1000 songs in your pocket changed everything. Here we go again.
Apple's Media event kicks off at 10am Pacific, 1pm Eastern. Live coverage appears to be provided at:

MacWorld.com (http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/09/07/special/index.php)
iLounge.com (http://www.ilounge.com)
Engadget (http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000030057785/)

Motorola and Apple Launch ROKR iTunes Phone (http://www.mobiledia.com/news/35870.html).
Motorola and Apple today announced the availability of the world's first mobile phone with iTunes, enabling music lovers to transfer up to 100 of their favorite songs from the iTunes jukebox on their Mac or PC to their mobile phone.

The new Motorola ROKR (pronounced "Rocker") is available in the following markets:
- U.S. - today, exclusively with Cingular
- U.K. - expected to be available first with Carphone Warehouse in mid-September and with O2, Orange, Virgin Mobile, BT Mobile and other top retailers by late September

The Motorola ROKR features a color display for viewing album art, dual built-in stereo speakers and stereo headphones that also serve as a mobile headset with microphone. Music fans can randomly autofill or manually fill the mobile phone with playlists of their favorite music, audiobooks and Podcasts from their iTunes library via a USB connection. The Motorola ROKR pauses music automatically when users take a call and offers the ability to listen to music while checking messages or snapping a photo

Updates:

- iTunes 5 announced. Same display, but cleaned up. Search bar. Smart Shuffle feature. Can now organize playlists into folders. Available today from Apple's website. Windows users can sync contact and calendar info with Outlook and Outlook express. Parental controls to restrict songs with explicit lyrics. Album reviews.
- Photo from stage of the new phone: Phone Photo (http://flickr.com/photos/ipodlounger/41192845/in/photostream/)
- Motorola Rokr can only hold about 100 songs. "The way we think of this phone is, it's really an iPod shuffle on your phone" - Jobs.
- Cingular has updated (http://www.cingular.com/) their website with photos and information on the new iTunes Phone. $249.99 with a 2year contract.
- iPod nano - Replacing the iPod mini with the iPod nano: "an entirely new ground-up design, that also has 1000 songs in your pocket." The white device features a color display and can support photos, uses a grey click wheel to navigate, and is 80 percent smaller in volume than the original iPod -- thinner than a number two pencil, said Jobs. The iPod nano weighs 1.5 ounces or 42 grams". Photo (http://flickr.com/photos/ipodlounger/41197718/).

Well considering that this is a big event. I'd like to see live coverage from Apple. Anyway, it looks like the sites which are providing coverage are already overloaded so I won't be trying to stay up to the minute, I'll just wait 6 hours for all the hype to die away and just go to apple.com later. Bye.

All I know is that I'm buying a new iPod when they update the iPod line (not the mini, not the shuffle).
As for the supposed upcoming phone, if that's what is released, I'll reserve judgement until I can see one up close.

Has anyone mentioned or considered that these phones may connect to iTunes over the internet and access the entire library from the phone? The flash memory would just be needed to buffer playlists. The RAZR is a 3G phone, and if the networks want to promote their new EV-DO and EDGE networks they might be willing to carry the phone. Actually, only one would need to, they would hope for Apple fanboys to hop over to their voice and data services. All it would take is a update to iTunes, some router port forwarding (maybe), and smart integration of the IP stack, audio decoder, and headset/speaker circuits inside the phone. Sign me up.

Jobs told the crowd that Apple has sold more than half a billion songs through its iTunes Music Store to date. "We are selling songs at a rate of 1.8 million songs per day," he explained. "iTunes has an 82 percent market share here in the US."

Jobs reiterated an Apple press release offered earlier today that it has 80 percent of the legitimate online music download market in the UK, and said that iTunes is doing "extremely well around the world." There are iTunes Music Stores in 20 countries, he said, representing 85 percent of the global music market.

I sure as heck hope this is more than another cheap consumer device.

Cell phones already account for so many vehicle accidents, I'm afraid to even imagine what will happen when people are fooling around with an iTunes phone. Not to mention the safety risks involved if they have both ears plugged with ear buds.

I'm sure people will love these things, but I don't think it's a very good idea.

iPod nano

After summarizing the existing iPod product line, Jobs explained that the iPod mini is what all of Apple's competitors are aiming for. Apple is "going to do something pretty bold," he said. Apple is "replacing it with something new."

