A growing thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1247466) in our forums reveals many users seeing "Error 3200" while attempting to upgrade to iOS 5. Speculation points to this just being related to Apple's servers being overloaded, and some users are seeing success after multiple attempts.

At this point, simply waiting and retrying seems to be the best solution.

For other issues or problems, see our iOS 5 discussion forum (http://forums.macrumors.com/forumdisplay.php?f=154).

All

I have successfully downloaded the iPhone ios5 update for my ip4. However after backing up my iphone and extracting the software it gives a 3200 error - any thoughts on fixing it?

Thanks

I got the same on my 3GS. I'm trying a second time, maybe it was just a fluke. Anyone know what this is/how to get around it?

From iTunes, go to Edit -> Preferences -> Devices. Select your iPhone and click "Delete Backup". That did the trick for me.

Edit: Apologies. It seems like the Apple servers are just overloaded. Deleting my backups (thought they were corrupt) was just a fluke. Give it time or just keep hitting update and it'll work.

So the only trick thus far is to completely get rid of all your info on your iphone/ipad? What if you need all that info ( i.e. backup?)

Ok, so editing host files makes no difference. I'm not deleting the back up. no chance.

Does anyone really know what error 3200 is about?

brkaus
Oct 12, 2011, 02:08 PM
I had -1303 errors. First tried the tricks about deleting the backup data (I have it on an online backup service if absolutly needed). Found I had to delete the link that I had to move the backup folder to a second drive. That resolved the -1303 error.

then I had 3200. Tried about 6 times with ipad and iphone. Finally unplugged all USB devices I didn't need and plugged the ipad into a back usb port (desktop windows 7 machine). It worked this time!!! Luck? Real solution? Not sure.

StephTheMuggle

I think it's some sort of traffic issue. Millions of people trying to download at the same time. Not to mention it's a heavy update, hence the time it takes to download. :( I think were just gonna have to wait it out. If Steve were here, he'd know what to do. We miss you Steve! :)

Hi Guys

just thought i would carry on trying to get the software to install having had the 3200 error about 4 or 5 times - my suspicion is that demand on the server for verification with iTunes is so high that it is failing there. All of a sudden mine has actually started installing....... watch this space in case it actually completes!

Just spoke with Apple. Error 3200 is an internal error which they are working on. It was tripped because of how many people using the download. THERES NOTHING USERS CAN DO TO CHANGE THE ERROR CODE. So we will have to just keep trying until its fixed. Was told could be a few hours.

sark7
Oct 12, 2011, 02:27 PM
Guys if the issue is with the traffic trying to verify with apple then its pot luck and whatever work arounds happen to work at the moment that it verifies will only create a whole lot of different false solutions. I have done nothing to alter my set up at all but persisted with multiple attempts to get it installed and where it was failing was at the point of verifying with iTunes. Up to you but I wouldn't go fiddling too much under the bonnet ;)

now restoring iPhone apps ;)

Errors 3000-3999 (3002, 3004, 3013, 3014, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the gs.apple.com server on ports 80 or 443. This may be because out-of-date or incorrectly configured security or firewall software is interfering, an old version of iTunes is installed, an entry in your hosts file redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see error 1004 above), or because of your Internet proxy settings...or gs.apple.com server is getting DDOS'ed by all the users trying to update at the same exact time..

It's ironic that the over the air updates this version introduces will eliminate this sort of issue. Just imagine:

"By the way... all the new features we just announced are available for all IOS 5 users right NOW. Take a look for yourselves.."

It has nothing to do with any of your settings. The servers are overloaded. It took about 20 attempts on my iPad before it got going. Sometimes it would reset the device, sometimes not, but error 3200 will keep coming up until you get lucky or things slow down a little.

Error 3200

After viewing the log at:

I closed all apps and removed all the files from my temp directory:

Update worked fine afterwards...

Good Luck and YMMV.

whew, after about 10 or so tries it finally went through the whole thing.

I don't really have an explanation as to what worked for me :/
After seeing error 3200 2-3 times I went into DFU mode, then kept trying. Sometimes it would fail right away, other times it would go through all of the steps then fail anyway. Now it went through all of the verifications and I am successfully on iOS 5

Got the 3200 here too - then got stuck in DFU mode and couldn't go anywhere. At about the 6th attempt, finally managed a "restore" which installed 5.0 happily. Now having to restore from backup so waiting for 25GB of content to re-sync... (iPad 2, iTunes 10.5).

It does look like a server load issue which will eventually go away, but loads of people must be getting this today.

Installed IOS 5.0 on iPad earlier in the day with no problems.

Then tried with iPhone 4 and got 3200 error. Error occurred after downloading IOS 5.0 and just as iTunes was communicating with iPhone.

Here's what worked for me:

1. Unplugged iPhone from USB port and rebooted iPhone.
2. Closed and reopened iTunes.
3. Reconnected iPhone. It gave me message saying IOS 5.0 upgrade available but I cancelled this.
4. Forced a normal sync process.
5. Then clicked Update to IOS 5.0
6. iTunes immediately began communicating with iPhone and update proceeded without problems. Appeared that it still had download of IOS 5.0 in memory as it did not have to download again before updating the iPhone.
7. IOS 5.0 installation completed successfully.

I have an iphone 4. I tried to update this to ios 5 a few times and was receiving the 3200 error. After one of the errors the iphone when into recovery mode. I then tried to recover it through itunes, and it got the 3200 error again.

