I get dibs on being the first guy with a new 14" iBook with Superdrive! :)
hehe
in all seriousness, this is a GREAT machine. i finally made the switch today with this, and i must say i am very impressed by it. i am so glad i got this. my folks were with me when i got it, and they were wowed by, as my mom said, the "whiteness and cleansiness" of the 'book.
Just wanted to also say thanks to everyone for all their opinions and info regarding the books that helped me in my purchasing decision. MR is one of the best communities I've ever posted on.

Is there an empty RAM slot available or did apple fill 512MB of RAM by giving us 2x256MB sticks?
MUCKYFINGERS
Jul 28, 2005, 01:49 AM
I'm pretty sure it's one 512 MB stick and the other slot is free... Hence the reason you can grab 1.5 gb after getting a 1gb stick I believe.

My girlfriend flew to Honolulu today (we live on the big island) for a conference tomorrow and friday and it didn't take her long to get to the ala moano shopping center, the location of the only apple store.... so far from any continental land mass.... and she spoke with an employee that said.....

Download some game demos from Macgamefiles and do some benchmarks for us eh? Gotta see how the 9550 performs with 32MB RAM. Probably worse than my over two year old Radeon 9500 with 128MB, but not by a significant amount. It uses an RV350 core:
"First, let us establish that ATI itself does not really have a Mobility RADEON 9550 product. What the Mobility RADEON 9550 really is, is a Mobility RADEON 9600 GPU; the same one as you find in the desktop RADEON 9600, as they share the same M10 RV350 core. It is the first mobile platform GPU from ATI to support DirectX 9. Created using the 0.13 micron process, it has 4 pixel pipelines and 2 vertex pipelines, and runs at the same 350MHz core frequency of the RADEON 9600, thus becoming the first mobile platform GPU to break the 300MHz barrier."

I have to make the decision between a 12 and a 14" iBook. Can I ask why you chose 14"?

I have to make the decision between a 12 and a 14" iBook. Can I ask why you chose 14"?
I chose the 14" simply because it's more comfortable for me to view the screen. Most people prefer the 12" and argue that since it has the same resolution it's pointless having the 14", but I feel so much better using this 14" and even though the viewable area is the same, it is much more comfortable on the eyes and the extra screen space is nice for watching videos/movies. :)
But to each his own. Try both out and see which one you like more.

(had the cash in my pocket) but i got a little scared that i was gona be disappointed with it. i jus cant get over the 15" PB. after sitting in front of the 14" for over an hour i just couldnt get over how dim the display was. i think im gona end up with a 15" pb 1.5ghz combo. then later on ill get a really nice ext dvd burner.

i am still thinking about if i should buy a 12" ibook. and i know that it is a lowend notebook. but i am not sure if it is too slow for my needs. a friend told me that even on his 15" powerbook (1.25 ghz) he is seeing tiger's beachball far too often.
dear owners: would you please post some benchmarks to compare it with other notebooks. what about some xbench results?
there are some old ones comparing october's 14" ibook and 12" pb:

I'm using the 14" iBook right now, and I must say that the screen to me feels brighter than the 12" ibook (b4 this last update) and 12" powerbooks that I've used in the past. It doesn't feel dark at all, it's very comfortable to read. Although it may have felt uncomfortable when I used it in not-so greatly lit/too brightly lit stores. But the brightness is fine. Though if someone tries out the 12" we can see if it's true for that one as well.

Yes, they do. I have noticed that unlike my Mac mini with 10.4.2, when you download a widget it automatically brings it up in a little preview window in dashboard and asks if you want to install it or not! Amazing!! :D
PS: I couldn't get the one of the actual dashboard for you. I just got this one. There is another little confirmation window in the dashboard that displays the widget and ask you if you would like to keep or delete. ENJOY!!

