Hey there guys,
Just picked up a new top of the range powerbook about a week ago and wanted to share my experience for any who might be considering one. First off, this thing is a steal with the education discount. I paid $2500 for the system in my sig...retail it would be approching $3000, if not more.
In any case, very refined system. I went to best buy yesterday to compare my Apple with the PC offerings...there is NO contest. Sure, some of them may be marginally quicker, but the fit and finish is HORRIBLE. They seriously look like absolute junk next to a powerbook.
Also, the little features incorperated into the PBook make all the difference. The scrolling trackpad is the bomb, as is the display and keyboard that adjust based upon ambient lighting.
The screen is impressive...the resolution is very nice, despite some PC laptops having a better rating. Just to note, however, that alienware, a company that I regard as among the best in the PC world, still equip their top of the range books with 1440x900...and these are gaming notebooks.
Generally, the aesthetics of the Apple are top notch. Very pleasing to work with this notebook. Also, for its size this thing packs some power. I am amazed at how thin and [relativly] light this PBook is...very impressive indeed. I challenge someone to dig up a PC notebook that is as powerful as this, in a similarly thin package. All the PC books I have seen are at least one and a half times thicker than this...I dont think you can make a notebook any thinner!
Some have argued here that the Sony Vaio notebooks are aesthetically as nice as the PBooks. I would have to strongly disagree. The sonys I saw looked like *****...nothing impressive there at all.
In the end, I am very happy with my purchase. I was reluctant to pick one up this close to an update, but Im not sorry now that Ive been using this one for a few days. If an update came tomorrow Id still be happy with what Ive got here...very happy. Plus, what are they going to offer, a 1.7GHZ 7448, at absolute best? C'mon...
Perhaps the only real complaint I have is the trackpad. Although its great, very often my free hand tends to rest on the corner of the pad. Ill be trying to move the pointer, then realize my free hand is confusing the computer. Im sure Ill habituate myself against this sooner or later.
I find it dissapointing that all the armchair experts here on Macrumors consistently blow off the Powerbook. Im confident that the current PBook can do everying (and more) that 98% of the Macrumors whiners require. Some have been so bold to say the PBook is an arcane piece of *****, which I think is very off base. These books are top notch, the best on the market in my opinion.
Well, that about sums up my powerbook perspective. Anyone else that has a PBook feel free to add your pros and cons...