Now the phone just keeps cycling back and forth between the a blank screen with the rotating loading symbol and the blank screen with the apple logo. Sometimes a loading bar pops up under the apple logo, but this bar never fills all the way up.

The phone isnt showing up in iTunes anymore either. Had no idea I could do this much harm to my phone by just clicking on the "update" and "restore" buttons...

I received the 3200 error several times on my iPad. I took a shot and did a backup (not sync - just backup), then a sync. Afterwards the update ran fine. Probably had nothing to do with the order I did things, but I provide it nonetheless. I was on 4.3.5 and iTunes 10.5.

Note: I did turn off my anti-virus, but the error occurred once afterwards anyway. I did not reboot, delete any backups, or delete any caches. Good Luck to all.

http://thenextweb.com/apple/2011/10/12/apples-ios-5-upgrade-servers-are-slammed-causing-3200-or-internal-error-update-issues/

We all love Apple!:D
If you’re having problems updating your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to iOS 5, you’re not alone. We’re getting reports across the board that many are having issues updating to the latest version of Apple’s iOS software, released today.

The issues seem to center around the point at which iTunes contacts Apple’s servers to verify and activate the update process. The issues are likely due to the fact that Apple’s servers are slammed and are only handling ‘half’ of the requests. This information comes via Jay Freeman, AKA Saurik, an iPhone jailbreaker and the creator of the Cydia app store for jailbroken iPhones.

To anyone getting “An internal error occurred.” (3200) while installing iOS 5.0, Apple’s servers are swamped, and failing half the requests.

A 3200, or “internal error”, message is being given to those attempting to update their devices and many are reporting success after trying the update process 5 or even 10 times.

fernando.kreutz
Oct 12, 2011, 03:20 PM
These errors seems to be related to Apple servers. After a lot of 3002 errors and some 3004, reading a Apple document related to this errors suggested to close iTunes and flush the dns cache trough terminal, with this command: dscacheutil -flushcache

And you know what? It did the trick.

I guess Apple is working the 3200 error. I just tried updating for the third time and usually get the 3200 error right after the extracting software phase. This time instead of a 3200 error, I got an error that plainly said itunes could not contact the apple software update server and to try later.

Giving it a try again, third time will work hopefully.

Must annoying part is that it takes like 30mins to Backup the iPhone, and then you get the error. So iTunes goes and backups again, and the error.

Surely the initial backup should be all that is needed, Apple need to address this in future iTunes.

With my iPhone 4 it only took 1x

However, I had to try like 15x before it actually worked on my iPad 2.
I deleted the backup from the preference>devices, but obviously that did not
work.. still was getting error message 3200. However, since nothing was happening even though I erased the backup.. the ipad itself had not been restored so I finally rebooted and still no dice. just kept repeating this procedure until it worked. I've already restored from my backup-- and am currently syncing all my apps back into it...

This is just great. Now my phone is stuck at the prompt to plug it in to the computer and sync with iTunes. Problem is, it won't proceed and restore to my backup. iPhone = bricked right now until server load is resolved. Worst. iOS release. Ever.

Be careful, my phone was at this point. I tried to restore through itunes and then it failed again (3200) and went into a boot loop. Still trying to get it out.

I am getting this error does anyone know which one this is? My iPhone is in recovery mode and i am unable to use it until it recovers...

I'm getting the same one currently and when I looked up the troubleshooting it said 3014 could be because I don't have enough disk space on my computer. I got the same 3014 error message on my PC which admittedly is low on disk space and my 2011 MBA which has 80 gigs free so I'm a bit confused. Any thoughts?

Update bricked my Verizon iPhone 4. It restarted in recovery mode a factory restore brought it back.

Restoring from my backup left me with no purchased or transferred Apps, Music, Pics, etc.

At least the phone is working and I can put everything back, but yikes.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8G4 Safari/6533.18.5)

I read on another forum that putting the phone in Airplane Mode works.

I tried that, and didn't get the 3200 error. Not sure if that actually resolved the problem, or if it was a coincidence.

Not working for me.

Absolutely surprising, but AIRPLANE MODE work for me! :D

FYI mine is an iPhone 3GS 16GB who's previously running on iOS 4.2.1 jailbroken and now running fine on 5.0!

Try this, - turn iPhone or iPad on and sync. If you get an error message, drink a beer. Re-try the whole sync process, if it still fails, drink another beer, this time pop open a bag of chips. Try to re-sync. If this continues to fail, keep popping the beers open. Eventually, the sync will work, or you really won't give a crap, fall asleep then retry the update tomorrow when the servers aren't so busy.

Sent from my iPad 2 running iOS 5.

3rd Time lucky for me, seems to be working this time.... least it's gotten much further this time anyway, currently restoring iPad apps.

Poor message if it is server overload their side, the suggested fixes for this generic message are all related to things the users can try ... none of which are "wait a while"

iSad. Maybe they shouldn't have released this on the same day they're pushing OSX updates, XCode updates, Aperture updates and iCloud uploads. Apple's NOCs must be getting hammered.

I stopped trying and applied the Lion 10.7.2 update. Once that was complete I tried again and it worked the first time. Likely a coincidence, but hey worth a shot. ;)

Hopefully the fact that I'm on like my 20th try isn't an indication of how reliable iCloud will be.