Jobs calls the iPod nano "an entirely new ground-up design, that also has 1000 songs in your pocket." The white device features a color display and can support photos, grey click wheel, and is 80 percent smaller in volume than the original iPod -- thinner than a number two pencil, said Jobs.

Compared to the iPod mini, the iPod nano is half the thickness and 62 percent smaller by volume. It uses a 30-pin dock connector, so the iPod nano plugs in to existing iPod accessories.

The iPod

Following the introduction of the Motorola ROKR, Jobs offered attendees a status update on the iPod. Apple has 74 percent market share for all MP3 players as of July, he said. AT the end of their last quarter, Apple had sold almost 22 million iPods, with 6.2 million sold in the June quarter alone.

"Let me compare it to another successful product, the Sony PSP," said Jobs, referring to Sony's handheld gaming system that can also play music. Last quarter the iPod sold 6 million, while the Sony PSP sold 2 million units."

Four new automotive brands announced iPod connectivity today, according to Jobs: Honda, Honda's upscale Acura brand, as well as European car makers Audi and Volkswagen.

In 2006, 30 percent of all cars sold in the U.S. are going to offer iPod connectivity as an option, said Jobs.

Apple Introduces iPod nano

PR Newswire 1:48 pm September 7, 2005

Apple(R) today introduced the iPod(R) nano, a revolutionary full-featured iPod that holds 1,000 songs yet is thinner than a standard #2 pencil and less than half the size of competitive players. The iPod nano features an ultra-portable, lightweight design with a gorgeous color screen, Apple's patent pending Click Wheel and the ability to hold 1,000 songs or 25,000 photos. iPod nano works seamlessly with the iTunes(R) Music Store, the world's number one digital music service. The iPod nano is available immediately in a 4GB model priced at just $249 and a 2GB model priced at just $199, with both models available in stunning white or black designs.

"iPod nano is the biggest revolution since the original iPod," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "iPod nano is a full-featured iPod in an impossibly small size, and it's going to change the rules for the entire portable music market."

iPod nano is the perfect combination of innovative design, storage capacity and ease of use. Thinner than a standard #2 pencil and weighing only 1.5 ounces, iPod nano comes in two models -- the 4GB iPod nano holds up to 1,000 songs and the 2GB iPod nano holds up to 500 songs. iPod nano features Apple's innovative Click Wheel for precise, one-handed navigation, and its ultra-portable design fits into even the smallest pocket making it easy to take iPod nano to the gym, in the car, traveling, commuting or anywhere you go.

The most fashionable and wearable iPod ever, the iPod nano features optional accessories including lanyard headphones, which integrate the headphone cables into the lanyard, so users can wear their iPod nano around their neck without dangling headphone cables. For customers looking to personalize their iPod nano with colors, an optional set of iPod nano Tubes in pink, purple, blue, green and clear offers fashionable protection in a sheer casing while enabling full operation of all functions including the Click Wheel. Optional armbands available in gray, pink, blue, red and green allow users to wear their iPod nano as the ultimate fashion and sports accessory.

iPod nano features the same 30-pin dock connector as the iPod and iPod mini, allowing it to work effortlessly with a wide range of over 1,000 accessories developed for iPod, including home stereo speakers and iPod car adapters for an incredible music experience at home or in the car.

Featuring seamless integration with the iTunes Music Store and the iTunes digital music jukebox, iPod nano includes Apple's patent pending Auto-Sync technology that automatically downloads a user's digital music collection, photos or Podcasts onto iPod nano and keeps it up-to-date whenever iPod nano is plugged into a Mac(R) or Windows computer using USB 2.0. With its stunning, high-resolution color screen, iPod nano allows users to display album art while playing music, view photo slideshows or play games in full color. iPod nano features up to 14 hours battery life* and completely skip-free playback, as well as new stopwatch, world clock and screen lock applications.

Pricing & Availability

The 4GB and 2GB white and black models of iPod nano for Mac or Windows are available worldwide immediately for a suggested retail price of $249 (US) and $199 (US) respectively, through the Apple Store(R) (www.apple.com), Apple's retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers. All iPod nano models include earbud headphones, a USB 2.0 cable and a CD with iTunes for Mac and Windows computers.

