, still 4.5 years to go on the warranty. Maybe I'll get a Rev C, if it comes to that.

I am really torn atm, my present iMac lags when i use it, so when these updates came up i thought great improvements in every area and on the whole a much better 20" iMac. I can sell mine for about a grand, with my 10% discount card i can get a new iMac for about £1080.
For £80 extra do u think it is worth the extra HD space/slightly better gfx and slight speed increases over my present iMac?
The main thing for me is the better gfx, i mean the FX5200 is pretty bad and for games gets a bit frustrating.

I would be extremely weary of hacking the iMac's 9600. I'm not exactly sure what the effect of the hack is supposed to be, but if it involves increasing the clock speed (and therefore voltage) of the GPU, this could not be good for what has in the past been a computer that has somewhat sensitive components (e.g. bulging capacitors in Rev. A), not to mention that it will increase the temperature inside the case, which can't be good either. And if you fry the GPU on the iMac, the whole midplane has to be replaced. Just some things to consider. Maybe the hack doesn't even do what I think it might.

I thought Apple just disabled the screen span feature to make the PM stand out more and hack merely enables it.

I'm torn now. I day ago I was 100% sure I wanted to get the dual 2.0 G5 Powermac, but now the 20" iMac is out with very comparable specs, and a 20" LCD for about the same cost, if not less. Now I've had all-in-ones before, in fact I have only had all-in-ones, but I really wanted the expandability this time, so I can easily add HD or upgrade the video card (i Do a fair bit of work in Motion, FCP, etc.), but the price point of the iMac makes me second guess that. any ideas/suggestions?

Anyone else also notice that the viewing angle for the 20" is now 170 degrees vertical and horizontal and 400:1 contrast ratio?? These are the exact same specs for the 20" cinema display.
I reckon new displays could be introduced this WWDC with improved response time and contrast.

FINALLLYYYYY...
My patience finally pays off. After reading, reading and more reading...making
odd maths to fit the budget...finally Apple makes something good.
In this case, what sold me was the video card. I thought they would
stick with the 64Mb for the next two years. I do not think it is
the best vram but still will run Tiger fine. Farewell ibooks, minis and
the pricey powerbook !!! Funny thing is that I do not like all-in-one
computers but this config makes the sacrifice worth it.
I noticied one thing though...if you choose the new imac with the
wireless keyboard + mouse the price goes up ~60 dollars.
BUT...if you get only the imac with regular kb and mouse,
the wireless set is... ~60 dollars...so what ? Why someone would
choose wireless over the wired on the order ?
Anyway, this does not matter.

i have of course no specific information about a 23" imac. but steve said its the year of HD. and they introduced the old 20" imac in between updates as a total surprise. so i'm hoping. but of course the actual 20" is very tempting because you get 10% more computer for 25% less money if you compare same specs. that makes the imac 20" loaded at $2100 a really great value. even Tiger and iLife05is there. the deal is even comparable/competitive to dell hardware/junk prices.
12" PB + 20"imac is the dream combo. they should sell it as a bundle with 10% off...........

I actually ordered 2 imacs yesterday.
For myself, a 20" Rev B with BT keyboard and mouse. Ordered 2GB of RAM from crucial, so this is going to be one sweet machine. Also picked a airport express (30 free itunes!!!), a freebie HP printer (after rebate), and an iSight. Edu discount made this much nicer than it would have been a few weeks ago.
For my Dad, I ordered a rev A 1.8Ghz 17", stock. At $999 (with my Mom's Edu discount), this was too good to pass up. He doesn't use bluetooth or Wifi, so those new features will be lost on him. The HD increase would be meaningless, as he doesn't do any video editing. I'm sending him my 512MB of ram from the above computer, so he'll be fine with 768MB of RAM, as least for now. I also ordered him an iSight. That was really the big selling feature to them... video chat so they can see my son (their grandson) from across the country.
So, a big day for apple from our family. I can't wait for the computers to get here. I'm so glad I waited.

There won't be another iMac update at WWDC. That's near to impossible. :p This is a great time to buy. There probably won't be another iMac update for 8 months, and if you think about it, the next update will probably be: minor speed bump and frontside bus increase, no change in the RAM (the standard probably won't go above 512 for 1-2 years now), no change in the HD space, POSSIBLY a better graphics card but Apple has never been aggressive with GPU offerings.
The only difference may be in the processor (MP). I'm not waiting 8 months though. :p This iMac is a huge upgrade over the previous, and will be an awesome machine for years to come.

That is significant!

I think the iMac G5 rev B is going to be my next Mac, but I want to wait to see if the problems with hard drive access speed (can't remember the exact problem) are cleared up. I would hope that Apple fixed that, but you never know.
Plus, there's the slight possibility that hell could freeze over and Steve could announce a G5 PowerBook at WWDC. If that happened, my choice would be really tough. So, I'm going to wait until then, and then order the iMac should the temperature below indeed not drop.

Yeh it isn't bad, but Apple have been proved to overstate their 'benchmarks' to sell their new products, i mean take the ridiculous over 200% frame rate improvement the Rev A iMac G5's apparently had over the G4 iMacs. It works in that it makes me want one, but also kinda makes us rev a owners pissed off. ah well. After doing research the Radeon 9600 is pretty much the same as the FX5200, just with double the vram.
I have decided no rev b for me, i am sticking with my iMac till there is the next Power Mac update, just not worth the hassle of switching Macs again.