This was posted on the other new iBook thread by macrumors1234 discussing his new 1.33ghz 12" ibook:
"But for those who are worried about the screen, I can definitely say that it is significantly brighter than the one on my iBook 1.2. Not that I had a big problem with the old screen, but I know that some have complained wrt the brightness of the old one. To put it another way, it's not longer as blindly obvious (in terms of brightness) when I switch between my new iBook's screen and my Hitachi 17" desktop LCD monitor. Hope that helps."
Needless to say, thats some very good news

so the screens are indeed brighter than the older ibooks??? thats great news to me, when i went to go buy one yesterday the guy at the store told me everything was identical as far as looks. they only had the old ones on display so i was mainly disappointed in the brightness of the screen. can anyone else confirm this?? maybe if someone has both an old model and a brand new one you would be so kind as to take a pic with the 2 ibooks side by side??? thanks

Well, here is a snapshot of the Ripple effect in action on my new iBook. It doesn't look good using screen capture, but it looks cool when you actually see it (nothing that special though IMO -- it just looks like how water in a swimming pool would behave if you dropped a small rock into it).

I got suckered into buying a 12" at the Plano TX Apple Store today (my parents uncharacteristically agreed to pick up half as an early birthday - after selling the Mini (or my old 20GB) my cost is only $425ish).
The screen is definitely an improvement over the display model I looked at in the Dallas store, I'm going to calibrate the battery and swing by Fry's to pick up a 1GB stick this evening.
Oh, what a wild way to spend my Saturday.

For all those who do self-upgrades of RAM, doesn't the lack of AppleCare scare you?...
milozauckerman
Jul 30, 2005, 06:39 PM
I'm not sure what you mean - by my understanding aftermarket RAM doesn't void the entire computer's warranty. The RAM isn't covered, of course (but would be the reseller or manufacturer), and if it managed to blow up anything on its own that wouldn't be covered by the warranty (more applicable if I tried to hack a 7200RPM drive in and melted something), but RAM itself shouldn't void everything.
Besides, if I had problems I'd remove the RAM to test/isolate the problem and leave it out when I took it in to the Genius Bar.

Am writing this post on my new 12" iBook right now!
The ripple effect is *confirmed*.
The ripple is a little moody at first, while installing all the software updates (and I assume spotlight is indexing in the background as well).
It became a little more reliable after a reboot, however.
Picked it up at an Apple Store in Colorado. Eventually gave up on Apple Credit and just used my credit card. :p
I'll post some XBench stats a little later.

I hope the new iBook (1,33GHz) are as quiet as my old (G4/800MHz) - do you hear any noise at all (except the harddrive seeking/writing every once in a while)?
D.
I have played games and DVD and suck on my new iBook, sitting it on a pillow, and have STILL NEVER heard or felt the fan come on at all! And it was sitting on a pillow!! I am amazed at this beautiful machine!

Thats good to hear, I noticed with my friends G3 iBook that it got hot on a pillow while just watching a DVD.

I just ran xbench on my brand new 12" ibook. I'm on battery power still stilling in the store on Apple's wireless connection. I've only rebooted once since I got it, so it may be indexing or running maintenance in the background still.

Is there an empty RAM slot available or did apple fill 512MB of RAM by giving us 2x256MB sticks?
Think about how you could answer this question yourself.... why dont you go to the apple store online and look at the maximum ammount of memory you can put in the ibook if it says 1.256 than that means they use two 256 sticks if it says it's upgradeable to 1.512 that means they use a single 512 stick...

I think im going to pick up the new ibook 12".
i sold my 1st gen ibook g4 (800mhz) a month ago for $1050 canadian, so picking one of the new ones up for 1379 with a free ipod mini is a pretty sweet deal if you ask me.
What is the Canadian-American currency conversion rate... in other words how much is 1050 Canadian worth?

i ordered my new 14" at the North Point mall location in Georgia (got the tax free deal + the new ipod mini for free)... i had to order cuz i didn't want a superdrive (i already have an external one)...
i had to call apple though because online it said i had cancelled my ipod mini order... they said they had to cancel it and reorder it so i could get the tax free deal... has this happened with anyone else? jw... hope everything goes okay i can't wait to get it
anyone else selling the free ipod mini so the ibook will be "cheaper"???

and a 1.33 Ghz 12" powerbook

the results should be much better.

