View Full Version : So did 10.8.2 improve battery life?

I hope so, because I only get 3-4 hours web browsing on low brightness.

It came out half an hour ago, jesus. Give it some time. As for now though, it definitely feels faster in terms of performance.

Does Safari feel snappier I hear you ask? See for yourself ;)

I have about 30-45 more minutes showing right now than I've ever seen before.

So yes, at least initially.

You only get 3-4 hours from light browsing on low brightness?

I get ~6 hours on 9 bars of brightness watching ~45 minutes of video + web browsing + music playing.

I haven't tested this new update yet. Downloading now :D, I'll post results once it's done.

I'm also updating iPhoto. 1.14GB. Seriously. WTF?

Do you have a Macbook Air?

I traded screen size and battery life for portability. Still totally okay with it.

The new update gave me exactly 7 hours of actual usage.

It's estimating 4:40 from a full charge which is underwhelming but I'm sure it will re-evaluate and give me a better number soon-ish :I

edit: says 8:10 now. yuppie! 6 bars of brightness.

He probably has a 13 inch Air. I also get that regularly (if not more), but I don't use the screen as brightly as he does. Your 11 inch Air is expected to get shorter battery life than the 13 inch.

I can't tell if 10.8.2 improved my battery life yet because it broke my battery meter :( It was showing 100% for 10 minutes and I thought "wow, this is much better" then I checked Battery Health app and saw that it was actually around 96%. Now the battery meter is reading 88% and it is actually 83%. The actual life seems similar. It isn't terrible, I'm showing about 5:30 right now for web browsing at about 50% screen brightness.

Maybe a dumb question, but what "should" the battery life be for the 2012 Air 11"? Also, what has the battery life been for previous generations?

Currently doing light use with screen at 50% on my 2012 13" MBA (word processing, online questions bank for an exam I'm studying for); 1.5h in with the screen never going dark, I'm at 79%. I think it's an improvement from before.

Working at night with screen/keyboard at lowest brightness with bluetooth off but wifi on and a few programs open (safari, excel word). Just unplugged and have been using my MBA 2012 for a bit and the battery saying about 8 hours remaining :D. In a few weeks I should get a better estimate of the real life, but the Air has never read that high before for me!

Hmmm, no noticeable difference I'm afraid on my 13" 2012 MBA.
It certainly hasn't reduced it, I would say it's increased it, but running the battery down took about 10 minutes longer I'd say so not a considerable amount

How many hours does your car drive on a full tank? Same question. Depends on what you are doing. Put screen on full brightness, attach an external DVD drive and compress movies with Handbrake, and at the same time charge your iPad, and the battery empties quickly. Less brightness and browsing MacRumors and the battery lasts a lot longer.

I don't know about the battery life yet, haven't tested that enough, but the new update is deffiently a big improvement. Switching between desktops doesn't lag anymore (which occured to me since 10.8). Also turboboost works now under Windows with the 2012 i7. Very happy about that.

I'm using a 2011 13" i7 MacBook Air.

To help make some sense of the battery live I made this spreadsheet.
If you go and put your information in there then I can graph it all out and we can see some patterns.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AifYC4XgbUbrdE9iU3NQdnFCRlUxaFZrbGgyNDRrbUE&pli=1

just add your laptop to the chart, i tried to make it easy and painless while still being useful.

I have seen an improvement in battery life. ML reports ~8hrs after full charge where it only reported ~5.5hrs before.

I surfed for several hours on the battery alone last night and after 3 hours I still had ~75% of the battery life left.

Now mind you, these are only estimations.

Never really had problems. During university lectures, WIFI off, brightness 6-7 bars, with word and sometimes a PDF-file opened, my 2012 MBA uses like 12-14% per 2 hours. Indicated battery time up to 11.00hrs.

For me 10.8.2 gives me just as much battery as I got with 10.7.x that my Air came with.

Using Click-to-flash and ad-block
Brightness @ just under 1/2 and keyboard light on it's lightest setting with Mail, Safari, Adium and a few tabs open I get about 5hrs.

My daily work flow on my 15"'MBP is very consistent day after day. So comparing battery is quite easy. Being near an outlet means I've never been that concerned.

However I do use it away from the desk several times per month so I thought I'd track it before the update. Now I understand what others are talking about. There's certainly less run time. After the latest update I'm not noticing a difference. I use super timer to track usage for work. Therefore if there was a difference it'd be easy for me to identify it.

I'm sure as more reports come in, Apple will take another try at fixing it.

I don't think it's possible to charge while on the road.

That said, I was on battery.

30 minutes may not be a lot compared to 1h 30m, but when you're gaming, this is a huge number.

Use to have 6-7 hours on my air before 10.8.2 but now i only get ~5 hours with a full charge.. The brightness is around 30% too so it's not where it was before.. I want at least 6-7 hours on low brightness but i guess 5 is better than 4 or less.

Based on the computer's reading at full charge, on 10.8.1 I get 4.55hrs, brightness at 50%. Now with 10.8.2 I get a reading of 5.5hrs. New 2011 11" Air with only 23 cycles.

Does the mid-2012 air have better battery life? I don't get any of these stats this article shows here. I use to be around 6-7 hours when i got this with Lion but now ever since the new update to Mountain Lion and the 10.8.2 it's running around 5.5 hours max and that's with very low brightness, about 10%. Is this only me because i hear some other people getting better battery life.

http://osxdaily.com/2012/06/26/battery-life-on-macbook-air-2012-is-better-than-advertised/

Right now i'm sitting at 4 hours with 70% left and backlit off, 10% brightness on screen. That other 30% seems to disappear within 1 hour which i find a bit off.

EDIT: Anyone else use full screen on Safari? I like to use it because it's easier to switch but it seem to be hogging a lot of the battery.

I think that the people who are not getting battery life improvements after doing a clean install of 10.8.2 either have a faulty battery or faulty hardware. I mean how is it possible that the rest of us are getting good battery life when we are doing the same method of 10.8.2 installation? Can't be software issue.....

The battery indicator in 10.8.2 is completely wrong. It reports around 4:52 from full charge but ends up lasting 7-8 hours. Usually gets stuck at 4:52 for around 1-1.5 hours.