New optional accessories designed for iPod nano with the following suggested retail prices include: Lanyard headphones for $39 (US), armbands in five colors each for $29 (US), dock for $29 (US) and a set of iPod nano Tubes in five different colors for $29 (US) and will be available within the next 30 days.

iPod nano requires a Mac with a USB 2.0 port and Mac OS(R) X version 10.3.4 or later and iTunes 4.9 (or later); or a Windows PC with a USB 2.0 port and Windows 2000, XP Home or Professional (SP2) and iTunes 4.9 (or later).

"White is our signature color for the iPod ... but we decided to so a second color, and we tried it because it looked so cool," said Jobs, "so we're doing a black model as well."

The iPod nano ships today in 2GB and 4GB confiugurations for US$199 and $249 respectively. Apple is also offering customized iPod nano accessories including a $29 dock, $39 lanyard with built-in headphones, color-coordinated armbands for $29 each, and "nanotubes" -- green, purple, blue and pink slipcases, sold in boxes of five, for $29 each.

I thought the mini was already the perfect size... of course the fatter I get the less room I have in my pockets.

Just too bad about the capacities. Just doesn't make much sense to upgrade when my 4GB mini is already maxed and now I'd want to put photos on something like this. They should've at least had a 6GB model for $249 and bumped the 4GB to $229. I suppose the cost of flash might prohibit that.

I wonder if we'll see an update to the minis at MacExpo??

We his comments sacrilegious? Can an Apple user not dislike aspects of apple or their products. Does every disapproval have to be met with such contempt?

I am sure that the individual comment doesn't matter too much to apple, but any individual that dislikes the product is representative of a larget market. so yes apple does care.

Did anyone notice that the iPod mini seems to be missing? That would suck if it was replaced by the Nano since that'll mean no 8-10GB small formfactor iPods!!!

so will the nano replace the mini? or be offered in addition to it?

I think they should keep the mini, maybe bump it up to 8 or 10GB and then add in the nano...
You can't get the Mini now from the Apple store, so it's a replacement.

The oddest part is, judging from the gallery, the Nano's headphone socket is on the BOTTOM. Weird, huh?

I wonder why they say you have to connect a USB cable to the phone in order to sync your music while the phone supports bluetooth. On top of that, I wonder why Apple didn't update iSync today to support this phone.

I think it is cool, but I am sad to see the iPod mini is gone :( The battery life and 6GB of storage in a small package was nice. Not that it really matters to me since I own a 20GB iPod 4G (or is it 5G now??)with color screen. Cool product non-the-less.

Yeah, I wish there was a 8 GB model for say $299. But they may be supply-limited on the memory.

One the whole though, I think it is a very worthwile update. While my 40GB 4G was being replaced under warranty, I used my wife's Shuffle a lot. It's not just the size, but the weight that is great about flash players. I really got used to hanging it around my neck, preferable for me than keeping the player in my pocket.

Now that I checked, the nano doesn't come with a lanyard.

Oh joy. Another boring iPod design that is the same as the design 4 years ago. *looks under the carpet* I know there is innovation here somewhere. I just can't find it.
Yah for iTunes 5.

Boo for the 100 song iTunes phone and the craptastic Nano. Wouldn't it be nice if Apple would one day actually revamp their design? 30 years from now.....

"Introducing the iPod subatomic. Same great design as the last 40 iterations of the iPod but who cares because we are trendy.Ē
I don't foresee the iPod ever getting a facelift while its on top of the dog pile.

This "event" was just the side of a complete letdown. Can't wait to get home and play with iTunes 5 and see if there are enough features to warrant a version number jump.

The Nano looks wonderfull. For a size like that, i dont mind the slight drop in specs, its to be expected.

im getting one. There is no stopping me. Finally i can go on a hike with a decent amount of songs, safely.

What a rush this buy will be.

Every piece of hardware from Apple that came in colors (well, the iMac G3 and the iPod mini) was a huge succes. Still they went back to all black and white. I really liked the colored minis (esp. the green one).