I also ordered my iBook during the tax free weekend here in Atlanta, and I had the same problem with my mini order being cancelled. I called them up and found out it hadn't been cancelled -- they had just created a new order number for the mini, a separate one, since the mini didn't qualify for the tax free deal. But all was good, don't worry. I got my mini in the mail just this morning! :) The iBook is still in manufacturing, though!

I just ordered my new 12" iBook (stock configuration) and got the free iPod Mini with it! :D
I'm finally back to Apple. This is my first Mac in years (Second Mac in general). My first Mac was a Macintosh LCIII with 80 MB hard drive and 4 MB of RAM! My dad got it when I was in grade 3, now I'm a second year Computer Engineering Student.

I hope so too, because that's an awful score.
I got a similar score on my new iBook.. I think it's because of this:
http://www.xbench.com/
1.2 [2005-07-30]
* Built as a Universal Binary to run on both PowerPC and x86 Macs
* Re-calibrated 100 point baseline to a 2.0 GHz G5 running Tiger
* Altered graphics code to flush only every 1/60th of a second, in order to cooperate with Tiger beam syncing
* Built Intel code on GCC 4.0, PowerPC remains on GCC 3.3 for 10.3 compatibility
So looks like the new xBench has been changed so a score of 100= 2GHz G5. No wonder my little 1.33GHz G4 doesn't measure up. ;)

Even so I wrote the guys an email I am not sure what is better. Cable and 4 buttons or bluetooth and 1 button. Arrrrggghhhhhhh   :( :(
Maybe you guys have some thoughts.
And: I would really appreciate any Xbench scores or pics.

Isn't there an old version floating around? If someone has it - maybe can send the new iBook owners by mail.
Thanks and Cheers

Okay, here's a real comparison. Dug up a copy of xBench 1.1.3 (which is same used in the benchmarks listed above for old iBook/pBooks)
Here's the scoop! (was on battery power, but set Energy to maxPerformance with no apps actively running. Didn't bother to squish individual processes.) Looks like it comes in faster than the old iBook, but below the old 1.3GHz pBook.

My iBook came this morning at about 9:30AM EST, shipped on the 28th, and got it a day ahead of schedule. (Supposed to be August 3rd, 10:30AM) I'm loving it, I like the thinner keys as well.

Okay, I know that this thread has been dormant for nearly a month, but I just got my ibook yesterday (waited till MA tax free day, then had to wait for 80g HD and was out of town when it finally arrived) and I had to share my joy. I am so happy with this machine! Granted, it's the first computer I've owned that can get on the internet. My last machine, which died in 2001 was a Sharp 486DX. I bought it refurb when pentiums came out for nearly as much as my new ibook. How times have changed. Since then, I've been limited to friends' and famiy's machines, as well as libraries and school, so perhaps my excitement has to do with my new found freedom, but I'm also loving tiger. Everything is right where I need it, and easy to figure out.
Thanks to everyone in the "New ibook next Tuesday?" thread for all the info and support over those long months. I learned an awful lot from you. In a way I'm glad that it took so long, because when it finally came time to buy, I was very well educated about my needs and knew just what to get. Also, though a lot of you were knocking this update, the two finger scrolling alone was worth the wait- I can't imagine having to scroll the old fashioned way.
So once again, thanks for being such a great community. I'm glad I can finally be a mac-owning member of it.

I really enjoy my mighty mouse that I got for my iBook. It's great for when it's sitting on the desk as I like the options of the second button without hitting an extra key on the keyboard.

I got mine the other day. Works fine, but it has a small white blotch just slightly off from the center of the screen. I'm more concerned with the DVD drive, which makes a KERCHUNKKERCHUNKKERCHUK noise for 2-3 minutes after inserting a movie, hanging the system in the meantime. It also hung up again halfway through the movie I tested it with (The Matrix). I'm guessing that's not normal?
