As previously announced (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/10/13/grand-theft-auto-iii-coming-to-ipad-2-and-iphone-4s/), Rockstar Games' classic Grand Theft Auto III is coming to the iPhone and iPad (http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/19751/grand-theft-auto-iii-10-year-anniversary-edition-coming-to-mobil.html) on December 15th.
10 years ago ... the revolutionary open-world epic Grand Theft Auto III was released to the world - a game that set players loose as a small-time criminal at the bottom of the food chain in Liberty City, a sprawling metropolis where anything can happen - and probably will. The iOS version of the game will work only on more recent devices as a result of extensive graphics hardware requirements. GTA will run on the iPad 1 & 2, iPhone 4 & 4S, and iPod touch 4th Generation.

Grand Theft Auto III: 10 Year Anniversary Edition will be available on the App Store next week for $4.99.

That's absolutely incredible. Who would have guessed 10 years ago that we'd be playing GTA3 on our PHONES?

I'll definitely get this if it runs well and the controls are good. If it's gonna be a PITA to play on iOS, then I'll pass. I'm just not sure how well the controls will translate to my 4S.

Woow i still remember when i was jealous of the consoles when i read the review on GTA3, as it was a console exclusive for some time. Otherwise been playing GTA since the first one.

Will be getting this for the iPad.

A must buy if 2 things happen:

1) Universal App
2) Cloud saves.

See this is why "I" would love a bigger screen. When I try to play Dead Space it's a pain.. Pretty cool but will be way easier on a Tab.

What's the name of the operatic song in the background?

It's Puccini's 'O mio babbino caro'.

I'd be very interested to see what sacrifices were made to get it running on A4 devices vs A5 devices. Particularly, is it still native Retina resolution on the 4th gen Touch, since it is RAM constrained compared to the iPhone 4 and downclocked compared to the iPad 1.

WOW, GTA 3 on the iPad. Good luck trying to play it with your screen controls! When is Apple gonna realise that games like COD etc on iOS devices need an actual dual stick controller and that they are missing a trick by not letting the Apple TV run these apps on peoples big screen with said wireless controllers??

The last thing I want on my computers are games.

...but I might be tempted to try this out on the iPad. Could be neat.

Can't believe it's been 10 years since it came out. Darn I'm getting old. I personally prefer games like this on a console, but smart move for Rockstar to release it for iOS.

Cloud saves would be awesome.

Apple should just require this / standardize it. There's no reason for games to keep coming out without this option.

I'm not sure if I want to play GTA3, but it's exciting that it's coming to the iPhone -- I love to see big games likes this get ported. Hope it's a nice port.

I think they've already realized that. They're probably working on a strategy for apps for the Apple TV / Apple Television (heh ;) and getting the SDK ready. Maybe we'll see it along with the next gen (A5 seems like a minimum here for its much better GPU) based Apple TV.

Instant purchase for me and wow only $4.99 .

They still want $9.99 for Chinatown Wars .

I guess since its a port of sorts and an old game maybe they did not feel right about gouging people for $10 though i would have happily paid it to play it on my 4s .

I've never played GTA at all... at this price, I'll be seriously considering the possibility of having GTA 3 on my new iPhone 4S be my first time...

Optimized means it was written to take advantage of the iphone's hardware.

I think it has been stated that it is based on (port?) the Xbox enhanced version of GT3 but they do take advantage of the dual core and graphics of the new phone and ipad.