Btw. I like the name "Nanotubes" :)

Well, I have to say, I LOVE the nano. I went from a shuffle to a mini recently, and the only thing I missed about the shuffle was the excellent size and low weight. I loved having the mini with a screen and click wheel. Having the color screen will be a nice bonus as well, but wouldn't have been a deal breaker, for me.

Now I can have the best of both. Anyone wanna buy a 4GB 1G mini? ;-)

Although, as pointed out, I think that replacing the mini was a mistake. Dropping back to 4gb as the max for non fullsized iPod and losing a few hours of battery life could be a bad move in a lot of peoples eyes. For me 12 hours of usable life (they are saving 14 and they've been underestimating battery life on iPods lately... maybe 16-18 is realistic?) is plenty, and 4gb, while I COULD USE more, gets the job done without having to sacrifice anything. For example, right now I have about 5 audio books on my 4gb mini, plus maybe 800 songs... don't really need more than that without taking my entire library with me.

I wanted a green mini too... I wish they could have kept the mini form factor and just slim it down... the iPod form factor get scratched too easily and the nano tubes are transparent [right? it's made of silicon like those old iPod skins]-> the black will shows through... it is pretty nonetheless though :D such slimness...

I was thinking about that - I thought people might be apprehensive about putting him in front of an audience after his katrina comments...

But back on topic, I like it...though not enough to run right out and get one. I'm still wating for an 80 or 100 GB ipod. but apparently 2-4 GB is the sweet spot...

Noticed in the store description of the nano tubes, they at one point were being called drifter tubes.

I guess at some point they were going with the iPod Drifter.

Thank god they went with nano.

See screenshot.

Weird, the US store has it correct, only UK store calls them drifter tubes.

I know it is early, but I'm wondering if we can sync our data with the ROKR E1. It has not been updated on the devices (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/isync/devices.html) page and there is no mention of it anywhere...

I would consider one as long as I could sync my contacts.

silicon......theres a saying "if its not broken dont fix it" do you know what that means?

Who defines if itís broke? Apple? A design can always get better. I donít care how simple and refined it is. The iPodís design was cool and fresh 3 years ago. How about they do something new and exciting. Even the car industry once every few years revamps a design from the ground up. This is what happens when there really is no competition. The only thing pushing Apple on at this point is the attempt to get people to upgrade. I believe that Apple simply doesn't want to dick with a selling design even if they could somehow make it better. How could they make it better? No clue but that is Apple's job not mine.

Its interesting to watch everyone pat Apple on the back for the Nano. What have they really done? Moved to a flash based design, shrunk the size. That isnít innovative that is, pardon the pun, reinventing the wheel.

So did they increase the resolution of the display (compared to the mini)? The new one has got 176 x 132 pixels, but I can't find the mini's resolution right now.

I like the nano a lot. If I didnt have an iPod, I'd seriously consider a black one. As for the ROKR, I think that 100 songs is a good amount... there's probably 512MB built-in flash on the phone, with a good bit of it being used for the phone systems, etc. It would, however, be nice to see an expansion slot so that all the complainers would have more space.

I for one like the current iPod's color scheme a lot--I only wished you could get it in black without the red wheel! The Nano couldn't look better, to my tastes. Pure technolust.

Changing the look of something JUST to change it isn't always good. And Apple's design, being minimalist, has longevity. Not to mention that as a business decision, messing with the recognized look would be a bad idea.

Besides, people can customize the look with cases all they want.

But everyone has different tastes, so of course some people don't like the look, and that's fine.

Anyway...

FYI, here's a rundown of iPod screen specs:

iPod 2" color (220x176 in 1.56x1.25"):
141 DPI
.039 megapixels

iPod Nano 1.5" (176x132 in 1.2x.9"):
147 DPI
.023 megapixels

iPod 2" monochrome (160x128 in 1.56x1.25"):
102 DPI
.02 megapixels

iPod Mini 1.67" (138x110 in 1.31x1.04"):
106 DPI
.015 megapixels

iPod Shuffle 0" (0x0 in 0.0x0.0")
0 DPI
0 megapixels

(Note that the Nano has a higher res screen than the mono iPods, but less than the current full-size color models. The Nano is considerably higher res than the Mini was--not to mention the high-contrast OS X-style anti-aliased UI!)
